    Birthdays are meant to be celebrated, and Libertyville coach Andy Bitta certainly enjoyed this one. During his tenure as a coach covering some 29 years, he got to celebrate a victory on his birthday for only the second time Monday night. The Wildcats gift-wrapped a 4-2 victory over rival Stevenson in a North Suburban Lake match in Lincolnshire.

    Libertyville quarterback Riley Lees has shown that he can score with his arm and his legs, and Friday night was no different as he combined for 305 total yards. His performance led the host Wildcats to a 37-7 victory over Lake Forest Academy in a nonconference football game.

    Girls volleyball Carmel d. Lakes: Grace Schofield slammed 8 kills, as the Corsairs won 25-19, 25-21 in nonconference action. Carmel (3-0) also received strong contributions from Grace Butler (6 kills, 11 assists, 7 digs), Cate Halverson (3 kills, 3 blocks), Sierra Kepski (12 digs), Taylor Luhr (4 kills), Morgan Meade (4 kills, 14 assists, 7 digs) and Elizabeth Tworek (3 aces, 5 digs). Carmel opened up a 20-8 lead in the opening set, but Lakes wouldn’t go down without a fight and made it close. The Eagles’ momentum carried over into the second set and, for the first time this season, Carmel found itself trailing an opponent. “Lakes is a solid team and played some good defense and caused us some problems,” Corsairs coach David Pazely said. “The girls kept their heads and battled back to get the win. Our middles played well tonight and contributed effectively to the offense. Our setters found a good balance to our attack and we were able to get everyone involved.” Katie Billetdeaux had 5 kills and 3 blocks for Lakes. McKenna Lahr had 4 kills and 3 blocks, and Megan Behrendt totaled 3 kills, 3 aces and 5 digs. “We enjoyed playing a competitive match and look forward to seeing Carmel in the Grayslake Central Ram Slam tournament over the weekend,” Lakes coach Kate Cheek said. Libertyville d. Evanston: The Wildcats won 25-14, 25-16 to improve to 7-1, as Alex Basler had 8 kills, while Hannah Zerwas added seven. Erin Dunleavy had 5 kills, while Liz Apgar dished out 12 assists. Morgan O’Brien contributed 14 digs and 3 aces. Glenbrook South d. Stevenson: Jori Radtke’s 8 kills weren’t enough for the Patriots, who fell 25-20, 26-28, 25-16. Isabella Milejczyk added 6 kills for Stevenson (4-3).

    Myra Peterson shot a 41, Surya Vijayasankar added a 42, and Stevenson’s girls golf team edged Vernon Hills at Vernon Hills Golf Course on Thursday. Stevenson’s 177 was three strokes better than Vernon Hills’ total. Vernon Hills’ Faith Jung was the medalist with a 40. Libertyville d. Deerfield: At Deerfield Golf Club, Maggie Piazzi earned medalist honors for the second day in a row, as her 40 led the Wildcats (165), whose 10-stroke win hiked their record to 7-0. Libertyville, which won for the third time in as many days, also counted Jessica Lovinger’s 41 and 42s from Simone Mikaelian and Megan Sturonas. “All six played well,” said Wildcats coach Greg Petersen, also noting the play of Reilly Burnetti (44) and Sara Keefe (46). “They were focused on finishing.” Mundelein d. Highland Park: At Countryside, the Mustangs (189) got a win over the Giants (202). Mundelein’s Megan Wiese and Jennifer Dimitriou shared medalist honors with 45s. Johnsburg d. Grant: Kylie Diana shot a 49 for the Bulldogs in their 195-223 loss.

    Libertyville’s boys soccer team won its third straight game with a 1-0 win over Glenbrook South in nonconference action in Glenview on Thursday. Sam Kratzer scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Trey Touhey in the 61st minute. Sam Muchmore earned his second straight clean sheet with 3 saves. Vernon Hills 2, St. Catherines 1: At Carthage College, Chris White scored both goals for the Cougars (4-3), and Brennan Reback recorded the win in net with 5 saves. Deerfield 1, Stevenson 0: The Patriots (2-2-1) surrendered the game’s only goal in the second half. Wauconda 1, Crystal Lake Central 0: Hector Sanchez scored off an assist from Eric Berg in the opening half for the Bulldogs (3-3), who will play in the championship game of their own tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday against Marian Central. Shane Purcell earned the shutout with a 9-save effort. Lakes 2, Maine East 1: The Eagles’ Zach Espinosa scored on a penalty kick and assisted on Dave Milostan’s goal. Jack Monson made 10 saves in goal for Lakes (1-3-1), which captured its first win of the season. Lake Forest 2, Niles West 0: Parker Marsh and Keegan Filkin scored for the Scouts, with Matthew Mick and Paul Passalino picking up assists. Jan Roessler notched the shutout for Lake Forest (3-3).

    There were a lot of young runners making some pretty huge contributions to their girls cross country teams Wednesday afternoon at the Lake County/Art Campbell Invitational. Led by freshman teammates Melissa Manetsch (fifth) and Avryl Johnson (eighth) Libertyville ran to the championship of the 18-team meet on the 3-mile Lakewood Forest Preserve course 82-91 over runner-up squad Lake Forest. Lakes junior Kortney Schardt was the individual champion in 18:21 as she pulled away from Vernon Hills junior Vivian Overbeck down the final stretch to win by seven seconds.

    Maggie Piazzi led a balanced attack, and Libertyville’s girls golf team stayed undefeated Wednesday. Piazzi, a returning junior playing in the No. 4 spot, earned medalist honors with a 41 at Bittersweet Golf Club in leading the Wildcats to a 167 and convincing win over host Warren (198).

    The heat was on Wednesday afternoon for area boys cross country runners as 14 teams lined up for the Lake County/Art Campbell Invitational at Lakewood Forest Preserve. When all was said and done, Stevenson senior Sam Oh rolled to first place in 15:29.2, helping the Patriots finish fifth as a team. Barrington held off Grayslake Central 64-76 for top team honors under some pretty balmy running conditions on the 3-mile course while Highland Park outdistanced Mundelein by a narrow 106-109 margin for third place.
