  • In the end, Jacobs stops McHenry Jan 8, 2014 11:22 PM
The Jacobs boys basketball team finally got the defensive stops it sought in the closing minutes of Wednesday’s 53-50 home win over McHenry. Thanks to an offensive rebound by senior Robert Grant, junior guard Kenton Mack gave Jacobs (6-6, 2-0) the lead for good on a second-chance drive with 3:48 to play, marking the fifth and final lead change of the fourth quarter between the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division foes.

  • Palatine win streak hits 3 Dec 26, 2013 10:25 PM
Little by little, the Palatine boys basketball team is gaining a winning identity. Thursday night’s 53-48 win over a rugged McHenry team helped solidify it. The Pirates’ three-game win streak now has them at 5-5 for the season. The victory also pits them against Elk Grove in second-round championship bracket play Friday in the 40th annual Jack Tosh Tournament at York High School in Elmhurst.

  • Sweet turnaround continues for Carmel Dec 2, 2013 1:12 PM
Carmel hoped last year was just a start toward bigger and better days for its boys basketball program. That appears to be the case after the Corsairs reached a Class 3A sectional final and ended a streak of 21 consecutive losing seasons. Now they have started this season with four victories after claiming the title of Crystal Lake Central’s 7th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Thanksgiving Tournament with a 66-56 win over McHenry on Saturday afternoon.

  • South Elgin clamps down on McHenry Nov 23, 2013 7:48 PM
After giving up 78 points in a loss to Crystal Lake South Friday night, South Elgin girls basketball coach Tim Prendergast was looking for a much better defensive effort against McHenry on Saturday. The Storm coach’s wishes were granted. Limiting McHenry to 10 field goals and 25 percent shooting, the South Elgin defense was key in a 61-39 win in third round action of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.

  • Streamwood falls to McHenry Nov 22, 2013 10:48 PM
The Streamwood girls basketball team was on the verge of opening up a double-digit lead on McHenry in the game’s first six minutes Friday night. And then a complete 180 occurred at The Swamp in Crystal Lake, as the next 26 minutes for Streamwood were a different story. The Sabres were the ones starring at a double-digit deficit instead of the ones commanding it. McHenry changed to a zone defense, caught fire on the offensive end and the Sabres couldn’t keep up defensively in McHenry’s 60-28 thumping at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by Crystal Lake South.

  • McHenry ousts Crystal Lake South Oct 26, 2013 7:20 PM
Ryan Uhl knew exactly what was at stake. If the McHenry senior defender scored, the top-seeded Warriors would be Class 3A Crystal Lake South boys soccer regional champions. Uhl got the job done. He blasted a shot past Crystal Lake South senior goalkeeper Gus Alvarez which gave the Warriors a 3-1 advantage in the shootout and a 1-0 win over the third-seeded Gators to claim the regional championship Saturday in Crystal Lake.

  • Playoff bid secure for Dundee-Crown Oct 19, 2013 12:17 AM
The football congress at Dundee-Crown has spent the last 19 tumultuous years trying to figure out a plan to pass legislation to get into the playoffs. Some years they came close to striking a deal. Some years the Chargers adjourned with nothing and went back to the drawing board searching for other ways. Then there was a crisp, fall October evening like Friday when somehow all the stars and planets aligned, proving this time the Chargers wouldn’t fail. With a little bit of pressure to get a deal done before it really went into high gear next week against Jacobs, players from both sides met in the D-C Bowl and ended the playoff shutdown that had haunted the program for nearly two decades, a time span that began when no one on the current roster was born. The deal was signed, sealed and delivered in the Chargers’ 49-21 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over McHenry in Carpentersville

  • Huntley stays in the hunt Oct 11, 2013 11:39 PM
A lot of negatives was a positive sign for the Huntley defense on Friday night. McHenry had 13 plays stopped behind the line of scrimmage and the visiting Red Raiders’ first-team defense recovered 2 fumbles and allowed only 99 yards through nearly three quarters in a 42-14 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory at McCracken Field.

  • Cary-Grove turns up the offense in 4th straight win Oct 5, 2013 6:22 PM
After a less-than-stellar offensive effort in which Cary-Grove didn’t score a touchdown in a 6-0 win over Prairie Ridge last week, Trojans’ coach Brad Seaburg realized much better production was needed this week. Done. Scoring on its first 6 possessions of the game and compiling 478 yards of total offense with 27 first downs, the Trojans celebrated homecoming by steamrolling McHenry 48-14 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play at Cary-Grove’s Al Bohrer Field Saturday afternoon.

  • Reiser rises to Peoria Invite title Oct 5, 2013 6:38 PM
McHenry junior Jesse Reiser took first place at the Peoria Invitational at Detweiller Park in 14:34. The McHenry junior finished second at the Palatine Invitational last week, but this week he was able to answer the challenge by Alleman senior Zach Hird (14:35), who took second place. Vernon Hills took the team title with 136 points, followed by Sandburg (142 points) and York (169 points). Senior Blake Hallman (15:10) and junior Mike Anderson (15:12) went 9-10 in pacing Prospect to a fourth-place finish. Ivan Sanchez scored the game-winner with just over 13 minutes remaining and the Chargers held on for a 3-2 victory in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Carpentersville.

  • Big finish for York at Palatine Invite Sep 28, 2013 5:54 PM
York won its 28th boys cross country state title last year, and the Dukes are right on target to add a 29th this fall. On Saturday in a loaded Palatine Invitational field that included some of the top teams in the Midwest, York once again left its mark. Senior Alex Bashqawi and senior Nathan Mroz finished 1-3 in leading York to a commanding victory with 49 points, easily outdistancing Kentucky’s St. Xavier (107 points) and Hersey (112 points). Bashqawi (14:43) made a move 50 meters from the finish, overtaking McHenry junior Jesse Reiser ( 14:44) to win the individual title, with Mroz (14:45) in hot pursuit.

Jacobs big-played its way out of being numerically outplayed by McHenry in Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division football game in Algonquin. Junior Josh Walker returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown and ran for a 37-yard touchdown. Senior quarterback Bret Mooney had a near-perfect night as 3 of his 4 touchdown passes were in the mid-30s in yardage. And the Golden Eagles overcame an early 7-point deficit and a huge disparity in total plays run for a 42-14 victory on the school’s Hall of Fame night.

  • Larkin falls to McHenry Aug 31, 2013 11:18 PM
Larkin displayed how potent its offensive weapons can be in Saturday night’s nonconference football season opener at McHenry’s McCracken Field. Senior quarterback Kemmerin Blalark threw for 282 yards with 2 touchdowns to Dante Bonds and another to Quincy Topel. Sophomore Arthur Green caught 5 passes for 56 yards and Damion Clemons rushed for 91 yards. Unfortunately for the Royals, some self-destructive tendencies kept them from producing as many points as they could have in a 30-18 defeat.
