Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

Matt Swanson threw a 7-hitter as Maine West topped Lane Tech 7-1 in the Maine West Class 4A regional semifinal. Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows couldn't hold early leads in 4A losses and Leyden advanced to the regional final.

Northwest roundup/No letdown for Conant May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Mid-Suburban League softball champion Conant opened the state tournament with a 5-0 shutout over Hoffman Estates in the Hawks' Class 4A regional semifinal. Seeded No. 1 in the Barrington sectional, the Cougars (30-3) advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. regional title game against the winner of today's semifinal between No. 8 Hersey and No. 9 Palatine.Senior Briana Cavin (27-2) threw a 6-hitter with 9 strikeouts and she went 3-for-4 with 1 run. Shortstop Allie Bauch was also 3-for-4 with a run teammates while Miranda Cavin, Kim Jacobson, Sarah Thompson, Megan Reff and Barb Linderman had the RBI for Conant. Plus other regional semifinals including softball teams from the northwest suburbs.

Conant success continues May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Conant ended its most successful regular season by splitting a doubleheader with New Trier on Saturday in Hoffman Estates. In a battle between two top-seeded sectional teams, the Cougars (30-3) outlasted the Trevians in Game 1 for a 2-1 victory in nine innings. Junior Miranda Cavin singled, went to second on Kim Jacobson's sacrifice and eventually scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Plus other softball games from the northwest suburbs.

Ellie Ackermann scored her sixth goal at 6:58 of the third overtime to give top-seed Barrington a 1-0 victory over Cary-Grove in the Lake Zurich Class 3A regional final.

Shaffer’s big drop leads Prospect May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Quentin Shaffer needed a big time drop in the 3,200 meters just to qualify for next weekend's boys state track meet. The Prospect junior got a huge drop of nearly 24 seconds to win the event in 9:17.78 to lead the Knights big crew of qualifiers from the Loyola Class 3A sectional.

Fremd battles to finish third May 13, 2012 12:00 AM
Fremd battled through plenty of adversity to claim its fourth top-three trophy since 2007 by finishing third at the state badminton tournament. Senior Annie Huang took sixth in singles and senior Ji Young Seo and junior Kelly Owens took sixth in doubles. Palatine senior Maggie Van Grondelle took fifth in singles to become only the second four-time medalist in state history and Prospect's doubles team of Shea Gallus and Noreen Caporusso took fifth.

It was an upset-filled day for the unexpected at the state badminton tournament in Charleston. Fremd senior Annie Huang pulled a big one to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals and help the Vikings to a share of first place with Stevenson.

Valles leads Maine West to CSL North co-championship May 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Maine West ace Ariel Valles shut out visiting Deerfield 3-0 on Friday as the Warriors finished as co-champions in the Central Suburban North in coach Amy Gonzales first season. The Warriors (21-9) and Glenbrook North each finished 9-1 in the conference and they split games during the season. Valles (16-6) gave up only 4 hits and striking out 7. Teammate Katie Fitzgerald went 3-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBI while Angela Cruz was 1-for-2 with a double and a 1 run.

Elk Grove clinches MSL title game berthMay 9, 2012 12:00 AM
For the 12th time since 2000, Elk Groves softball team is headed to the Mid-Suburban League championship game. Coach Ken Grams Grenadiers sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning at Hersey on Tuesday and scored 12 runs. Senior Dani Goranson went on to fire a 1-hitter as the Grens posted a 13-0 five-inning triumph. The Grens (22-5, 11-2) have a five-game lead over second-place Rolling Meadows (15-13, 6-7) with three to play. Plus other softball games in the northwest suburbs.
