  • Lakes looking better already Nov 25, 2014 11:01 PM
Already in its first two games of the season, the Lakes boys basketball team has covered both ends of the spectrum. On Monday, it was fight and claw back from a 16-point halftime deficit only to lose by 4 points to Uplift. There was no fighting and clawing back on Tuesday. Lakes got out to a breezy lead and was in firm control from start to finish in easing to a 68-38 victory over Mundelein in the Mundelein Thanksgiving tournament.

  • Fond finishes for Mundelein’s Falconer, Kordik Nov 22, 2014 9:14 PM
Winning medals is always nice. It goes a little deeper than that, though, for the Mundelein girls swimming team. “Years from now no one will remember if you won or what place you took,” said senior Erin Falconer, who capped a brilliant career by qualifying individually for state in the 100 and 200 freestyle all four years. “The main thing I’m going to remember is having fun and the camaraderie we have on this team. That’s what I’ll miss the most.” Falconer, along with fellow seniors Rachel Robb, Jennifer Kordik, Aijan Urmat, and Lauren Blake have certainly all helped keep Mundelein swimming on the map, especially after their performance this weekend at girls swimming and diving state finals at Evanston Township High School.

  • True to form, Mundelein’s Falconer returns to finals Nov 22, 2014 1:01 AM
False starts can be a little unnerving. Unless you’re Mundelein senior Erin Falconer. After four false starts in her heat of the 200-yard freestyle Friday due to malfunctioning equipment for the starter, Falconer shook off the distraction and wound up victorious with a time of 1:48.83. That was good enough for the top spot heading into Saturday’s finale of the state swimming and diving finals at Evanston, which begins at noon.

Returning all-conference player Elly Daleske added 16 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals for Lake Zurich, while fellow senior Rachel Dawson chipped in 13 points and 9 boards.

  • Emotional successes for Saucedo, Libertyville Nov 15, 2014 9:18 PM
Once she could see the scoreboard, the reaction was self-explanatory. Libertyville sophomore Lucy Saucedo broke down into tears after seeing her time in the 50-yard freestyle was right at state qualifying cut of 24.59 seconds, which means for the first time in her young career she will head to the state finals next weekend at Evanston Township High School. “I was just trying to break 25 seconds, and when a friend brought my glasses to me in the pool and I could see I qualified, I lost it,” said Saucedo, who later joined teammates Emma Richert, Anne Barnett and Harriet Davies on state-qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “We’ve been working on sprints and less breathing. That really helped me today.”

With a lot of confidence and plenty of determination, Lakes junior Kortney Schardt was ready to make headlines Saturday morning at the 36th annual girls cross country state meet. Schardt proved once again that she was ready for prime time as she ran a personal best time of 17:33, breaking her own school record by seven seconds on her way to a fantastic seventh place in the Class 2A state finals on the 3-mile Detweiller Park course. Yorkville continued its dominance with a fourth consecutive team title as the Foxes (79 points) easily outdistanced runner-up squad Lake Forest (165) for top honors.

  • Sweet finish favors St. Francis at Lakes Nov 8, 2014 10:38 PM
It’s not to say that St. Francis senior quarterback Clint Bobowski was happy to see his team down 10 with 6:03 remaining in a Class 6A second round contest at Lakes, but the seemingly always positive Bobowski had a different spin on the situation. “The way we looked at it was, the greater the deficit, the sweeter the comeback,” he said. The comeback for the Spartans was sweet — even sweeter for Bobowski. With No. 6 St. Francis trailing third-seeded Lakes 36-26, Bobowski, who had twice come out of the game after partially dislocating his left shoulder, engineered a pair of scoring drives to rally the visiting Spartans to a 39-36 victory Saturday.

  • Healthy playoff start for James, Lakes Oct 31, 2014 11:45 PM
A new season — playoff football — delivered a healthy and revitalized Izayah James. “I feel like a whole brand-new person,” said Lakes’ junior running back, whose injured hip limited him to only special-teams duties last week after he missed the Eagles’ Week 8 showdown against Antioch. “I was hungry to get in again.” On the field, Lakes’ domination was nothing new. It was the same-ol’ Eagles, as they started the Class 6A state playoffs like they ended the regular season. Led by James’ 143 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries, host Lakes led from start to finish in a 38-14 win over No. 14 Prairie Ridge on a chilly Friday night.
