    One in three Americans is now a stepparent, a stepchild, a step sibling, or member of a blended family. That’s a big change from the ‘Leave it to Beaver’ days. The fact is; the traditional nuclear family (families where both parents are married and live together) is on the decline, from 45 percent of households in 1960 to 23 percent this year. Sept. 16 is National Step Family Day, which raises awareness for this growing demographic of families.

    Chicago-area moms who have questions about food, farmers and farming will have their questions answered during a tour of a dairy farm and milk processing plant Sept. 13. During the tour, more than 20 Illinois Farm Families “Field Moms” will have a chance to tour Dean’s processing plant to see what happens to milk supplied by Illinois dairy farmers. The Field Moms, urban and suburban moms interested in learning more about food and farming, will then travel to the farm of Dale and Linda Drendel in Hampshire to see cows being milked, talk about animal care with veterinarian, Zach Janssen, and learn about the benefits of dairy products with dietician, Robin Brown.

  • McHenry County drops controversial intersection plan Sep 9, 2014 5:55 PM
    McHenry County officials have dropped a controversial idea to build a continuous-flow intersection at Algonquin and Randall roads for improved traffic flow. The McHenry County Board now will consider a more conventional intersection improvement proposal that includes adding through and turn lanes and limiting access points at its Sept. 16 meeting. The move comes after months of lobbying by businesses and property owners along the Randall Road corridor and by officials in Lake in the Hills, who opposed the CFI idea because it would have required a major redesign of that intersection. “This new proposal for a conventional intersection ... I think it’s a splendid solution to a problem that is real and does need to be fixed,” Lake in the Hills Village President Paul Mulcahy said.

    Dr. Muthusamy Doraisamy from Karur, India, recently became an associate member of the Dundee Lions Club. He visits regularly with his daughter in West Dundee and while here he is an active Lion. The Lions Club is an international organization but this is a rare opportunity to work side by side with someone who is from so far away but so close in values when it comes to helping a community.
