  • Ryan Mullen

    Mullen makes the call, and it’s Miami (Ohio)May 20, 2014 12:00 AM
Ryan Mullen didn’t have to draw on his Ryan Mullen intelligence when offered a Division I football scholarship from Miami (Ohio) University. This was an easy call for a kid whose high school coach calls wise beyond his years. “I knew that I would get other offers — and I have,” the Lakes junior lineman said. “But I just figured, ‘What is going to be better than Miami anyway?’ I couldn’t think of it. So I said, ‘I might as well take a great thing (the scholarship offer) while I have it, before it’s gone.” A 6 foot 3, 270-pounder and varsity starter since his sophomore year, Mullen also had offers from Western Michigan, Ball State, Colgate, UConn and Harvard. He carries a 4.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale and scored a 33 — three off perfection — on his ACT.

After starting last softball season as a sophomore on varsity, Mundelein’s Hannah Bulgart entered this season with a labrum injury that threatened to jeopardize her entire junior campaign. But she returned to the lineup about midway through the season. Then on Saturday, Bulgart’s first home run of the season was a 2-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the sixth that capped the Mustangs’ 14-3 win over visiting Lakes in Game 2 of a doubleheader. Mundelein won the opener, a North Suburban Conference crossover, 11-7, getting home runs from Maddie Zazas (her third of the season) and Jamie Hemmer (seventh).

  • Palatine, Barrington tops as change is in the air at LZMay 16, 2014 12:00 AM
Change was a big theme at the Lake Zurich Class 3A sectional on Friday night. Palatine and Barrington once again locked up in a tense battle, but this time the Pirates were able to get the edge on the Mid-Suburban League champion Fillies to win the sectional title with 106 points. Warren junior sensation Brittny Ellis switched into the 1,600 relay and led the Blue Devils to a come-from-behind victory in 4:01.17. And Lakes junior twins Danielle and Brittani Griesbaum moved from Class 2A to Class 3A, but the result remained the same as they combined to qualify in six events.

Smoothly, Slota slings Lakes past WaucondaMay 14, 2014 12:00 AM
Chase Slota’s razor-sharp effort included working the edges meticulously and artfully. When you’re on display, you got to be at your best. So, Slota wasn’t about to get wild. “I’m working on it,” the Lakes junior baseball player said with a smile of his thin, blond beard. “I had to trim it up for prom (last weekend). I’m going to grow it out again.” At 6 feet 6 and 220 pounds, and with a fastball that he says hit 91 mph last week, Slota boasts more than facial hair that has potential. The right-hander dominated host Wauconda on Wednesday, throwing a complete-game 2-hitter, as Lakes won 6-0 to remain tied for first place in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

  • Grant, Lakes ready for NSC battleMay 14, 2014 12:00 AM
Normally, a rivalry takes a back seat when a conference championship is on the line. But when the rival is the team standing in the way of a title? Well, that’s different. Grant and Lakes are friendly rivals — in fact, they rooted for one another when both finished in the top five in the Class 2A and 3A state meets last spring. But when the gun goes off Thursday night at Mundelein for the North Suburban Conference boys track and field championships, the friendly rivals will be strictly foes — for one night, at least. Field events start at 4 p.m., with finals on the track slated to start no earlier than 6 p.m.

  • Softball / Lake County roundupMay 12, 2014 12:00 AM
Wauconda softball coach Tim Rennels put his head down and took a step toward his team’s dugout after Alyssa Wagner flailed at a strike-two pitch for seemingly the last out of the game at Grant. But while Grant began to celebrate, first-base coach Dave Mills told Wagner to run to first base, which she did, because Caitlyn Moran’s pitch bounced in. After the umpires talked about it, they ruled that Wagner was never tagged on the dropped-third strike and that she was safe at first base. Kayla Wedl then hit an inside-the-park home run, and Taylor McCarthy followed with a solo blast over the fence. When Wedl retired Grant in order in the bottom of the seventh, Wauconda had a shocking, 3-1 win Monday to remain undefeated in the North Suburban Prairie Division. Wauconda improved to 20-7 and 9-0 in the NSC Prairie.

The pair of wins hiked Mundelein’s record to 19-8.

Greatness for Grant in NSC meetMay 9, 2014 12:00 AM
On a night Lakes' Brittani Griesbaum nearly beat the great Brittny Ellis of Warren, when Griesbaum's teammate Kortney Schardt and fellow 1,600-meters competitor Lisa Bennatan of Lake Forest engaged in a photo finish of their own, Grant made sure there would be no doubt which track team would emerge as the North Suburban Conference champion. By the time anchor-leg Delaney Basala grabbed the baton, Grant's speedy sophomore had a large lead. She cruised to the finish, as the Bulldogs (4:08.18) won by nearly three seconds. Before the 1,600 relay even began, the Bulldogs had all but officially secured their first NSC title since 2007. Grant totaled 111 points at Vernon Hills on Friday, while Lakes (103.75) was second. Griesbaum's stellar night also included breaking the meet record in the long jump, as her mark of 18-5.5 bettered the 18-1.75 set by North Chicago's Aisha Morton in 2000.
