  • FVC Valley wide open, but don’t count out Cary-Grove Aug 26, 2013 8:21 PM
It’s probably not a good idea to sell the Cary-Grove football team short. Despite graduating a large portion of last year’s team that reached the Class 6A state title game, third-year coach Brad Seaburg is far from waving a white flag for the defending Fox Valley Conference Valley Division champions. “We have the athleticism and we’re starting to see some leadership emerging,” he said of his junior-heavy lineup. “On paper and after seeing what we’ve seen in practice with our enthusiasm, effort and execution so far, we feel like we should be able to compete for a conference championship, for sure.”

  • Warren channels its energy into convincing victory May 28, 2013 9:25 PM
Three Warren hitters into Tuesday’s Class 4A sectional semifinal game in Crystal Lake, the Blue Devils already had a pair of homers and an infield single. Evidently nerves about playing in the Prairie Ridge sectional didn’t matter to Warren, because the Blue Devils batted around in the first inning. It paid off with 5 quick runs. Warren (26-5) will play for a sectional crown this weekend after an impressive 8-2 win over McHenry on Tuesday.

  • Tough exit for Trumpis, Grant May 22, 2013 10:56 PM
Not even a bitter defeat could sour the sweet feelings Grant senior Jake Trumpis has for McHenry's Petersen Park. Trumpis certainly pitched well enough to win Wednesday night's Class 4A baseball regional semifinal duel with McHenry's Andrew Reisinger before a big crowd. The right-hander allowed only 4 singles and had 6 strikeouts and no walks as he threw just 73 pitches in 6 innings. But three perfectly placed singles in the top of the fourth inning and some stellar defense by No. 4 McHenry (23-14) sent Trumpis and top-seeded Grant (17-12) to a tough 1-0 defeat.

  • Huntley, McHenry graciously share county crown Apr 20, 2013 11:15 PM
Huntley and McHenry were well suited to split the 2013 McHenry County Boys Track and Field Meet title in Cary Saturday. “It’s great that we tied,” Huntley relay anchor Mike Dollar said. “We both competed really hard. I have a lot of buddies on McHenry and I have since middle school.” Once the meet concluded athletes from both programs posed together with the trophy. Even the chummy coaches seemed satisfied with the split decision of a meet delayed two days by bad weather, though both expressed some surprise at the outcome.

  • Cary-Grove girls make it 5 straight county titles Apr 20, 2013 10:21 PM
Cary-Grove’s drive for five didn’t come easy. The Trojans edged Huntley by 7 points to win their fifth consecutive McHenry County Girls Track and Field Meet on a crisp Saturday in Cary, and they did so by navigating potholes. Sophomore Morgan Schulz tweaked an ankle in warm-ups and had to pull out of the 800-meter relay, which finished second only to Huntley. The Trojans relinquished points in the day’s second race when the 400-meter relay team dropped the baton and finished sixth.

  • Huntley starts fast then hangs on Feb 1, 2013 10:56 PM
All of the early signs pointed to a nice and relaxing Friday night for Huntley’s boys basketball team before a big home crowd. All five starters contributed to the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division leaders scoring 14 of the first 16 points in the opening 4 ½ minutes. And visiting McHenry didn’t have 16-point averager and top 3-point threat Shane Varvil to help make up the deficit because of an injured right foot. But relaxing made for a nerve-racking finish for the Red Raiders. They scored 9 of the last 11 points for a victorious 42-35 ending that wasn’t as happy as they originally envisioned.

  • Dundee-Crown gets past McHenry Jan 29, 2013 11:28 PM
A basketball player need not be a prolific scorer to be a catalyst, a lesson Dundee-Crown senior Jack Buckley imparted for the second straight game in Tuesday’s 44-40 victory over visiting McHenry. Dundee-Crown (14-5, 5-2 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division) led 37-25 entering the fourth quarter, but McHenry (9-10, 2-5) trimmed the deficit to a point on senior guard Korey Partenheimer’s strong drive from the left elbow with 1:03 remaining.

  • Cullen still unbeaten; Cary-Grove 2nd in FVC Jan 26, 2013 9:12 PM
It was clear going into Saturday's Fox Valley Conference finals that Crystal Lake Central's five-year reign as the league wrestling champion was over. The question was, would Cary-Grove's navy and white or McHenry's black and orange be the new colors of FVC wrestling royalty. McHenry's lead wasn't safe up only 10 points after Friday's prelims but sending 13 of 14 into the semifinals to Cary-Grove's 10 didn't seem to make the Warriors nervous. The Trojans closed in early with first place wins in 2 of the first 3 matches and watched three wrestlers earn titles, but McHenry grew stronger in the heavier classes and garnered 3 first-place winners, 3 second-place winners and 4 third-place medals to grab the overall championship over Cary-Grove, 261.50-210.

  • Cary-Grove chasing McHenry in FVC tournament Jan 25, 2013 11:30 PM
McHenry put the finishing touches on a strong first day at the 2013 Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament Friday by sending 13 of 14 into today's semifinals to help keep its division rival Cary-Grove at bay when the competition came to a close at Jacobs Friday night. The top two clubs in the Valley division are separated by 10 points (90-80) when action resumes today at 9 a.m., while Crystal Lake South stands third overall with 68 points, followed closely by Huntley which is one point behind the Gators in fourth.

Sarah Littleton shot a six-game series of 1,182 Friday to lead Grayslake North to the Fox Valley Conference girls bowling championship at Raymond's Bowl in Johnsburg. The Knights shot 5,278 as a team. Second place Grayslake Central had a 4,991 and third place McHenry a 4,907. Littleton's best game was a 235. She also had a 231 and a 202. Johnsburg's Allison Boelter, who finished ninth overall, had the high game of the day with a 267.

  • Crystal Lake South keeps pace in FVC Valley Jan 16, 2013 10:38 PM
It’s an old cliché but Crystal Lake South girls basketball coach Kyle McCaughn knew it was poignant, especially as his team prepared to play McHenry Wednesday night. “We know that the next game is the most important game,” McCaughn said. “Friday wouldn’t matter if we don’t come out tonight and play like we can.” Now Friday becomes a little more than important. The Gators took care of business Wednesday, beating McHenry 45-24, to set up a first-place showdown at Cary-Grove on Friday, with Huntley coming to Gator Alley next week. CLS, Cary-Grove and Huntley are all currently tied for first place in the Valley with 1 league loss each. CL South beat Cary-Grove 45-43 on Dec. 7.

  • Balanced Dundee-Crown handles McHenry Jan 11, 2013 10:46 PM
NewsDundee-Crown demonstrated balanced scoring right from the outset: 7 players accounted for the Chargers’ first 14 points. D-C wound up with 6 players scoring between 6 and 13 points in defeating McHenry, 60-46, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in McHenry Friday night.

  • Surging Jacobs rolls past McHenry Jan 8, 2013 10:44 PM
Balanced scoring and strong defense. Those attributes were key in Jacobs’ 67-49 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win over McHenry in Algonquin Tuesday night. After an 0-4 start, the Golden Eagles have won 7 of 10 and are an even .500 for the season at 7-7. Jacobs improves to 2-1 in league action.

  • Improving Jacobs meets its match in McHenry Dec 6, 2012 10:24 PM
Appointed as new coach for this season, there can be little doubt after only a few weeks the difference former St. Charles North assistant Gary Conrad is making with the Jacobs wrestling program. Last weekend the Golden Eagles won their first tournament but outdistancing 12 teams to win at the Tom DuBois Classic in Richmond-Burton. Earlier, the team had a very successful day at its own mega-duals. Thursday night the Golden Eagles had their biggest test of the season thus far against visiting McHenry, and the FVC Valley Division power Warriors left the cozy wrestling gym in Algonquin with a 40-24 victory as they improved to 10-0 in duals.

  • Andrews sisters lead Huntley by South Elgin Nov 19, 2012 10:16 PM
Most freshmen who start on a varsity team in their first year of high school basketball take a little while to get acclimated to the speed of the varsity game. Huntley's Ali Andrews is already proving to be anything but the typical freshman. Andrews had another sparkling effort Monday night, scoring a game-high 21 points to go along with 4 assists and 3 blocked shots as the Red Raiders rolled to a 56-34 win over South Elgin in the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Defense carries South Elgin by McHenry Nov 16, 2012 10:47 PM
Not much was going well offensively Friday evening for the South Elgin girls basketball team. But it was the Storm's defense that sparked an 18-0 run to break open a tie game and the Storm went on to beat McHenry, 46-33, in Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament play at South Elgin. "We got to down to business on defense," Storm junior Kennede Miller said. "On offense, we started making our layups. We started relaxing."

  • Hart’s Huntley crew playoff ready Oct 20, 2012 12:24 AM
Huntley coach John Hart was challenged prior to the season to leave Indiana as a two-time state champion and turn a 2-7 Red Raider team in a rugged Fox Valley Conference3 Valley Division into thinking they were winners. The 0-2 hole wasn't good with state champion Prairie Ridge, perennial powerhouse Crystal Lake South, an improved Jacobs squad and Cary-Grove on the schedule. But after a resounding 41-0 win over McHenry Friday night to finish 6-3 overall and 5-1 for second place in the FVC Valley, the avenues of success Huntley could venture down could make a GPS blow up in smoke.

  • Cary-Grove blanks McHenry Oct 16, 2012 11:15 PM
Dale Oppasser and Mike McKune fired top seed Cary-Grove (17-0-2) into the finals of the Class 3A Barrington boys soccer regional as the Trojans beat No. 4 McHenry 2-0 Tuesday night in the first of two matches at Barrington Community Park.
