    A strong finish by the Wauconda girl’s basketball team couldn’t out-do an even stronger start by Lakes. The visiting Eagles raced out to a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter and then rode out a fourth-quarter flurry by Wauconda. Lakes eventually pulled away for a 53-40 North Suburban Conference Prairie Division victory.

    Defense helped the Bartlett boys basketball team enter the Jacobs’ Hinkle Holiday Classic with only one loss. After watching their defense slip a bit and sending them into the Consolation B bracket, the Hawks found their defense again in the bracket’s championship game against Lakes. Bartlett (11-3) forced 7 of the Eagles’ 18 turnovers in the first quarter in building up a 14-6 lead, and the Hawks didn’t look back in a 56-42 win on Saturday.

    South Elgin’s boys basketball team did everything it could to slow down Lakes’ Ethan Sage on Friday, but in the end there was just no stopping the 6-foot-3 senior forward. Sage lit it up for 38 points and also had 9 rebounds. His free throw with 23 seconds left in overtime was the go-ahead point in the Eagles’ 72-71 win in the Consolation B semifinals of the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs.

    Kelly Johnson scored a game-high 17 points, and Antioch’s girls basketball team stayed hot Friday night, cruising to a 63-30 win over host Round Lake. Sophomore Erika Gallimore added a career-high 13 points and 8 rebounds for Antioch, which improved to 9-2 and 4-0 in the North Suburban Prairie Division with its sixth win in a row. The Sequoits’ Amy Reiser added 11 points and 7 steals, while Ashley Reiser finished with 9 points and 6 assists.
