Marist senior right fielder Maggie Gorman had 3 RBI in 76 at-bats heading into Friday's IHSA Class 4A state semifinal. The Redhawks' No. 8 hitter added 2 more at the Eastside Centre. These two will go down in school history. They came when Gorman clubbed a two-out, 2-run homer over the left field fence in the top of the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference in Marist's 2-0 shutout over Elk Grove. Gorman's second home run of her three-year varsity career advanced Marist to its first state championship for softball. The Redhawks (26-11) will face Bartlett (32-8) for the state crown at 5 p.m. today while Elk Grove (31-9) meets Moline (30-11) at 2:30 p.m. for third place.

St. Viator meets Marist’s challenge May 1, 2012 12:00 AM
When St. Viator fell behind 9-1 in the opening game of Tuesdays boys volleyball match against perennial power Marist, it looked like it was going to be a long night for the host Lions. To be honest, said Viator senior Matt Michalik, I felt like this one was getting away from us. But the Lions refused to let the game slip away instead, in an inspired performance, they took control and shocked the visiting Redhawks 25-22, 15-25, 25-19 in an upset that approached David vs. Goliath proportions. Six-foot-3 senior middle hitter Tom Aichele led the way for the Lions with 7 kills in what St. Viator coach Chris Boylan called the most important victory for the program since 2005, when the team won a regional title.
