  • Stevenson outruns Lakes Sep 27, 2014 9:42 AM
Lakes’ unblemished record got nicked and so did its budding-star running back. And then there was Stevenson nose guard Blake Drazner, balancing himself on crutches, his ankle wrapped with ice, and yet somehow smiling, his pain numbed by victory, apparently. “I just got my leg all cut up in the wash,” Drazner said. “It’s fine, though. It’s just a bruise.” In a North Suburban Conference crossover in which it probably had more to lose than gain, Stevenson, the state’s top-ranked team in Class 8A, escaped Lakes unscathed. The Patriots prevailed 21-3 in a battle of unbeaten squads, despite a gutsy effort by its opponent.

  • Patient Park putts proficiently for Vernon Hills Sep 20, 2014 10:54 PM
Justin Park had a long time to think about a long putt. The Vernon Hills sophomore refused to wear a long face, however. As he made the long walk back to the clubhouse when a rainstorm interrupted Mundelein’s invitational at Steeple Chase Golf Club on Saturday, instead of frowning, Park focused. He had lagged his putt 10 feet short on the hole on the par-4 13th when the rain came.

  • Three stars power Lakes past Wauconda Sep 19, 2014 11:50 PM
On Friday, the Chicagoland area witnessed the start of our beloved professional hockey club’s training camp down in Indiana. And a hockey theme was also on display in Lake County at Polley Field on Friday night. A hat trick in hockey is when a player scores 3 goals. Host Lakes had three players achieve differing football versions of the feat in their fourth straight win, a 56-13 North Suburban Prairie Division victory over Wauconda.

  • Plenty of highlights in the McNamara home Sep 18, 2014 8:53 PM
Although Bill McNamara missed the “big game” in person, he found it just as much fun to watch on tape. McNamara is the head football coach at Stevenson. His team was busy playing a game against Warren last week at the same time his son Connor, the starting quarterback at Vernon Hills, was taking on North Chicago. The younger McNamara wound up taking part in a school-record 7 touchdowns in a 64-28 win. He rushed for 6 scores and threw for another.

  • Dramatic finish favors Grant over Cary-Grove Sep 13, 2014 4:18 PM
There was a lot of drama between the Cary-Grove and Grant girls cross country squads as they headed down the stretch of the 3-mile race Saturday morning in the Wauconda Invitational. The Trojans gave the Bulldogs all they could handle on the damp Lakewood Forest Preserve course, but it was Grant capturing the championship of the 15-team meet by an 88-96 score over runner-up Cary-Grove. Warren edged Crystal Lake South 103-104 for third place, while Lake Zurich placed fifth with 130 points.

  • Warren wins at the wire at Wauconda Sep 13, 2014 3:16 PM
The race for the finish was close between the Warren and Crystal Lake South boys cross country teams Saturday morning in the Wauconda Invitational. It looked like the Blue Devils were going to have to settle for second place to the Gators as the 3-mile race at Lakewood Forest Preserve headed for the chute. But it was Warren that pulled out an exciting 68-76 victory in the powerful 18-team meet.

Warren’s boys soccer team built a big lead and then held on to edge visiting Oswego East 3-2 in a nonconference match Saturday. Grayslake North 3, Antioch 2: The Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime to win the nonconference match. “Our boys showed a lot of character and composure,” coach Adam DeCaluwe said after his Knights improved to 6-4. “In the opening 10-15 minutes, we had a ton of energy and we were dictating a lot of the play. Antioch started to get some more control of things and put us under pressure from a couple scoring chances they created.” Iven Hernandez’s pair of goals had Antioch up 2-0. Sophomore Grant Nickolson scored the Knights’ first after he got the ball from senior Lucas Buckels. Buckels flicked in the tying goal, which hit an Antioch defender and found the back of the net. Senior Fernando Sanchez earned a penalty kick for Grayslake North, and senior Zach Kottmer converted for the game-winning goal. “We responded very well after halftime and found ourselves creating quality chances,” DeCaluwe said, “and playing a majority of the second half in Antioch’s half of the field.” Crystal Lake Central 1, Wauconda 0: The host Tigers scored in the second half of the nonconference game. Shane Purcell had 6 saves in net for Wauconda (3-6).
