    Larkin High School will host the 17th annual Connie-A-Thon fundraiser this Saturday. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. Proceeds benefit people within the Larkin community who have outstanding medical debt.

  • Elgin student charged with videotaping others in bathroom May 8, 2014 6:15 PM
    An 18-year-old Elgin student was charged with unlawfully videotaping two students in a high school bathroom, authorities said. Steffon L. Pruitt appeared Thursday in bond court and was charged with one count of unlawful recording of a person under 18 in a restroom, a Class 3 felony, Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said.

     
  • St. Charles East runs away with UEC May 8, 2014 11:42 PM
    St. Charles East sophomore Keely Flanigan summed up the Saints’ winning approach to Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference girls track meet at Geneva, the last primer before next week’s all-important sectional meets. “Our goal was just to do the best we can and improve ourselves,” said Flanigan, who ran the second leg of St. Charles East’s winning 1,600-meter relay. “And if we happen to win, that’s good, too.” It went pretty good for the Saints, who happened to win it all, as it turned out. In a meet that decided an overall champion as well as River and Valley Division champions, St. Charles East was the clear-cut winner. The Saints amassed 142 team points to run away with the overall and River Division titles.

    Larkin’s Jack McCracken did exactly what you would expect an ace pitcher to do on Wednesday when his team is trying to get back on the winning track. The senior right-hander tossed a 4 hit complete game gem as the Royals snapped a 2 game slide with a 2-1 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win over Geneva.

  • Elgin takes Game 3 from Larkin May 6, 2014 6:39 AM
    Neither a doubleheader loss on Saturday nor a slow start on Monday was going to deter Elgin from salvaging the final game of a 3-game series against crosstown rival Larkin. The Maroons rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 5-3 win at Trout Park on Monday in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest. After surrendering 3 runs in the first inning, Elgin starter Clay White (3-1) settled down to blank the Royals the rest of the way to pick up the win.

     
  • Larkin names Teonic new football coach May 5, 2014 9:14 PM
    The interview committee tasked with hiring Larkin’s seventh football coach had a strong, positive feeling about former Hersey and Harper coach Dragan Teonic early in the process. “He was able to communicate as a leader and detail the structure of his program within the first interview,” Larkin athletic director Mark Ribbens said. “After the first interview there were comments like, ‘Don’t interview anybody else. He’s our guy.’ ” Teonic, 34, was eventually chosen from a crop of 44 candidates to lead the Larkin football program. The Elgin school made his hiring official Monday via news release.

  • Larkin notches DH sweep of rival Elgin May 3, 2014 9:18 PM
    The Larkin baseball team gave rival Elgin a taste of year-old medicine Saturday. Last season, Elgin mounted a 6-run rally late in Game 2 to split the annual Trout Park doubleheader and win the series 2-1. Back at Trout on Saturday for the first 2 games of this year’s 3-game set, Larkin capitalized on a pair of Elgin errors to rally for 3 runs in the sixth inning of a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.

    The annual crosstown series between the Elgin and Larkin baseball teams at picturesque Trout Park is the showdown both sides anticipate most. “We’re really looking forward to that series,” Larkin senior Jack McCracken said of Thursday’s game at 6 p.m. and Saturday’s 10 a.m. doubleheader. “We’re two pretty evenly matched teams. I’ve had these games circled on our schedule for awhile.”

    With crucial Upstate Eight Conference River Division games looming on the horizon against St. Charles East and St. Charles North it would have been easy for the Elgin softball team to look past its struggling crosstown rival Larkin on Wednesday. However, that was not the case as the Maroons took nothing for granted in a 20-1 victory that went just 5 innings.
