  • Watzlawick hurt in Hampshire’s win Feb 8, 2011 10:13 PM
Hampshire picked up a big conference win, but nobody in the Whip-Purs’ locker room was celebrating much. That’s because center Tyler Watzlawick went down early in the game with a high ankle injury. Tyler Crater and Shane Hernandez helped fill the scoring void with 12 points apiece and the Whips didn’t need much offense to defeat Marengo, 46-20, in Big Northern East boys basketball action in Hampshire Tuesday night. But the concern after the game was for Hampshire’s leading scorer and rebounder. He went to the hospital for X-rays, but even a best-case scenario would have him missing Friday’s conference matchup with North Boone and possibly more time. “I’m not expecting him back for Friday,” said Hampshire coach Bob Barnett. “We’ll wait and see what the word is, and I might hold him out for next Tuesday against Genoa.” Hampshire led just 7-6 late in the first quarter, but driving layups by Pat Azizi and David Wilson started an 11-0 run that put Hampshire firmly in control. The Whip-Purs (17-4, 8-0) were determined to be ready for the Indians’ slowdown tactics. Marengo took the air out of the ball in the teams’ first meeting in Marengo and the Whips were slow to adjust. “The last time they came out and stalled and kind of slowed us down a little bit,” said Hernandez. “This game was different. We came out strong and got over their slowing down the ball. This time we worked it in and got more touches inside compared to the last game.” Hernandez also had 4 rebounds and 3 blocks. Azizi finished with 9 points and 4 assists. Pat Dumoulin, filling in for Watzlawick, scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Zack Lundquist had 6 points and 9 rebounds for Marengo (5-17, 2-6). Austin Brettschneider added 6 points, but no one else had more than 2.

  • Burlington Central controls Marengo Jan 28, 2011 10:29 PM
Burlington Central finally got to play its game. After a slow start, the Rockets forced Marengo into an up-tempo game. The pace definitely worked to the Rockets’ advantage, as they pulled away for a 70-58 Big Northern East boys basketball win in Marengo Friday night. Ray Hunnicutt and Sam Klein scored 18 points apiece for the Rockets (11-8, 5-1). The Rockets trailed 14-11 midway through the second quarter. They took the lead for good with an 8-1 run just before halftime, then broke the game open with a 10-0 spurt in the third period. “We just forced them to do some things that put the tempo in our favor,” said Central coach Brett Porto. “We got the game going the way we wanted, were able to use our bench. “Then toward the end of the second quarter and into the second half, Ray and Sam took over, and we had some guys hit 3-pointers at key times.” Klein hit a pair of 3-pointers, Ryan Ritchie had 2 in the second half, and Jared Moxness made a key one in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a wild series of charges and countercharges. Led by Zack Lundquist, who had all 14 of his points in the second half, Marengo made a series of late runs. But each time the Rockets answered. A 9-0 spurt got the Indians within 54-45 with 5:44 left, but Ritchie answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession. The Indians got as close as 61-54 on a 3-pointer by Anthony Mallegni, but could get no closer. Klein added 9 rebounds for the Rockets. Hunnicutt had 8 rebounds and 4 assists, and Thomas Fitzgerald 13 points and 6 rebounds for the Rockets. Austin Brettschneider added 13 points, and Justin Gaines had 10 off the bench for Marengo (5-16, 2-5).
