    St. Viator coach Mike Howland was hoping the visiting Marist Red Hawks would give the Lions a tough defensive game. Howland received his wish in a 49-40 win in the East Suburban Catholic at Cahill Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

    Is there such a thing as stunned expectation? If so, Naperville Central's football team displayed it with authority Saturday night. Rallying from a 2-touchdown second-half deficit, the Redhawks pulled out a thrilling 27-21 victory over visiting Marist in the Class 8A semifinals to advance to the championship game for the first time since 2001.

  • Marist tops Carmel Oct 5, 2013 12:13 AM
    Marist 35, Carmel 23: The host Redawks bolted to a 28-3 halftime lead, as quarterback Jack Donegan threw 4 touchdown passes, 3 to Flynn Nagel, in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game. Marist improved to 4-2 and 3-1, while Carmel fell to 1-5 and 1-3. The loss eliminated the Corsairs from playoff contention for the second straight year. Carmelís Christian Heinz scored from 5 yards out and caught TD passes of 16 and 17 yards from Michael Huiras. Huiras also rushed for a score, as the Corsairs made things interesting by scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter. Nagel had 9 receptions. He scored on passes covering 68, 35 and 8 yards. Donegan finished 21 of 26 for 305 yards.

    After a tough loss to Marist last season, Benet wanted to make sure the same outcome didnít happen again this year. The Redwings made some adjustments and dominated its way to a 34-24 football victory on senior night at Benedictine University.

    Marist forced 4 Carmel turnovers, including a fumble in the redzone off a strip by lineman Shannon Smith. The RedHawks also held Carmelís rushing attack to just 173 yards, and its offense in general to a total of only 187 yards in a decisive 28-7 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.

  • Gorman connects as Marist sinks Elk Grove Jun 9, 2012 12:00 AM
    Marist senior right fielder Maggie Gorman had 3 RBI in 76 at-bats heading into Friday's IHSA Class 4A state semifinal. The Redhawks' No. 8 hitter added 2 more at the Eastside Centre. These two will go down in school history. They came when Gorman clubbed a two-out, 2-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference in Marist's 2-0 shutout over Elk Grove. Gorman's second home run of her three-year varsity career advanced Marist to its first state championship for softball. The Redhawks (26-11) will face Bartlett (32-8) for the state crown at 5 p.m. today while Elk Grove (31-9) meets Moline (30-11) at 2:30 p.m. for third place.
