  • Marmion packs plenty of firepower Aug 22, 2014 2:57 PM
Marmion coach Dan Thorpe thinks this season’s Cadets games will be most entertaining. As the season progresses he hopes they’re less so. Thorpe is confident in an offense that should have speed, power, offensive line crunch and receiving capabilities to move the football. He believes in the potential of his special teams. But from an 8-3 squad Marmion returns one defensive starter. He hopes to mold a unit that eventually will slow opponents down.

  • Burlington Central second at Larkin invite Aug 20, 2014 10:27 PM
It looks like life will go on just fine in the post-Matt Weber era for the Burlington Central boys’ golf team. In their first tournament since the departure of the Fox Valley area’s top golfer from a year ago, the Rockets finished in second place in the Larkin Invitational at The Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin on Wednesday. Central recorded a team score of 320 just 2 strokes behind the tournament winner DeKalb.

As a student at St. Rita of Cascia School in Aurora, each fall for four years Joe Currie rode his bicycle to Marmion where he was a team manager for the football team. He’ll now be driving the bus for the Cadets varsity basketball team, figuratively if not literally as well.

  • Looking back at another season filled with memorable moments Jun 13, 2014 9:00 AM
This is it. This is my last column of the 2013-2014 school year. That might elicit a chorus of cheers from some readers but for me it means that another high school sports season has come and gone.

  • Former St. Charles prep stars selected in MLB Draft Jun 12, 2014 10:58 PM
Being a left-handed pitcher can have its advantages. If you want proof, just ask St. Charles’ Wes Benjamin and Zach Hirsch, who were among the 1,215 picks selected during the 3-day Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft that concluded Saturday.

  • Marmion’s Troop turns in dominating senior season Jun 12, 2014 1:07 PM
Marmion fans spent much of the past few months cheering for senior Alex Troop, a left-handed pitcher who was nearly unhittable in leading the Cadets to another conference championship. Before that, Troop was leading the cheers, watching his classmates on the hard court playing a sport that he also used to excel at.

Pumped up after winning his heat of the 300 hurdles, his fourth qualifying event of the day, Kaneland’s Dylan Nauert summarized his physical status. “I feel better than I ever have on the track,” said the mustachioed senior, who overcame midseason hamstring and groin injuries to feel “100 percent.”

Marmion entered the Class 4A Downers Grove South regional Thursday in an offensive funk, scoring no runs in its previous three games.
