  • Stevenson recovers against Ross, Lyons Nov 1, 2014 12:05 AM
Real time seemed to move in slow motion, and Patrick O’Connell’s eyes got as big as saucers. There was the ball, sitting there on the turf for the taking. Finally, the Stevenson defense had foiled Lyons workhorse running back Leonard Ross. Ross had been running circles around the Patriots on Friday night. But as he made one last push to help his team try to rally from behind, Stevenson linebacker Tyler Vincent laid a hit on him that popped the ball from his hands. O’Connell, a lineman for the Patriots, fell on the ball and all top-seeded Stevenson had to do from there was spend the final minute salting away a 21-17 Class 8A first round win over Lyons.

  • Crump, Warren impress Aug 30, 2014 12:02 AM
If Warren junior running back Darrius Crump was a secret to the rest of the football teams in the state of Illinois, he’s hardly one any longer. On just the fifth play from scrimmage in the season opener for the Blue Devils against visiting Lyons Township on Friday, Crump, who transferred to Warren from Carmel, spun through the Lions defense and ran away for a 60-yard score. That effort was just a small portion of a sensational and career-best 243-yard rushing performance on 27 carries as the host Blue Devils gave new head coach Bryan McNulty his first win, 17-14 over Lyons.
