    Fifty years after knocking off the University of Cincinnati to capture the NCAA championship, the 1963 Loyola University Chicago men's basketball team will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Nov. 24 in Kansas City, Mo. The 1963 Ramblers will be the first team to be enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

    Chris Evans scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Saturday in Kent State’s 70-63 victory over BracketBusters foe Loyola. Kris Brewer added 14 points and was 3 of 3 from the 3-point line for the Golden Flashes (15-12), who also got 13 from Randal Holt and 12 from Darren Goodson. Christian Thomas led the Ramblers (14-14) with a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas, a sophomore, was 11 of 19 from the floor. Loyola opened the game on a 20-9 run capped by Jordan Hicks’ 3-pointer, but Kent State rallied to lead 38-33 at halftime. The Ramblers couldn’t get closer than four points down the rest of the way. The Ramblers still hold a 3-2 lead in the all-time series, which began with a 96-55 victory during the team’s 1962-63 NCAA championship season. Saturday’s game was the first between the schools since 1996.

    Ben Averkamp scored 22 points and Jordan Hicks had a season-high 21, leading Loyola of Chicago to a 76-65 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Averkamp also had 12 rebounds and four assists for the Ramblers (13-8, 3-5 Horizon), who shot 53 percent from the field and outrebounded Milwaukee 35-25. Christian Thomas added 16 points. Jordan Aaron and Austin Arians each had 17 points for the Panthers (5-17, 1-7), who have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight games. Milwaukee is 0-12 on the road this season. Loyola pulled away with 20 straight points midway through the second half, turning a 44-42 deficit into a 62-44 lead with 6:52 remaining. Cully Payne and Devon Turk hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the run and Averkamp had eight points. The Panthers went scoreless for 8:27 during that stretch.

What Payne does know is it hasn’t been a mistake to be right by Lake Michigan and playing basketball for Loyola University. The Schaumburg High School graduate feels right at home on Chicago’s far North Side after a long and circuitous odyssey. “I really believe everything happens for a reason,” Payne said. “I’m lucky to land in Chicago with a great athletic program on the rise and at a great academic school. “My family and grandparents are 35-40 minutes away and it’s a great environment in the city. I couldn’t ask for a better place.”
