  • Tough opener for Teonic, Larkin Aug 30, 2014 7:47 PM
Dragan Teonic likes to think of himself as a glass half-full type of guy. So even though the scoreboard was weighted heavily against Larkin’s football team Saturday afternoon, the new Royals’ head coach was realistic and positive after his first game at Memorial Field. “We are young and we are inexperienced,” Teonic said. “We played 10-12 sophomores and 11 seniors and that’s it. There’s some growth to be had but we had a lot of growth during the game. We did things better. The scoreboard doesn’t show that but as we figure things out the scoreboard will show that.” What the scoreboard showed Saturday was McHenry 61, Larkin 12.

  • Huntley heads to sectional final May 28, 2014 11:07 PM
One of the key points of emphasis for the Huntley girls soccer team as it headed into the postseason was doing its job offensively. Red Raiders’ coach Kris Grabner hoped to see his team break out of its scoring funk and the work in practice over the past 2 weeks has seemingly been effective. The Red Raiders improved to a 12-0 advantage over their opponents in the playoffs with a 5-0 win in Wednesday’s Class 3A Rockford Auburn sectional semifinal over Fox Valley Conference foe McHenry.

I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.

  • McHenry comes back to beat Jacobs May 9, 2014 10:25 PM
McHenry reminded Jacobs on Friday why the 21st and final out of a high school baseball game is often the hardest to get. The Golden Eagles had a 5-run lead and were moments away from enjoying a festive postgame Senior Day celebration when the never-say-die Warriors again worked their seventh-inning comeback magic. They erupted for 5 runs — 2 with two outs — to tie the Fox Valley Conference contest, and they scored another in the eighth to prevail 8-7.

  • Dundee-Crown ‘Seals’ a win Feb 21, 2014 10:28 PM
Dundee-Crown junior Kiwi Seals thought his shot felt good when it left his hand with time running out and McHenry clinging to a 1-point lead in their Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game. Then Seals and the Chargers felt a bit uneasy as Seals’ pull-up 10-footer from the left of the lane over two defenders spun around the rim. “I felt pretty confident,” Seals said. “Then I got a little nervous and said, ‘This sucker had better stay down.’ ” It did just before the final buzzer sounded and the Chargers rushed the court to celebrate a 49-48 victory that spoiled McHenry’s senior night at its West Campus on Friday night.

  • Huntley rights ship, on verge of FVC Valley title Feb 18, 2014 10:59 PM
There was too much at stake for Huntley to let a rough week slide by quietly. The Red Raiders didn’t see a major drop-off in their play as they lost three straight games. But their shrinking Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball lead raised enough concern to lead to a players-only meeting after Saturday night’s loss at Prairie Ridge. They came out Tuesday night looking to avoid their longest overall and league losing streaks in four years. The FVC Valley leaders did so in impressive fashion with a 53-33 victory over visiting McHenry.

  • First conference title since 2003 for Huntley Feb 5, 2014 11:12 PM
When visiting girls basketball teams turn to face the flag in Huntley’s gymnasium during the national anthem, players can’t help but notice a certain banner hanging just to the right of Old Glory, one that commemorates the 2013 Red Raiders’ fourth-place finish in Class 4A. Though the banner might intimidate some visitors, it can also serve as motivation for ambitious challengers looking to test themselves against a state-caliber program. Visiting McHenry didn’t seem intimidated in Wednesday’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game when it cut Huntley’s 15-point halftime lead to 10 midway through the third quarter, but the Warriors could not keep pace for 32 minutes with the hungry Red Raiders, who clinched a share of the FVC Valley title with a 50-30 victory.

  • Fast start propels Jacobs past McHenry Feb 4, 2014 10:22 PM
Jacobs didn’t crash and burn once it cooled off after a torrid shooting start in Tuesday night’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game against McHenry. The Golden Eagles turned missed shots into extra opportunities as they crashed the offensive boards and burned the Warriors for 13 extra-chance points. And that proved to be a big difference as Jacobs moved into sole possession of second place in the division with a 57-47 victory at McHenry’s West Campus.

  • Crystal Lake South happy with FVC runner-up finish Feb 1, 2014 8:03 PM
Sure, Crystal Lake South coach Ross Ryan would like to have hoisted the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament championship trophy Saturday at McHenry High School. But Ryan was happy with his team’s second place conference finish. Wrestling without 195-pounder Brian Pence, the Gators (163 ½ points) were runner-up to Crystal Lake Central, which claimed top honors with 199 points. Cary-Grove was third a half point behind South with 163 points.

  • Huntley rolls over McHenry Jan 21, 2014 11:17 PM
Former Hoffman Estates coach and current Huntley assistant Bill Wandro joked that Huntley head coach Marty Manning was a bit of a worrywart all week. But Manning had good reason to worry about his team’s five-game win streak and spotless conference record in McHenry Tuesday night, since the Warriors had knocked off Crystal Lake South at home on Jan 10. And in Manning’s tenure, Huntley had never won by double digits in the McHenry West gym. “It’s always a tight game,” Manning said. “(McHenry) always plays with so much energy, they seem to shoot the ball extremely well on their home floor.” Except this time all the worry went for naught after the Red Raiders (11-4) came away with a 61-41 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division blowout for their sixth-straight win, a perfect (4-0) conference record and a sigh of relief for Manning, who can knock off the double-digit win in McHenry off his bucket list.
