  • Top-seeded Stevenson gears up for playoffs Oct 25, 2014 11:39 PM
There have been undefeated football seasons at Stevenson in the past. There have also been too many conference titles to count and a 26-year consecutive playoff streak that is among the best in the state. But one item is missing from Stevenson’s resume, and it’s a pretty big one at that: a state championship. With one of their best teams in program history, the Patriots are hoping to finally add that elusive piece of hardware to their trophy case, and on Saturday night they learned the path they’ll have to take to do so. The IHSA announced the 256 teams across eight classes that make up its state playoff field. At 9-0, Stevenson was the top-ranked team in Class 8A and will face No. 16 Lyons (5-4) in Lincolnshire.

We were just kicking it. We were very lucky. I thought our defense played very well, and they play well every game. But we have to score more.” The Wildcats (14-3) will next take on No. 3 Fremd in the Palatine sectional semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mundelein finished 11-7-3.

  • Perfect finish for Stevenson Oct 25, 2014 12:14 AM
In what might have been a preview of next season, Jack Sorenson looked awfully comfortable throwing the ball rather than receiving it. Stevenson’s sure-handed junior receiver morphed into a halfback and then into a quarterback on the very first play from scrimmage against Libertyville on Friday night. Quarterback Willie Bourbon flipped the ball back to Sorenson in the backfield and Sorenson, assumed to be the heir apparent to Bourbon next year, aired out a 58-yard halfback option touchdown pass to a wide-open Cameron Green. “He put it right where it needed to be,” Green said of Sorenson. Like Sorenson’s job change, the pretty touchdown was also a hint of things to come as Stevenson scored early and often in a 34-14 win over Libertyville that completed a 9-0 perfect regular season.
