Solid performances from regional champions Christian Kantzler (Grant), Joey Gunther (Libertyville) and Tyler Harrington (Stevenson) highlighted the first day of action for the North Suburban Conference teams in action at the Class 3A Barrington wrestling sectional. All three roared through the competition to advance into Saturday’s semifinals, where each is now one victory away from earning a trip to Champaign and the state finals next weekend.

  • Falish, Chambers team up for Warren Feb 13, 2015 10:28 PM
The backcourt combination of Jake Falish and Maurice Chambers is quickly becoming a tandem worth watching for the Warren Blue Devils. Falish has filled it up from behind the arc this season, and he did so again Friday night in a road contest for the Devils at Libertyville. But the emergence of Chambers has been a big reason why the Devils are playing some of their best boys basketball of the season to this point. Falish hit seven 3s on his way to a game-best 25 points, and Chambers rattled home a pair of long ones and finished with 19 to lift Warren to its fourth straight win and second of the season over Libertyville 57-49.

  • Jacobs passes the test at Bradley Center Feb 7, 2015 11:24 PM
Remember that scene in Risky Business when Tom Cruise’s character dreams he arrives late for the big exam with only minutes left to take the test? Saturday was like that in reverse for Jacobs boys basketball team but with a better outcome. Jacobs star guard Chrishawn Orange and sixth man Mike Canady were among three Golden Eagles who missed the first half of Saturday’s nonconference game against Libertyville at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee due to ACT testing at separate locations back in McHenry County. Though their teammates certainly would have rather had Orange and Canady available from the start, the Golden Eagles met their planned absence with a general shrug. Jacobs (17-5) sank 11 3-pointers, 6 of them in the first half, to cruise to a 62-34 nonconference win.

  • Novak, Warren savoring this sectional trip Feb 7, 2015 10:42 PM
Rolling right along, there’s Warren coach Rich Novak. He’s been coaching in the Blue Devils girls bowling program for the last 20 years, the last 10 as head coach. But all rolls must end eventually, which means Novak will especially enjoy this season and one last trip to the sectional round. Novak’s squad was one of four to advanced from the Warren regional at Bertrand Lanes on Saturday. “Getting to the sectional was one of our goals,” Novak said. “They all stayed together and worked together through everything.” Novak will retire after this school year. He’s looking forward to a bright future, both for the Warren program and himself. “Retiring is hard to do,” he said, “but I know it’s time to get younger people out here — and I want to do some traveling.”

Mia Polisky added 13 points and 4 assists for the Cougars (20-6), who completed play in the North Suburban Prairie Division with a 9-3 record. Katie Brettmann contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Haley Lieberman had 7 points and 5 assists. Becky Bahlmann also had 8 points.

  • Mansfield, Libertyville leg out a victory Feb 6, 2015 11:29 PM
The collision of knees, which caused Libertyville’s Jake Mansfield to wince and hobble off Mundelein’s basketball court, wasn’t funny. Never mind that the hit was to a “funny bone” area. “I was going for a loose ball and the top of the (Mundelein) kid’s knee hit the soft tissue of my knee — like the funny bone on your elbow,” Mansfield said. “It stings when that happens.” Mansfield took a seat at the end of the bench, and with Libertyville comfortably ahead early in the third quarter, there was no need for his return. Libertyville’s starters could have some fun cheering on their backups, as the Wildcats cruised to an 86-52 win in North Suburban Lake Division boys basketball action Friday night.

  • Warren’s Falish gets it right for senior year — and beyond Feb 5, 2015 4:25 PM
Warren guard Jake Falish was tortured last year when he decided not to play basketball so that he could spend more time working on baseball. He regretted his decision right away and struggled to watch his teammates play on without him last winter. He returned to the hardwood this season with modest expectations and instead has blown the roof off at Warren. He's the team's leading scorer (20 ppg) and is one of the top 3-point shooters in the area. Oh yeah, and he's going to play sports (yes, plural) in college, where he won't be forced to choose between baseball and basketball.

  • Commanding performance from young Carmel Feb 4, 2015 11:09 PM
Carmel Catholic’s girls gymnastics team is growing up quickly. Despite their youth, the Corsairs won their 13th regional championship in a row Wednesday night, as they posted a 142.625 at Stevenson. The host Patriots finished second with a 134.425, followed by Libertyville (128.475) and Vernon Hills (107.45). Stevenson’s Elizabeth Shank won the all-around with 37.4, while Lake Zurich had its first gymnast competing in more than a decade, and freshman Emily McGuckin acquitted herself well. Carmel freshman Kelly Gustafson earned medals with a third on vault (9.15) and fourth on the floor (9.125). She also could qualify at-large in other events.
