  • Softball / Lake County roundup May 27, 2014 10:17 PM
    Softball Grayslake Central vs. Guerin susp.: At Grayslake Central, the Class 3A regional semifinal was suspended going into the top of the fourth with Grayslake Central leading 10-0. The game will be resumed at 4 p.m. today. Afterward, Regina Domincan will play Fenton. Warren vs. Loyola, susp.: At Loyola, the Class 4A regional semifinal started but was stopped in the top of the first due to lightning. After an hour and a half, the coaches agreed to suspend the game. The game will resume at 4:30 p.m. today at Loyola Academy’s Munz Campus in Glenview. The Mundelein vs Waukegan game will start at 6:30 p.m., after the completion of Loyola vs. Warren. Libertyville vs. Hersey, susp.: At Carmel, the Class 4A regional semifinal was suspended after 3 innings. Grayslake North vs. Round Lake, ppd.: At Grayslake North, the Class 4A regional play-in was called for the second day ib a row. No pitch was thrown in the game, which will be played at 4 p.m. today.

    Max Spiglanin and Mike Heinz hammered 10 and 9 kills, respectively, as Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team downed Libertyville 25-19, 25-16 in regional semifinal play at Carmel Catholic on Tuesday night.

     
  • Libertyville’s Skoug nets Gatorade honor May 27, 2014 3:15 PM
    The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, has announced that Evan Skoug of Libertyville has been chosen Gatorade Illinois Baseball Player of the Year. Skoug is the third Gatorade Illinois Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Libertyville High School.

     
  • Baseball / Lake County roundup May 24, 2014 10:57 PM
    Junior Justin Blasinski stole the show on senior day for Lakes’ baseball team. Blasinski provided the the game-winning RBI on a bases-loaded single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Eagles defeated visiting Marian Central 4-3 Saturday.

     
  • VanDixhorn makes his case; Stevenson wins sectional May 24, 2014 6:53 PM
    Ben VanDixhorn made his statement to the boys tennis state tournament committee for a highly sought-after 3-4 seed with a three-set victory over teammate Stefano Tsorotiotis to capture the singles crown in Saturday’s Stevenson sectional, held at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Stevenson won the team trophy, finishing ahead of Libertyville 21-14n Next were Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington (10), with Vernon Hills rounding out the top four with 7 points.

     
  • Life in the fast lane: Warren’s Ellis third in 400 May 24, 2014 8:22 PM
    Warren junior Brittny Ellis usually has no troubles switching gears, but the Blue Devils junior couldn’t quite get the acceleration she would have liked in the 400-meter final of the Class 3A girls track and field state meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium on Saturday. Ellis, the two-time defending 400 champion, entered the final turn neck-and-neck with Evanston senior Parker English and North Lawndale senior Briyahna DesRosiers. But Ellis couldn’t match the closing speed of English or DesRosiers. English finished first in a blistering 53.88, nipping DesRosiers (53.92) and followed by Ellis (54.30).

    Kaitlyn Wold’s breakout softball season got even better Friday. The senior belted a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh to score Caityln Moran from first base and give Grant a 5-4, walk-off win over Carmel in nonconference action.

     
  • Baseball / Lake County roundup May 23, 2014 11:21 PM
    Baseball Mundelein 4, Vernon Hills 1: Luke Adams and Reese Dolan doubled for the Mustangs. Mundelein improved to 31-2, while Vernon Hills fell to 21-11. Libertyville 3, Deerfield 1: Matt Reed and Riley Lees had doubles for the newly crowed North Suburban Conference champs, and Adam Formento earned the win. Libertyville improved to 28-5. Lakes 4, Waukegan 3: Joe Sisk (RBI, walk) and Cody Brumm both went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored for the Eagles. Zach Fuller pitched 5 innings for Lakes (18-12) and picked up the win, while Cody Nuxoll tossed 2 innings for the save. Dundee-Crown 5, Grayslake North 4: The Knights got doubles from Dylan Foster and Ryan Gross in their Fox Valley Conference finale. Grayslake North fell to 13-19 and 7-11.

     
  • Big-goal Bailey does it again for Stevenson May 23, 2014 10:34 PM
    Erin Bailey has a knack for scoring game-winning goals in the regional final. She did it a couple of years ago as a sophomore and has done it again as a senior, leading the Patriots to a regional championship on Friday night. Bailey hit the game-winner in the second overtime that carried No. 14 seed Stevenson past No. 12 Libertyville 1-0 in 2OT’s in the Class 3A regional final in Lincolnshire. Stevenson (7-10-4) will meet top-seeded Buffalo Grove (22-1-3) in the Libertyville sectional semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Buffalo Grove won its own regional final over Palatine 1-0.

     
  • Drama aplenty through Day 1 of Stevenson sectional May 23, 2014 10:26 PM
    It was a nearly perfect day for Stevenson tennis Friday afternoon, but the story of the day was the success of the Vernon Hills doubles team of David Dobrik/Nikita Lunkov. In dramatic fashion and on their home courts, the duo rode the wave of momentum right into next weekend’s state tournament. The sectional host Patriots easily advanced their two doubles teams plus sophomore Benjamin Bush in singles, while the Libertyville duo of Ben VanDixhorn and Stefano Tsorotiotis left little doubt as to their status at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. Junior Kevin Hunt of Carmel will make his first appearance at state after a hard-fought straight-set victory over Brian Weisberg of Stevenson, while Barrington’s No. 1 team of Ishaan Jaglin-Scott Apmann (9-5) will join Hunt for their maiden voyage to the big show.

     
  • Back in form, Miller leads Barrington at Palatine May 23, 2014 12:50 AM
    One month ago, the outlook for Barrington junior Scotty Miller was anything but bright. Having suffered through walking pneumonia and losing weight from his already slight frame, Miller looked like anything but the standout sprinter who medaled twice at the Class 3A track and field meet a year ago. Fast forward to the Class 3A Palatine Sectional and any signs of a weakened or broken down Miller were nowhere to be found. Miller captured state-qualifying berths in three events for the first time as he helped lead the Broncos to the overall team title on Thursday.

     
  • Libertyville squeezes out a win over Grant May 22, 2014 10:43 PM
    Libertyville waited, and waited, and waited for its high-fives and conference trophy. Grant is still waiting. Being patient and disciplined, the Libertyville baseball team saved its best tricks for last and used some clutch bunting to scratch out a 4-3 eight-inning victory over host Grant on Thursday afternoon in the North Suburban Conference championship game.

     
  • Softball / Lake County roundup May 22, 2014 11:19 PM
    Libertyville senior softball pitcher Carlie Haraden celebrated senior day in style. Haraden threw a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated visiting Round Lake 10-0 Thursday. Haraden struck out 10 and walked one, while also helping herself at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort that included a double.

     
  • Baseball / Lake County roundup May 20, 2014 11:38 PM
    Libertyville’s baseball team celebrated more than the North Suburban Lake Division championship Tuesday. Anthony Mack fired a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated host Zion-Benton 5-0. Libertyville (26-5) finished 11-1 in the NSC Lake, one game ahead of Mundelein. The Wildcats will play Grant at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the conference championship in Fox Lake.

     
  • Lake Zurich clinches NSC title game berth May 20, 2014 11:09 PM
    Amanda Guercio and Mallory Parsons homered, and Lake Zurich’s softball team clinched a berth in Thursday’s North Suburban Conference championship game by beating visiting Mundelein 8-3 Tuesday.

  • Stevenson shows its mettle in state finals May 17, 2014 11:03 PM
    After bringing home the second-place trophy from the Elite Eight meet the previous day, Stevenson put the finishing touches on a great weekend Saturday night at the 63rd boys gymnastics state meet at Hinsdale Central. With a great preliminary round on Saturday afternoon, Stevenson was able to get four gymnasts into the individual state finals, including three top-five medal winners.
