  • Motivated Hampshire rolls over McHenry Feb 27, 2015 10:46 PM
High school basketball careers are nearing the finish line for Hampshire’s seniors and retiring head coach Bob Barnett. But the Whip-Purs showed they could prolong the inevitable ending by playing at the level they did Friday night in a 53-32 Fox Valley Conference boys crossover victory at McHenry.

  • Hampshire’s Barnett announces coaching retirement Feb 23, 2015 9:32 PM
Hampshire boys basketball coach Bob Barnett announced his retirement from coaching Monday afternoon, effective at the end of the season. • Huntley’s Andrews sets school career scoring record Feb 11, 2015 10:28 PM
When Samantha Mader was setting the career scoring record for Huntley’s girls basketball program, Ali Andrews was just learning how to dribble a basketball. Eleven years later, Andrews is now the Red Raiders’ all-time leading scorer. Needing just 3 points to break Mader’s career record of 1,655 set in 2004, Andrews first made 1 of 2 free throws, then, with 4:53 left in the first quarter, she stepped back and hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to become Huntley’s career leader. The 6-foot-2 Illinois recruit, still just a junior, went on to score 22 points in leading the Red Raiders to a 45-27 win over McHenry Wednesday night.

  • McHenry knocks off Crystal Lake South again Feb 6, 2015 10:23 PM
Playing Crystal Lake South brings out the best in McHenry’s boys basketball team. “We don’t like them and they don’t like us, that’s pretty much it,” said McHenry junior guard Nick Bellich. “It’s a fun game. We love playing them because they’re a really good team.” The Fox Valley Conference Valley Division matchups have not been much fun lately for the Gators. The Warriors completed a regular-season sweep for the second straight year as Bellich scored a game-high 22 points in a 61-55 victory Friday night at McHenry’s West Campus.

  • Huntley rolls as Andrews closes in on record Feb 4, 2015 10:15 PM
A long run of sustained success does not have Huntley settling for anything less than its best. Red Raiders coach Steve Raethz did not like what he saw in the first minute of the second half and burned a timeout even though his team was leading the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball game by 16 points at McHenry. They also didn’t take lightly seeing their lead cut to 10 late in the third quarter. Huntley proceeded to turn up the defensive pressure and broke away to a 52-33 victory Wednesday night that was its 13th in a row and 18th in its last 19 games.

  • Jacobs overcomes McHenry Feb 3, 2015 10:50 PM
While the tests keep mounting for the Jacobs boys basketball team, the Golden Eagles are showing they can answer just about anything you throw at them. Last week it was depth. Tuesday it was all mental and in its 53-38 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over McHenry at the Eagles Nest in Algonquin, Jacobs (16-5, 6-0) not only shook off the rust of 6 days in between games, but the lack of practice time due to Monday’s weather cancellations.

  • Jacobs nails down first FVC title Jan 31, 2015 9:40 PM
After finding itself on top of the competition at the end of day one of the Fox Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, Jacobs’ wrestling team had one goal in mind: win the FVC for the first time in school history. Despite being one of two Top 10 teams without an individual conference championship, the Golden Eagles had 14 wrestlers battle for a Top 5 spot and needed every one of them to hold off McHenry and win the conference title. Jacobs finished with 208.5 points, 7 ahead of the host school, Saturday afternoon at McHenry.

  • Jacobs in good position to win first FVC crown Jan 30, 2015 10:37 PM
What a difference a year makes. Last season, a less than sparkling opening day at the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament all but erased the hopes for Jacobs of a top four finish. On Friday, things were different for coach Gary Conrads’ club and with the Golden Eagles on the front foot from the opening bout, Jacobs finds itself heading into Saturday’s final day of the conference tournament with an 8-point lead, 105-97 over host McHenry, and 23-more than division rival Cary-Grove (82.0) which enjoyed a solid first day.

  • Girls bowling: Grayslake North wins FVC title Jan 30, 2015 11:06 PM

  • Parson’s 3 lifts Dundee-Crown over McHenry Jan 23, 2015 11:24 PM
A lot of work in a short amount of time Friday night allowed Dundee-Crown to celebrate the benefits of all the time and effort it spent this week on a new play for Caleb Parson. A 3-pointer by Parson from the top of the key with two seconds to play wiped out a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes and gave the Chargers a 41-40 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball victory at McHenry’s West Campus.

  • It’s all coming together for Huntley Jan 22, 2015 9:48 AM
What the Huntley boys basketball team is doing off the court is starting to carry over to success on the court. After a 1-7 start the Red Raiders have now gone 6-4 in their last 10 games following a 41-27 win over visiting McHenry in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action on Wednesday night.

  • McHenry beats Crystal Lake South in 3 OTs Jan 10, 2015 8:03 AM
For all the clutch shots Crystal Lake South junior guard Zach Geske buried to keep the Gators alive in their 48-46 triple overtime loss to McHenry Friday, there will be an unbelievable, but questionable, buzzer-beater by the Warriors’ Brian O’Toole that will overshadow Geske’s effort and be up for debate by many Gator fans for a very, very long time.

  • Jacobs opens FVC Valley play with decisive win Jan 6, 2015 11:16 PM
One thing about the flip of the calender benefiting the Jacobs boys basketball team: the Golden Eagles could leave their 2-game skid and disappointing fourth place finish in the Hinkle Holiday Classic behind them. As far as the new year is concerned, after the Golden Eagles downed the Warriors in McHenry 56-38 Tuesday to begin Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play, it’s safe to say they’ve forgotten about the past and adjusted their minds to what’s ahead for them in 2015.

Past Rolling Meadows players who helped steer the Mustangs girls basketball into one of the top programs in the area were in the stands for Monday’s nonconference game against visiting McHenry. They got to see first hand that the current players are doing a fine job of sustaining the success. Led by sophomore Kyra Spiwak (12 points, 4 assists) and junior Hannah Mickey (11 rebounds, 6 points), the Mustangs improved to 12-4 with a 57-32 triumph over the Warriors (8-9).

  • Another fine finish as Lake Zurich tips Crystal Lake South Jan 2, 2015 11:03 PM
Lake Zurich’s boys basketball team brought in the new year like it ended the old one. Only the venue was different as the Bears finished with a strong effort in the final few minutes to get past Crystal Lake South 57-51 in a nonconference game at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday. Lake Zurich scored the final 10 points and held the Gators scoreless for the last couple of minutes.
