    Stevenson’s stars in waiting flashed their potential, and Libertyville’s posts continued to produce at double-double efficiency. And yet, at game’s end, a familiar storyline played out. Taylor Buford, Sofia Way and Ashley Richardson combined for 52 points, as Stevenson pulled away from visiting Libertyville 73-46 in a North Suburban Lake Division girls basketball opener that was closer than the final score indicated Tuesday night. “We got big production out of the Big Three — Ashley, Sofia and Taylor,” said Tom Dineen, whose Patriots improved to 6-0, as Buford scored 22 points, Way added 17 and 7 rebounds and Richardson sank three 3-pointers as part of her 13-point effort. “You don’t ever want to take that for granted. It’s sure nice to have those three.”

    Libertyville’s boys basketball team cruised to a 20-4 first-quarter lead, but Chicago King made it a game by outscoring their opponents 14-11 in the second quarter. The Wildcats still led 31-18 at half-time and hung on to win 57-49 in the final round of the 2014 Thanksgiving Tournament held at Maine West in Des Plaines. Maine South topped Maine West on Saturday to finish 4-0 and win the tournament.

    There were a lot of positives for Lake County teams and individuals Saturday at the 24th Annual Moore/Prettyman Wrestling Invitational in Barrington. Lyons Township rolled to the championship of the powerful 25-team meet with 208.5 points with Lincoln-Way Central (185) in second as the Lions showed great depth up and down their lineup. The battle for third place was a close one, as Yorkville (159 points) held off fourth-place Prospect (157.5) and fifth-place Grant (153.5). Grant’s effort was led by 138-pound senior Cristian Coronado (5-0), who posted an 11-6 decision over Plainfield Central’s Clayton Ledbetter for the championship.

    The wrestling teams from Grant and Prospect were within striking distance of tourney-leading Yorkville as the first day of the 24th Moore-Prettyman Invitational came to an Friday night in Barrington. The North Suburban Conference favorite Bulldogs are currently sitting 1 point ahead of Prospect (92.5-91.50) in fourth place — 17.5 points behind Yorkville (110.00) and also trailing Lyons Township (108) and Lincoln-Way Central (94). The action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with third-round consolation matches, followed by semifinals on the Barrington Fieldhouse floor.

    Just a day after the Thanksgiving holiday, Libertyville’s boys basketball team had to get rid of that leftover sensation. No, not so much the one from all the feasting Thursday, but rather that lingering feeling following a loss to Maine South on Wednesday night. Coach Scott Bogumil decided to get his boys into the gym Friday morning for a shootaround. “Coming off Thanksgiving, it’s always a little tough to get them going,” Bogumil said. “(Maine South) was a tough game and we were a little down from that. We did shoot around for about an hour, to get the turkey out of them. I think it definitely helped and we got a sweat going.” It turned out that Laibertyville didn’t break much of a sweat in a 77-36 victory over Alcott at the Maine West Tournament in Des Plaines on Friday afternoon.

After four false starts in her heat of the 200-yard freestyle Friday due to malfunctioning equipment for the starter, Falconer shook off the distraction and wound up victorious with a time of 1:48.83. That was good enough for the top spot heading into Saturday’s finale of the state swimming and diving finals at Evanston, which begins at noon.

    Had Libertyville’s football players been told prior to the postseason they would win 3 playoff games before bowing out with a 9-4 record, they probably would have been OK with that scenario. Heck, most teams statewide would be OK with making a state semifinal appearance. Not Cary-Grove. Not this year.
