  • Numbers favor Lakes Mar 4, 2015 10:10 PM
Contrary to popular belief, there are some advantages to having only five players on a basketball team. Each of those players, for example, are guaranteed that they will play every single minute of the ballgame. And there’s more — all five players will be able to stretch out on the bus ride to and from school. But in this specific case, with only five players on Wednesday night, Northside Prep was at a decided disadvantage against host Lakes in Class 3A regional semifinal play.

The top-seeded Gunther won 3-2 when he was awarded the 1-point winner as Carello (20-4) was unable to break away from an unyielding hold. “It’s wasn’t at all pretty, but as I said after my quarterfinal this morning, it’s not about style points down here,” said Gunther (36-1). Assured of a state medal, Gunther next tried to become the fourth state champ in Libertyville history. He’ll meet Matthew Rundell (32-3) of Oak Park-River Forest in the title bout on Day 3 of the state tournament.

  • Healthy showing from Sage, Lakes Feb 20, 2015 11:18 PM
There’s a sneaking suspicion that Ethan Sage is feeling a little better than was he leading on. Sidelined with the flu, Sage missed Wednesday’s game at Vernon Hills, a game in which the Eagles lost. Two days later, the nose was still a little stopped up, but the senior guard quickly downplayed it. “Feeling a little better, especially now,” said Sage, who poured in a game-high 12 points in helping lead the Eagles past visiting Antioch 55-33 in North Suburban Prairie boys basketball action on Friday night.

  • Mundelein finding ways to enjoy the struggle Feb 19, 2015 9:55 PM
Staying upbeat during a 2-25 season isn’t easy. So Mundelein coach Corey Knigge has gone out of his way to make sure his players are having some fun off the court. “We’ve had two rough seasons in a row,” said Knigge, referring to last year’s 2-28 campaign and the 0-11 mark in North Suburban Conference play this is part of this year’s two-win season. “We want the kids, especially our seniors, to have some good memories of this season.” On Wednesday, Knigge took his team down to Loyola University to a men’s game against Northern Iowa, which features former Mundelein standout Robert Knar. Last week, the Mustangs made their first trip to Loyola, to watch another former Mundelein star, Sean O’Brien, a sophomore at Southern Illinois.

  • Outright Prairie champs: Vernon Hills Feb 18, 2015 10:52 PM
Before his boys basketball team took its home court in an attempt to make school history, Vernon Hills coach Matt McCarty had one last word for his players as they huddled in their locker room. “Outright.” Lakes, meanwhile, started Wednesday night’s showdown without two starters, including leading scorer and rebounder Ethan Sage, who missed school due to the flu. Which meant you could count the Eagles ... out, right? Wrong. The pesky visitors hung around all game, before Vernon Hills scored the game’s final 6 points to secure a 56-45 win. Robby Nardini scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, as the Cougars clinched their first outright North Suburban Conference Prairie Division championship. Vernon Hills (24-3, 11-0) looks to cap a perfect run in the division when it hosts Grant on Friday night. The Cougars tied North Chicago for the NSC Prairie title in 2010-11.

The Bulldogs went 18-9 under coach Rich Wolf in the 2005-06 season.
