A year ago, Becca Smith was on her way to scoring more than 2,000 career points and leading the South Elgin girls basketball team to the program’s first regional championship. Lindsay Schrader had her first full-time coaching gig as an assistant at Longwood University in Richmond, Va. Today, the two former Daily Herald all-area captains are wearing the same colors.

There aren’t many people who can match or exceed Cully Payne’s total of college choices. What Payne does know is it hasn’t been a mistake to be right by Lake Michigan and playing basketball for Loyola University. The Schaumburg High School graduate feels right at home on Chicago’s far North Side after a long and circuitous odyssey. “I really believe everything happens for a reason,” Payne said. “I’m lucky to land in Chicago with a great athletic program on the rise and at a great academic school. “My family and grandparents are 35-40 minutes away and it’s a great environment in the city. I couldn’t ask for a better place.”

Reggie Arceneaux hit the game-winning shot with 1:35 remaining and Wright State slipped by Loyola 62-61 Friday night. Arceneaux finished the night with a career-high 29 points, including the winning 3-point shot at the end of a 15-6 run. He was 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

Schaumburg High School alum Cully Payne scored 24 points to lead Loyola to a 69-61 victory over crosstown rival DePaul on Saturday. Christian Thomas added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Loyola (9-3) in the Ramblers' first victory over DePaul since 1989, and only the second for Loyola on DePaul's home court in 21 meetings.

Loyola and Mississippi State honored their past, recognizing players from their 1963 teams that helped change race relations on the basketball court. Then the current Ramblers used their 3-point shooting to prevail against the Bulldogs. Devon Turk hit 5 of 7 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points as Loyola beat Mississippi State 59-51 Saturday night.

Loyola of Chicago (5-2) led 38-34 at the break, but went on a 20-10 run to begin the second half capped by Devon Turk's 3-pointer with 11:44 to play to give the Ramblers a 58-44 lead and they never looked back.

Ben Averkamp scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Loyola of Chicago pulled away in the second half for a 53-46 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday. Averkamp added 10 rebounds, as did Joe Crisman, for the Ramblers (4-2), and Cully Payne scored 10 points.

Loyola to host 2014 men’s volleyball championship Nov 1, 2012 12:00 AM
For the first time, the NCAA Men's Volleyball Final Four will be held in Chicago when Loyola University plays host to the event, May 1 and May 3 in 2014. NCAA officials made the announcement Thursday morning, and this is the first time Loyola has hosted a NCAA Championship in any sport.
