    High school athletes across the suburbs face off on basketball courts, football fields and baseball diamonds; they size each other up in tennis matches, around golf tees and across wrestling mats. The give it their all for their schools, their teams, their classmates and their coaches. The Daily Herald put together a video to honor athletes at our suburban high schools.     After a tough loss to Marist last season, Benet wanted to make sure the same outcome didn’t happen again this year. The Redwings made some adjustments and dominated its way to a 34-24 football victory on senior night at Benedictine University.

     
  • Marist defense steps forward against Carmel Sep 28, 2012 12:00 AM
    Marist forced 4 Carmel turnovers, including a fumble in the redzone off a strip by lineman Shannon Smith. The RedHawks also held Carmel’s rushing attack to just 173 yards, and its offense in general to a total of only 187 yards in a decisive 28-7 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.

    Gorman connects as Marist sinks Elk Grove Jun 8, 2012 12:00 AM
    Marist senior right fielder Maggie Gorman had 3 RBI in 76 at-bats heading into Friday's IHSA Class 4A state semifinal. The Redhawks' No. 8 hitter added 2 more at the Eastside Centre. These two will go down in school history. They came when Gorman clubbed a two-out, 2-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference in Marist's 2-0 shutout over Elk Grove. Gorman's second home run of her three-year varsity career advanced Marist to its first state championship for softball. The Redhawks (26-11) will face Bartlett (32-8) for the state crown at 5 p.m. today while Elk Grove (31-9) meets Moline (30-11) at 2:30 p.m. for third place.

    He has been running the show for 32 seasons but hall of fame coach Ken Grams will be the first to tell you it's about the kids. The kids, however, are saying this one is for the coach. All-state pitcher Dani Goranson and the Elk Grove Grenadiers would love to play in an Class 4A state softball championship game for their dedicated mentor of four decades. First, however, they are focused on today's semifinal opponent from the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Marist (25-15) and Elk Grove (31-8) will be meeting for the first time in Grams' 32 seasons when they face off in at 2:30 p.m. semifinal at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria. The other semifinal at 5 p.m. features Bartlett (31-8) and defending 4A champ Moline (30-10).

    St. Viator meets Marist’s challenge May 1, 2012 12:00 AM
    When St. Viator fell behind 9-1 in the opening game of Tuesdays boys volleyball match against perennial power Marist, it looked like it was going to be a long night for the host Lions. To be honest, said Viator senior Matt Michalik, I felt like this one was getting away from us. But the Lions refused to let the game slip away instead, in an inspired performance, they took control and shocked the visiting Redhawks 25-22, 15-25, 25-19 in an upset that approached David vs. Goliath proportions. Six-foot-3 senior middle hitter Tom Aichele led the way for the Lions with 7 kills in what St. Viator coach Chris Boylan called the most important victory for the program since 2005, when the team won a regional title.

    Having fun at the state finals was the theme this weekend for the St. Charles East girls volleyball team, so it was fitting the effervescent Saints departed Redbird Arena Saturday night sporting wide grins and toting a third-place state trophy after a 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 victory over Marist.

     
  • Marist prevails at Carmel in a wild one Oct 14, 2011 12:00 AM
    Marist earned an incredible 64-63 double overtime against host Carmel on Friday night. The victory automatically qualifies Marist for the playoffs at 6-2 and still gives them hope for an ESCC crown when they host Joliet Catholic next week. Carmel (5-3, 5-2) lost for the third time this year and will need a win at Benet next week to automatically qualify for the playoffs.

The last four ESCC races have ended with defending champ Carmel and perennial powerhouse Joliet Catholic in the top two spots.

In all, more than 2,000 students will be competing, as they showcase the best dance, flag and poms routines from throughout the state.
