    A 25-year-old Arlington Heights man faces up to 30 years in prison after his arrest Monday culminated a three-month investigation into cocaine selling in McHenry County, authorities said. Steven M. Grimm is charged with nine felonies, including three counts of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park.

Lions of Illinois Candy Day will be on Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11. Members of the Dundee Township Lions Club will be out in the community in front of stores to raise donations to fund programs to fight preventable blindness and provide vision and hearing services to men, women and children in Illinois.

In only his early 20s, he has an amazing understanding of the workings of the strange and bizarre, to the point where he defies the boundaries between what we assume can and can’t be done.

    Let's Dance Big Band is back for their second performance of the year at the Sage Gallery of Lakeside Legacy Arts Park in Crystal Lake. The performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. The 20-piece swing band was formed in 2010 with a nucleus of players from Sun City in Huntley.

    Home State Bank and McHenry County radio station Star 105.5 honored seventh-grade language arts and social studies teacher Belinda Strebel as “Teacher of the Month” on Sept. 30 at Home State Bank. Strebel was nominated for the award by former student Elena Starcher, who is now an eighth-grader at Bernotas Middle School.

    Renowned opera singer Gwendolyn Brown will perform as part of the Bethany Arts Series at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake. Brown will make her debut this fall season with the Chicago Lyric Opera as Maria in Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” Other recent operatic appearances include covering Queenie in “Showboat” with both the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Washington National Opera in 2013.

    The Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Music Department presents its Cabaret fall concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20. This annual event, held in the cafeteria at the school, 760 E. Westleigh Road in Lake Forest, is open to the public free of charge as a means of introducing this year’s musical groups and student talent.

    Art For All of Elgin is presenting a fine art exhibit, “Fall for Art,” Oct. 12-25 in the Robin and Mark Seigle Gallery located at Artspace Lofts, 51 S. Spring St., Elgin. A reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. Light refreshments will be served. While the reception is free, donations will be gratefully accepted.

    Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will open Camp Dean in Big Rock to the public for a Camp Explorers program on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This youth and family-friendly event will include cardboard boat races, archery, crate stacking, fishing, and a scavenger hunt.

    Elgin Theatre Company will hold auditions for "Leading Ladies." Auditions will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Elgin Academy’s Rider Center. If callbacks are necessary, it will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21.

     
  • Illinois Railway Museum to restore classic Streamliner Oct 3, 2014 7:11 PM
    The Illinois Railway Museum in Union has begun a restoration project planned to return the famous streamlined Electroliner to operational condition in 2017. The museum's Electroliner received an external restoration when it returned to Illinois in the 1980s, but problems with the train's eight electric motors prevented the streamliner from returning to operation. Work is now under way to return the luxury streamliner to operable condition within the next three years. In addition to work on the motors, work is needed on the wheels, trucks, air brakes and air conditioning before it can be operated.

    The Elgin Community College Arts Center will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic movie musical "The Sound of Music" on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it presents "Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music." A preshow Austrian-themed dinner starts at 5 p.m. in Spartan Terrace Restaurant.
