  • Bolman speaks volumes for Grayslake North Feb 27, 2015 11:36 PM
Here’s a classic case of hoping word travels really fast. Chances are it will, and it’s largely due to the buzz that Grayslake North senior Brenden Bolman has helped create for the school’s swimming program. The Knights don’t have their own pool, nor do they have a full team. “I can’t wait until word gets back to our A.D. and the school,” Bolman said after qualifying for the finals in two events of the boys swimming and diving state finals held at New Trier High School on Friday. “I wish we had a team, but it’s still great to represent our school and make a name for Grayslake North. The support has been terrific.”

  • Big breakthrough for Vernon Hills Feb 21, 2015 10:19 PM
From hugs to heartbreak, the gamut of emotions were on their usual display Saturday afternoon in the Vernon Hills boys swimming sectional meet. As far as the hugs, there were plenty to go around, especially after Vernon Hills’ junior Brian Rabinowitz had just finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and qualified for next weekend’s state meet at New Trier. “I just missed in the previous three events today, but this definitely makes up for it,” said Rabinowitz, who swam a 53.50. “It feels great to finally end the drought. I was a little worried coming in, but I just trusted my training. I’d love to get a 53 or lower (at state).” The drought Rabinowitz mentioned refers to a four-year absence since Vernon Hills has had a state qualifier in boys swimming.

The top-seeded Gunther won 3-2 when he was awarded the 1-point winner as Carello (20-4) was unable to break away from an unyielding hold. “It’s wasn’t at all pretty, but as I said after my quarterfinal this morning, it’s not about style points down here,” said Gunther (36-1). Assured of a state medal, Gunther next tried to become the fourth state champ in Libertyville history. He’ll meet Matthew Rundell (32-3) of Oak Park-River Forest in the title bout on Day 3 of the state tournament.

Last week, the Mustangs made their first trip to Loyola, to watch another former Mundelein star, Sean O’Brien, a sophomore at Southern Illinois.

It’s easy to dwell on the rich wrestling tradition of Lake County’s perennial powers such as Libertyville and Grant. But there’s certainly room for more in that category, and Grayslake Central’s fast-growing program would love to join it. With competitors like Jon Makey around, the Rams certainly have taken a step in that direction. Coach Mark Stewart and Makey, a four-year veteran of the program, have formed a terrific partnership. And now, after the first day of the wrestling state touranment, Makey has broken new ground with his first state tournament victory. The senior now turns his attention to bigger and better things. Makey (41-3) will meet Chase Vosburgh (42-0) of Mt. Vernon in the 11 a.m. Class 2A quarterfinal session with an opportunity to enhance his chances at a state medal.

Behind point guard Brianna Lewis’ game-high 11 points and a defensive effort that allowed only 7 field goals, the top-seeded Vikings defeated No. 8 Libertyville 45-24. Yates said Gorecki tweaked her ankle at the end of practice Wednesday. She had scored 30 points in the regional semifinal against Zion-Benton.
