    Renting a boat for the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race on Sunday, June 2 couldn't be more convenient. It's actually easier than 1-2-3. All you have to do is show up. Register online, and with a click of your mouse, you're good to go. Your boats, paddles and life jackets will be waiting at the start area for you and your group.

    Not long ago — circa the mid-80s — the western boundaries of Aurora and Montgomery were vast swathes of open space, and not much else. "We needed to do more with the land," Fox Valley Park District trustee J.A. Lippold said at the time, "and make more people-use' of it." Jericho Lake Park will soon join the modern movement with a slate of spectacular improvements to be implemented this summer and fall.

    Six years ago, Julio Mercado created the Wolf Pack Junior Running Club, and it's been full-speed ahead ever since. Based at the Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora, the Wolf Pack offers opportunities for children ages 5 to 18 to get involved in the sport of running and enjoy the benefits. "Through running, I wanted to provide local kids with ways to get active and be involved in something healthy," Mercado said.

On Friday, Feb. 1, the doors fly open for the outdoor party season as picnic shelter reservations for the 2013 season will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

    The Polar Express train is welcoming all aboard during the first two weekends in December at Blackberry Farm for its annual Yuletide celebration amid thousands of glittering lights. "There will literally be thousands and thousands of twinkling lights, from the ticket window at the train depot to the trees along the walkways," said facility supervisor Sandy Smith. "It's a holiday spectacle; a true winter wonderland."

    Back in 1989, a memorable event took place in the heart of Aurora as part of a national movement. For several days in May of that year, the Veterans Memorial Moving Wall was stationed at what was then known as Illinois Avenue Island Park. Meant to serve as a traveling tribute to all of our nation's veterans, the wall was visited by more than 150,000 well-wishers.

    The buzz is back as Fox Valley Park District's Bug Fest returns Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Red Oak Nature Center, with insects as the star attraction. The event is free, with no registration required. "Bugs are weird, wild, fascinating and often misunderstood," said Margaret Gazdacka, facility manager at the Red Oak.

On behalf of the Fox Valley Park District, I'd done numerous press announcements over the last 18 months detailing all the renovations and improvements taking place at this beautiful park.     The First Tee of Aurora and Fox River Valley uses the sport of golf to impart life's lessons. Since the mid-1990s, the Fox Valley Park Foundation has partnered with The First Tee to help build a better tomorrow for the next generation. Those efforts will continue June 25 at the 18th annual Golf for Kids Benefit Golf Outing at Orchard Valley Golf Course, Aurora.

     
  • You can still register for Mid-Am Canoe & Kayak Race May 30, 2012 8:25 AM
    On Sunday, June 3, the Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race celebrates its 51st anniversary. It started in 1961. Since then, an estimated 40,000 canoes and kayaks have plied the Fox River and taken out at McCullough Park. This year's race will expand to 20 divisions in all — 11 canoe, eight kayak and one open (noncompetitive) division — including an unlimited division to accommodate all the cutting-edge racing boats.
