Dist. 207 anti-hazing consultant says staff 'overwhelmed' Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
The consultant hired by Maine Township High School District 207 to lead anti-hazing focus groups at its three high schools recommends the district take steps to include students in decision making and leadership activities, and provide more staff training on bullying intervention. The 24-page Community Matters report recently released to the District 207 school board was the result of a “school climate audit” of all three district high schools.

Back to the place where he cut his coaching teeth, first-year head coach Jeff Bishop enjoyed a homecoming of sorts after watching his team from Maine West roll over Maine East 6-0 on a cold, rainy Tuesday afternoon in Park Ridge. The visiting Warriors (4-7-1) shrugged off a slow start and stormed into the lead with consecutive goals from Alice Faraone. Maine West used another by Alexia Prosperi at the half-hour to put away its crosstown rival for good.

District 207 rebates taxes to Maine Township residents Mar 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Maine Township taxpayers will receive $1 million tax abatement from Maine Township High School District 207. The measure was approved at Monday night’s school board meeting. "We believe our financial management and cost-containment efforts have put us in a position that we can make this tax abatement without compromising the quality of our education,” Superintendent Ken Wallace said.

All incoming Maine Township High School District 207 freshman and sophomore students must purchase Google Chromebooks as part of a new program that will eventually eliminate the need for physical textbooks. "Instead of filling their backpacks with expensive, heavy, print textbooks, freshman and sophomore students will instead purchase a lightweight Chromebook computer along with electronic books for select courses," District 207 Superintendent Ken Wallace said.

Joe Piko and Hoffman Estates played near-perfect basketball for the final 5:50 of the third quarter allowing the Hawks to cruise past Maine East 58-43 in a nonconference boys basketball game Saturday in Hoffman Estates.The Hawks led 19-18 at the half. Maine East opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run to lead 25-21.

George Verber hated to lose. His intensity as a longtime teacher and coach at Maine South and Maine West was infamous, but the coach finally lost a battle with leukemia he couldn't win. "He was one in a million," said Dave Scott, who took over the basketball program from Verber at Maine West in 1990.

Poms teams across the state took their activity to a new level on Saturday, when they participated in the first round of the state series in competitive dance, sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association. John Huizinga dedicated his life to guiding teens through their difficult high school years and being a friend whom they could rely on for lifelong support. That's how friends and family members remembered Huizinga, 84, a former history teacher and high school guidance counselor at Maine East and Maine South high schools for 31 years, who died Nov. 8 after struggling with Parkinson's disease.

Wednesday is signing day for college basketball players, and Vernon Hills is hosting an event saluting 6-foot-2 center Meri Bennett-Swanson. Her next basketball adventure will take her to Chicago for hoops at DePaul University. There was more good news on opening night of basketball at Vernon Hills. The Cougars, a team that finished second in the state a season ago, scored the game's first 12 points on Monday night and never looked back in routing Maine East 68-31. This game was part of the fourth annual Cougar Classic. Bennett-Swanson led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
