  • Kaneland claims title at East Moline Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Showing strength over all three levels, Kaneland won East Moline's United Township Kiwanis Invitational for the first time in its seven trips there. "It was one of those where we hit on almost every cylinder," said Knights coach Eric Baron. "We scored in every event." Getting what Baron called "a pleasant surprise" out of pole vaulter Dylan Kuiper and a personal-best shot put mark of 52 feet, 4 inches from Nate Dyer among many highlights, Kaneland's 260 points topped United's 220.50, Geneseo's 204 and Rock Island's 184.

  • About time we’ve got baseball and softball to talk about Apr 1, 2013 12:00 AM
In celebration of the opening week of the high school baseball/softball season, here are 9 things on my mind:

  • Streaking Batavia rallies by Marmion for 4-0 start Mar 30, 2013 12:00 AM
How long has it been since the Batavia baseball team started 4-0? So long that Matt Holm, who has been coaching the Bulldogs the past 21 seasons, couldn't remember ever doing it. Batavia capped a perfect first week of the season with a 2-run rally in the sixth inning Saturday, beating a Marmion roster filled with several kids who grew up in Batavia playing with many of these Bulldogs. That 5-3 victory — and the 4-0 record with wins over Wheaton Warrenville South, Willowbrook and Naperville North — was music to Batavia catcher Dino Simoncelli's ears.

    Geneva’s 8-run 7th stuns Marmion Mar 28, 2013 12:00 AM
Geneva baseball coach Matt Hahn likes to stress to his team the importance of answering. "If they score, we've got to score at least one run (the next inning) to get some momentum," said Hahn. "It doesn't matter how many." The Vikings certainly had the final answer Thursday afternoon. After Marmion (1-1) put up a 4-spot in the bottom of the sixth to take a seemingly commanding 10-5 lead, Geneva (3-1) responded with an 8-run seventh, capped by Mitch Endriukaitis' towering 3-run home run, to rally for a 13-10 nonconference triumph over the Cadets in Geneva.

  • Students receive scholarships to attend Marmion Academy Mar 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Page Ten eighth-graders have been awarded academic scholarships to attend Marmion Academy next fall. Scholarships were awarded based on performance on the entrance exam held in December 2012, in which 198 eighth-grade boys participated. The following have received scholarships as members of Marmion's class of 2017.

Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."

  • Cubs affiliation excites Cougars Mar 18, 2013 12:00 AM
So much for Spring fever. It certainly hasn't felt like baseball weather these days. Bone-chilling temperatures have been the norm instead of the exception this month while shoveling snow has been much more commonplace than seeing local baseball or softball players swinging bats outdoors. At this point, I'd actually settle for a few 45-degree afternoons rather than the 30-degree temperatures that we've been experiencing lately across Chicagoland. But believe it or not, baseball season is just around the corner — I think. Weather permitting, of course. Nobody is looking forward to the first pitch of the 2013 season more than Kane County Cougars general manager Curtis Haug.

Looking back at the best of the basketball season Mar 13, 2013 12:00 AM
As the high school boys basketball season enters its final week, one important question remains — can anyone stop Simeon from capturing its fourth consecutive Class 4A state championship this weekend in Peoria? West Aurora, which suffered a 60-47 loss to the 3-time defending state champions in the finals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament back in late December, found itself one half away from another crack at the top-ranked Wolverines until a 17-0 third-quarter run by Proviso East in Tuesday night's Hinsdale Central supersectional ended the Blackhawks' season. Proviso East's 62-52 come-from-beind win sets up a rematch of last year's 4A state title game — won by Simeon in an instant classic, 50-48. It has been 5 years since the last non-Chicago Public League team captured the 4A state title — Richards in 2008. Here is my personal recap of the 2012-13 boys/girls basketball season:

Saying goodbye to seniors never an easy job Mar 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Win and advance. Lose and go home. Those are the basics when describing the annual Illinois High School Association’s boys basketball tournament. However, it doesn’t tell the entire story. In fact, it’s an oversimplification that barely scratches the surface.

  • St. Charles North sets 3 team records at state Feb 26, 2013 12:00 AM
When St. Charles North boys swimming coach Rob Rooney got around to changing the record boards at the North Stars’ swimming pool this week, he had more than a little work to do. St. Charles North set three team records during the state swim meet at New Trier. Two of the three records were set during Friday’s prelims. First Austin Stepella, David Chokran, Nick Kowaleski and Kyle Gannon swam 1:34.39 in the 200 medley relay. A day later, that quartet swam only marginally slower – 1:34.48 – and finished fourth. That quartet set the stage for a special Saturday for the North Stars.

Everyone shares a goal next week — survive and advance Feb 23, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a few weeks of the year that I enjoy a little more than most. This coming week is one of them. Monday night signals the opening tip-off of the Illinois High School Association's annual basketball tournament at gymnasiums throughout the state. It's America's Original March Madness with a 4-day head start this time around that I like to call, "February Frenzy."

Marmion takes 2nd in state Feb 23, 2013 12:00 AM
The Marmion wrestling team had virtually no margin for error. For a program which had never even had an individual state qualifier until its seventh season in existence, the Cadets' appearance in the Class 3A dual-team state finals against four-time champion Sandburg was yet another milestone achievement for the 11-year old team. But the Cadets' hopes of terminating Sandburg unraveled as the defending champion Eagles blitzed Marmion with 32 unanswered points en route to a 38-17 victory Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
