  • Lakes’ Sam Callahan, left, wrestles against Harvard’s Christian Kramer at 145 pounds during team sectional wrestling at Antioch on Tuesday.

Fate frowns on Lakes as Harvard advancesFeb 25, 2014 12:00 AM
Lakes can chalk this one up to the “it just wasn’t meant to be” category as the Eagles met Harvard in the Class 2A Antioch dual team wrestling sectional Tuesday night. Starting the meet at 132 pounds, the Hornets jumped out to a commanding 33-9 lead after eight matches on the way to a 57-12 victory over Lakes. With the outcome decided, the Eagles chose to forfeit the last four bouts, which certainly wasn’t their game plan headed into the meet. Harvard (22-5) advanced to the Elite Eight quarterfinals at 11 a.m. Saturday against Oak Forest at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. After winning its first regional in school history, Lakes closed out the 2013-14 season with an 18-7 record.

  • Bolman comes up big; Libertyville right on trackFeb 22, 2014 12:00 AM
The Lake Forest sectional not only brought in powerhouse Libertyville but also swimmers who don’t have a home pool to their name, from schools such as Antioch, Carmel and the two Grayslakes. And those so-called lonely swimmers certainly contended. Libertyville prevailed as a group and will send most of its team to the state meet in Evanston next weekend. The team scores found the Cats up front with 294, while Lake Forest was second (275.50) and surprising Warren was third (203).

Balliu, Lakes look sharp in victoryFeb 21, 2014 12:00 AM
Lakes guard Jake Balliu walked out of the visitors locker room at Antioch dressed festively in an electric blue bow tie. He had just spoiled the party for the home team. “It’s trending a little bit,” a smiling Balliu said of his fashion statement. Antioch wore long faces at the end of the two rivals’ North Suburban Prairie Division finale, as Balliu’s 15 fourth-quarter points rallied Lakes to a 53-49 win Friday night.

Last year, Steve Polakowski and Emery Parker last year could not have been further from competing for a state title. • Antioch campaigns for sectional participationFeb 20, 2014 12:00 AM
Last year, when Antioch hosted the Class 3A sectional, it was the players on the basketball team that helped with game operations. The Sequoits, who had been eliminated from the tournament by then, did everything from run errands to assist during the 3-point shooting contest. “We’re hosting the sectional again this year, and the goal that we set in our first classroom meeting of the season is that we want to find other people to work the sectional because we want to play in it,” Antioch coach Jim White said. “We’re hoping that we get a better seed to help us get through the regional so that we can get back to our place for the sectional.”

There were a lot of happy coaches and wrestlers Saturday at the conclusion of the Class 2A Lakes individual sectional. Five Lake County area squads qualified three individuals apiece for the state meet at State Farm Center in Champaign. The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes earned a berth downstate. Perennial power Montini was the class of the powerful field, as the Broncos had 12 of their 13 sectional qualifiers advance to state meet, which starts Thursday. Antioch got through three wrestlers, starting with 106-pound senior Briley Schultz.

  • Carmel’s Jack George, middle, drives on Lakes’ Mike Tomasiewicz, left, and Tramone Hudson on Monday night at Lakes.

George, Carmel add to win totalFeb 10, 2014 12:00 AM
Foul trouble kept Carmel’s 6-foot-10 center Jack George out of most of the first half of Monday’s nonconference game at Lakes. He was bound and determined that it wouldn’t keep him from being a part of history. George kept himself on the floor and out of floor trouble after halftime and played a key role in helping the Corsairs pull out a 45-41 win over Lakes. The win is the 20th of the season for Carmel, which is in the midst of its best season in decades. In fact, the dry spell at Carmel has been so long that no one really knows for sure how long it’s been since the Corsairs last won 20 games in a season. George and his teammates do know, however, that at 20-6, they are now only 4 wins away from tying the highest all-time win total of 24 wins set in the early 1980s.

  • Borries, Antioch embrace share of Prairie title Feb 7, 2014 12:00 AM
After capturing their 20th win and a share of the division championship — against the crosstown squad, no less — Antioch’s girls basketball team still had one obstacle in its path. Coach Tim Borries stood between his players and their locker room following the Sequoits’ 63-38 victory over visiting Lakes Friday night. Borries hugged each of his players and assistant coaches. A wide smile never left his face. Antioch (20-6) reached the 20-win mark for the first time this decade — Borries came up empty in his research to find the last Antioch team to post that many victories — and by finishing 10-2 in the North Suburban Prairie, the Sequoits earned a share of the division title with Vernon Hills. Since the NSC split into two divisions in 2000-01, Antioch had never won the NSC Prairie. By virtue of its sweep over the Sequoits, however, Vernon Hills will play in Wednesday’s conference championship game.
