  • Dundee-Crown ‘Seals’ a winFeb 21, 2014 12:00 AM
Dundee-Crown junior Kiwi Seals thought his shot felt good when it left his hand with time running out and McHenry clinging to a 1-point lead in their Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game. Then Seals and the Chargers felt a bit uneasy as Seals’ pull-up 10-footer from the left of the lane over two defenders spun around the rim. “I felt pretty confident,” Seals said. “Then I got a little nervous and said, ‘This sucker had better stay down.’ ” It did just before the final buzzer sounded and the Chargers rushed the court to celebrate a 49-48 victory that spoiled McHenry’s senior night at its West Campus on Friday night.

  • Huntley rights ship, on verge of FVC Valley titleFeb 18, 2014 12:00 AM
There was too much at stake for Huntley to let a rough week slide by quietly. The Red Raiders didn’t see a major drop-off in their play as they lost three straight games. But their shrinking Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball lead raised enough concern to lead to a players-only meeting after Saturday night’s loss at Prairie Ridge. They came out Tuesday night looking to avoid their longest overall and league losing streaks in four years. The FVC Valley leaders did so in impressive fashion with a 53-33 victory over visiting McHenry.

  • Huntley’s Jessica Brock scrambles for a loose ball with McHenry’s Gabby Schweitzer, left, and Mckayla Snedker in the first quarter on Wednesday in Huntley.

First conference title since 2003 for Huntley Feb 5, 2014 12:00 AM
When visiting girls basketball teams turn to face the flag in Huntley’s gymnasium during the national anthem, players can’t help but notice a certain banner hanging just to the right of Old Glory, one that commemorates the 2013 Red Raiders’ fourth-place finish in Class 4A. Though the banner might intimidate some visitors, it can also serve as motivation for ambitious challengers looking to test themselves against a state-caliber program. Visiting McHenry didn’t seem intimidated in Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game when it cut Huntley’s 15-point halftime lead to 10 midway through the third quarter, but the Warriors could not keep pace for 32 minutes with the hungry Red Raiders, who clinched a share of the FVC Valley title with a 50-30 victory.

  • Fast start propels Jacobs past McHenry Feb 4, 2014 12:00 AM
Jacobs didn’t crash and burn once it cooled off after a torrid shooting start in Tuesday night’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game against McHenry. The Golden Eagles turned missed shots into extra opportunities as they crashed the offensive boards and burned the Warriors for 13 extra-chance points. And that proved to be a big difference as Jacobs moved into sole possession of second place in the division with a 57-47 victory at McHenry’s West Campus.

  • Huntley rolls over McHenry Jan 21, 2014 12:00 AM
Former Hoffman Estates coach and current Huntley assistant Bill Wandro joked that Huntley head coach Marty Manning was a bit of a worrywart all week. But Manning had good reason to worry about his team’s five-game win streak and spotless conference record in McHenry Tuesday night, since the Warriors had knocked off Crystal Lake South at home on Jan 10. And in Manning’s tenure, Huntley had never won by double digits in the McHenry West gym. “It’s always a tight game,” Manning said. “(McHenry) always plays with so much energy, they seem to shoot the ball extremely well on their home floor.” Except this time all the worry went for naught after the Red Raiders (11-4) came away with a 61-41 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division blowout for their sixth-straight win, a perfect (4-0) conference record and a sigh of relief for Manning, who can knock off the double-digit win in McHenry off his bucket list.

  • Sweet turnaround continues for Carmel Dec 1, 2013 12:00 AM

That appears to be the case after the Corsairs reached a Class 3A sectional final and ended a streak of 21 consecutive losing seasons. And then a complete 180 occurred at The Swamp in Crystal Lake, as the next 26 minutes for Streamwood were a different story. The Sabres were the ones starring at a double-digit deficit instead of the ones commanding it.
