  • McHenry beats Crystal Lake South in 3 OTs Jan 10, 2015 8:03 AM
For all the clutch shots Crystal Lake South junior guard Zach Geske buried to keep the Gators alive in their 48-46 triple overtime loss to McHenry Friday, there will be an unbelievable, but questionable, buzzer-beater by the Warriors’ Brian O’Toole that will overshadow Geske’s effort and be up for debate by many Gator fans for a very, very long time.

  • Jacobs opens FVC Valley play with decisive win Jan 6, 2015 11:16 PM
One thing about the flip of the calender benefiting the Jacobs boys basketball team: the Golden Eagles could leave their 2-game skid and disappointing fourth place finish in the Hinkle Holiday Classic behind them. As far as the new year is concerned, after the Golden Eagles downed the Warriors in McHenry 56-38 Tuesday to begin Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play, it’s safe to say they’ve forgotten about the past and adjusted their minds to what’s ahead for them in 2015.

Past Rolling Meadows players who helped steer the Mustangs girls basketball into one of the top programs in the area were in the stands for Monday’s nonconference game against visiting McHenry. Led by sophomore Kyra Spiwak (12 points, 4 assists) and junior Hannah Mickey (11 rebounds, 6 points), the Mustangs improved to 12-4 with a 57-32 triumph over the Warriors (8-9).

  • Another fine finish as Lake Zurich tips Crystal Lake South Jan 2, 2015 11:03 PM
Lake Zurich’s boys basketball team brought in the new year like it ended the old one. • Jacobs Van Vlierbergen makes it a FVC trifecta Oct 18, 2014 8:43 PM
Muddy, wet conditions. Didn’t matter. Annoying mist. Didn’t matter. You get the picture. Nothing was going to deter Jacobs senior standout Lauren Van Vlierbergen from capturing her third straight Fox Valley Conference individual championship. Van Vlierbergen, who finished fourth in Class 3A in 2013, posted a 3-mile time of 17:53.8 to finish first at Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference girls cross country championship at Hickory Nut Grove Park in Cary.

  • McHenry's Reiser right on track at Palatine Sep 27, 2014 9:31 PM
McHenry senior Jesse Reiser has learned a few things in the last year. Reiser finished second at the Palatine Invitational last season as York’s Alex Bashqawi used a strong kick to nip Reiser and secure the title. The McHenry senior didn’t make the same mistake two years in a row. Reiser ran a controlled race for the first 2 miles and made his surge with 800 meters remaining to claim the Palatine Invitational title, crossing the finish line in 14:38 at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve.

  • Crystal Lake South dominates McHenry Sep 26, 2014 11:32 PM
Crystal Lake South senior Alex Gardeck predicted a big return after he was forced to sit out last week’s game because of a pinhole tear in his trachea. “Today in study hall I told him (tailback Corey Sheehan) you are going for 200-plus yards,” Gardeck said, “and I told him (fullback Kyle Bartusch) you are going to have a big game.” Gardeck was right in the middle of leading Sheehan and Bartusch to career nights as he returned to his center spot Friday night at McCracken Field in McHenry. • Tough opener for Teonic, Larkin Aug 30, 2014 7:47 PM
Dragan Teonic likes to think of himself as a glass half-full type of guy. So even though the scoreboard was weighted heavily against Larkin’s football team Saturday afternoon, the new Royals’ head coach was realistic and positive after his first game at Memorial Field. “We are young and we are inexperienced,” Teonic said. “We played 10-12 sophomores and 11 seniors and that’s it. There’s some growth to be had but we had a lot of growth during the game. We did things better. The scoreboard doesn’t show that but as we figure things out the scoreboard will show that.” What the scoreboard showed Saturday was McHenry 61, Larkin 12.

One of the key points of emphasis for the Huntley girls soccer team as it headed into the postseason was doing its job offensively. The Red Raiders improved to a 12-0 advantage over their opponents in the playoffs with a 5-0 win in Wednesday’s Class 3A Rockford Auburn sectional semifinal over Fox Valley Conference foe McHenry.
