  • Big win for Stevenson Dec 2, 2014 11:08 PM
Stevenson’s stars in waiting flashed their potential, and Libertyville’s posts continued to produce at double-double efficiency. And yet, at game’s end, a familiar storyline played out. Taylor Buford, Sofia Way and Ashley Richardson combined for 52 points, as Stevenson pulled away from visiting Libertyville 73-46 in a North Suburban Lake Division girls basketball opener that was closer than the final score indicated Tuesday night. “We got big production out of the Big Three — Ashley, Sofia and Taylor,” said Tom Dineen, whose Patriots improved to 6-0, as Buford scored 22 points, Way added 17 and 7 rebounds and Richardson sank three 3-pointers as part of her 13-point effort. “You don’t ever want to take that for granted. It’s sure nice to have those three.”

Grant’s effort was led by 138-pound senior Cristian Coronado (5-0), who posted an 11-6 decision over Plainfield Central’s Clayton Ledbetter for the championship.

  • Hungry for victory, Libertyville handles Alcott Nov 28, 2014 6:35 PM
Just a day after the Thanksgiving holiday, Libertyville’s boys basketball team had to get rid of that leftover sensation. No, not so much the one from all the feasting Thursday, but rather that lingering feeling following a loss to Maine South on Wednesday night. Coach Scott Bogumil decided to get his boys into the gym Friday morning for a shootaround. “Coming off Thanksgiving, it’s always a little tough to get them going,” Bogumil said. “(Maine South) was a tough game and we were a little down from that. We did shoot around for about an hour, to get the turkey out of them. I think it definitely helped and we got a sweat going.” It turned out that Laibertyville didn’t break much of a sweat in a 77-36 victory over Alcott at the Maine West Tournament in Des Plaines on Friday afternoon.

  • True to form, Mundelein’s Falconer returns to finals Nov 22, 2014 1:01 AM
False starts can be a little unnerving. Unless you’re Mundelein senior Erin Falconer. After four false starts in her heat of the 200-yard freestyle Friday due to malfunctioning equipment for the starter, Falconer shook off the distraction and wound up victorious with a time of 1:48.83. That was good enough for the top spot heading into Saturday’s finale of the state swimming and diving finals at Evanston, which begins at noon.

  • Cary-Grove makes it clear — they aren’t done yet Nov 24, 2014 5:55 AM
Had Libertyville’s football players been told prior to the postseason they would win 3 playoff games before bowing out with a 9-4 record, they probably would have been OK with that scenario.
