    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

    Closing out a playoff game under pressure is a scenario kid pitchers have acted out in baseball pickup games for generations. South Elgin senior pitcher Eric Stazy experienced the real deal in his team's 7-5 victory over host Larkin in a Class 4A regional semifinal Wednesday.

    Part of Nicole LaBeck's mind may have been elsewhere Monday but the Hoffman Estates junior leadoff hitter made sure her bat was all there. LaBeck's 2-run double in the bottom of the third inning, and the clutch pitching of freshman Charlotte Allan helped the Hawks to a 4-0 win over Larkin in the play-in game of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates softball regional. No. 16 seed Hoffman (6-24) will face top-seeded Conant at 4:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

    Chris Edwards was going to make sure the Elgin baseball team was not getting swept by crosstown rival Larkin. Edwards had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs in a 7-run third inning Thursday night to help the Maroons to an 8-0 victory over the Royals at Trout Park in the final game of the three-game Upstate Eight River series. "This the biggest series of the year," Edwards said. "We knew we had to come back. We couldn't let them take us three games."

Tyler Kalusa hit a potential game-ending double play ground play toward short with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. But the ball hit the lip of the infield grass and hopped over Elgin shortstop Andrew Higdons head bringing in a pair of runs for a walkoff 4-3 victory on Elgins west side.

  • Larkin storms back to upend Elgin May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
    When lightning struck near Trout Park in Elgin Shazam! Larkin pitcher Kyle Newquist went from ordinary to extraordinary and secured a 6-5 comeback victory over rival Elgin Tuesday night. Newquist looked quite human as the opener of the 3-game series began. In the first three innings he allowed 5 runs on 3 hits, walked 5 and a hit a batter. Elgins Kiko Mari made him pay with a 3-run double that staked the Maroons to a 5-run lead after an inning. The Royals drew within 5-4 on Niko Morados third-inning grand slam, but the contest was then halted after three innings for an hour due to nearby lightning strikes.

    Lauren Grady is trying to make up for lost time. Missing 10 games due to an hamstring injury, Gradys injury seems to be fully healed. Scoring 3 goals, Grady led top-seeded Jacobs to a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Larkin in semifinal action in the Class 3A Jacobs regional Tuesday in Algonquin.

  •  Jillian Thomas is a finalist in the Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door contest, sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Thomas became a vegetarian five years ago after watching videos about animal cruelty. She no longer buys products from companies that employ animal testing. Voting in the contest is open through Monday, May 14.

    Elgin native makes top 10 in sexiest vegetarian contest May 11, 2012 12:00 AM
    After an evening of watching animal abuse videos in her college apartment and looking at pictures of animal testing, Jillian Thomas was shaken and feeling guilty about her own contribution to the animal suffering. Thomas became a vegetarian the next morning and hasn't changed her mind in five years. The 23-year-old Elgin woman is a finalist in PETA's annual Sexiest Vegetarian Next Door contest.

    The longest-standing Upstate Eight Conference boys track record fell Thursday. St. Charles East senior Jake Mazanke broke the 800-meter run record that lasted 47 years by finishing in 1:53.47 to win the event at the UEC River Division meet at Burgess Field in Geneva.

    Larkin softball coach Anne Vogt, who played in many Elgin-Larkin games herself, said it best when she declared, This is what Elgin-Larkin softball is all about. And Vogts Royals lost the game. But Larkin, in the throes of a tough 3-win season, gained a measure of respect from its crosstown rival Elgin Thursday night after one swing of Hannah Perrrymans bat gave the Maroons a dramatic 1-0 win over the Royals in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action under the lights at Judson University.
