  • Libertyville finds winning spirit Dec 26, 2014 9:36 PM
Possibly too much Christmas Day merriment was the reasoning behind Libertyville’s sluggish start in third-round action against Grant in the Mundelein Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon. “Maybe it was eggnog, but definitely too many cookies,” said Wildcats senior center Becky Deichl, who poured in a game-high 15 points to accompany 10 boards. “We had trouble hitting our shots (in the first half). But in the second half we got ourselves into better position to make easier shots. Everyone played hard tonight.” Whatever the reason, Libertyville shook it off in that second half and eventually produced a 41-29 victory over the pesky Bulldogs.

  • Conant surges past Libertyville Dec 23, 2014 7:18 PM
On paper, this looked like a good one. Twice-beaten in 9 games came the Conant Cougars. With 10 wins already were the Libertyville Wildcats. But late in the second quarter, the scoreboard at the Mundelein High School Holiday Classic read: Conant 23, Libertyville 4.How could that be? And just as the game looked to be over but for the shouting, the Wildcats went on a 15-0 run. And just like that it was clearly anyone’s game. Both clubs had runaway victories on Monday night, but now only Conant stands unbeaten in the tournament. The Cougars (8-2) absorbed Libertyville’s comeback blow on Tuesday night and posted a decisive 45-31 win.

  • Lake Park stands tall against Libertyville Dec 23, 2014 7:41 PM
Lake Park had no fear going into the land of the giants Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 37th annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic. The Lancers do not have a starter over 6-foot-2. But Lake Park still managed to end up nearly eye to eye with a much taller Libertyville team, whose front line features a 6-foot-10 center and a pair of 6-6 forwards, and came away with an impressive 55-40 victory.

  • Borcia, Mansfield come up big for Libertyville Dec 22, 2014 7:20 PM

  • Libertyville stands tall against Grayslake North Dec 22, 2014 8:32 PM
Normally the saying is, speed kills. Well, in the case of the Libertyville varsity girls basketball team, it’s the height factor that’s going wreak havoc with plenty of opponents this season. Case in point was on Monday morning when the Wildcats used that size advantage to power past Grayslake North 50-27 in the opening round of the Mundelein Holiday tournament.

  • Libertyville’s Harrington takes the long view at Lake County meet Dec 20, 2014 9:25 PM
Libertyville standout swimmer Matt Harrington summed it up best. “The Lake County Invite is always a great training meet and it’s still early in the season so it also serves as kind of an experiment to see where you stand,” the Princeton-bound senior said after winning the 500 freestyle, finishing second in the 200 freestyle and taking legs on the second-place 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “I’m really working on getting mentally stronger. I do well and get off to good starts but then I tend to fall off at the end. Today I swam almost 900 yards. That’s great for getting more familiar with the pain that goes along with getting stronger. Plus, by swimming the longer events it helps me finish stronger in the shorter events.” Incidentally, Harrington’s times in the 200 (1:41.85) and 500 freestyle (4:43.89) were both school records, which made first-year coach Mike Cunningham even more ecstatic.

  • Libertyville passes strategic test with Mundelein Dec 16, 2014 11:10 PM
During a suddenly frenzied fourth quarter, Mundelein girls basketball coach Brian Evans turned to one of his assistant coaches. His mood had changed. “He was subbing in and out. I was subbing in and out,” Evans said excitedly, referring to Libertyville coach Greg Pedersen said. “I said, ‘This is fun.’ ” Evans hates to lose, mind you, and his Mustangs were losing a game they had never led — and they lost. Libertyville saw a 19-point second-half lead whittled to three in the final minute, before hanging on for a 53-47 win in a North Suburban Lake Division thriller Tuesday night.

  • Record goes to Boudreaux as Libertyville falls short Dec 13, 2014 10:37 PM
Evan Boudreaux had a certain mindset going into Friday night’s game, knowing he needed 21 points to set a Lake Forest boys basketball career scoring record. What he didn’t know was how much opposition there would be to his plan. The Dartmouth-bound 6-foot-8 big man dealt with missed shots, numerous blocks by Libertyville’s Joe Borcia, Ben Kimpler and Peter Feeley, and even committed some turnovers. On top of all that, Boudreaux injured his left ankle by stepping on a foot in the fourth quarter while coming down with a rebound. At the time, he was 7 points short of 21. But after two minutes off the court for some tape to his left ankle, Boudreaux returned to score precisely the points he needed. He got the final one from the free throw line with just under 11 seconds left as Lake Forest held off host Libertyville 39-33 in a North Suburban Lake Division battle.

  • Stevenson powers past Libertyville Dec 10, 2014 11:00 PM
It was a game that began with a 4-point play. And maybe another early play told the tale. Unbeaten Stevenson actually missed a dunk, and the ball went all the way to the Libertyville bench, where a disgruntled Scott Bogumil (Libertyville’s coach) caught the basketball. The runaway Pats spurted to a 45-18 lead late in the second half. From that point on, the visitors from Libertyville battled back. No, it wasn’t enough as Stevenson (6-0, 2-0) prevailed 78-55 in North Suburban Lake play Wednesday.

  • Libertyville zones out Lake Zurich Dec 9, 2014 10:54 PM
Lake Zurich was not winning this battle. Frankie Nasca vs. Libertyville’s bleachers? Nasca stands 5 feet 3. Libertyville’s bleachers are constructed of heavy lumber. Nasca chased a loose ball during Tuesday night’s North Suburban Lake Division game and wiped out, hard. Both of her forehead and hip crashed into the bleachers. The spunky junior guard lay crumpled in the front row, face down, for several minutes, as an entire gym got quiet. “I’ve done that before — but not like on benches, more like on chairs,” Libertyville sophomore guard Riley Weis said. “(Chairs) move back. Benches don’t.” Libertyville’s defense yielded little too. The Wildcats’ newly installed 2-3 zone frustrated the visiting Bears, and center Becky Deichl’s 15 points and 6 rebounds led the way in a 39-22 win. Weis added 10 points, including the game’s only two 3-pointers.
