Boosting business, having fun: the guy in the Statue of Liberty costumeFeb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
If you drive up and down the Randall Road corridor any time during tax season, you've probably seen Tim Kelly or one of his co-workers waving at you from the side of the road. Kelly is one of a handful of part-time employees at Liberty Tax Service centers in the area who don the flowing gown and foam crown each winter, posing as the Statue of Liberty in hopes of drawing customers into the tax preparation business.

  • Suburban schools could get more money in proposed budget Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Elgin Area School District U-46 would have had $7.55 million more this year had the state paid its full per-pupil aid amount. Under a proposed budget by the Illinois State Board of Education, next year U-46 and all other districts would see the money state statute says they're owed. But that'd be an $875 million increase in the 2014 education budget over this year's allocation. And it's up to elected officials to decide whether the board of education's proposal gets approved. Local districts are more than skeptical.

    Dundee-Crown tops rival Jacobs Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Play-in games for any type of team can be a pressure-cooker. Try it on for size when you bring in a District 300 rivalry into mix. Jacobs sought its third win against rival Dundee-Crown this season Monday night at the Class 4A Streamwood girls basketball regional and for the first 8 minutes, leading by as many as 9 while making 4 of its first 5 shots, the Golden Eagles looked as if they were on their way to completing that feat. But D-C flipped a switch and Jacobs went ice cold. The Chargers outscored the Golden Eagles 57-35 from the second quarter on in a 61-45 victory over Jacobs,

Huntley’s 29-game winning streak against division opponents was gone in 29 seconds. Consecutive Dundee-Crown 3-pointers by seniors Dylan Kissack and Brandon Rodriguez 29 seconds apart turned a tenuous 2-point lead into an 8-point cushion with 1:49 to play and propelled the Chargers to a 47-38 victory in Carpentersville Saturday night.

  • Orange, Jacobs take care of Cary-Grove Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
It’s scary how good Jacobs sophomore guard Chrishawn Orange could become by the time he’s a senior. Connecting on 11-of-13 shots from the field, Orange poured in a career high 25 points to lead Jacobs to a 77-63 win over Cary-Grove in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball action in Algonquin Saturday night.

  • Westminster 2nd, Harvest 5th at NAC tourney Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Westminster Christian boys basketball coach Bruce Firchau couldn’t fault his team’s effort, but his Warriors simply had no answer for Makur Puou. Mooseheart’s 6-foot-10 junior was a beast, scoring 32 points and grabbing 9 rebounds to lead the Ramblers past Westminster 55-31 Saturday to win the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Rockford Christian Life. Colin Brandon scored 14 points for Westminster (16-11), which saw its 9-game winning streak snapped.

Cary-Grove’s Cullen the man at Barrington Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
How do you improve on perfection? Don’t ask Michael Cullen, because the Cary-Grove sophomore still feels he’s a long way from being there. Of course his opponents might feel a little differently if they were asked. Another simply smashing performance from Cullen was put in the books following a dominating 11-1 major decision in his 113-pound final against Colin Kenyon (New Trier, 33-8) at the Class 3A Barrington sectional Saturday. The win sends the Trojans’ star into the 3A state tournament on the front foot, and a well-deserved top 4 seed when things begin Thursday on the big floor of Assembly Hall in Champaign. Cullen (42-0) will be joined by teammate Michael Underwood (138) and Logan Hanselmann (120) both for the first time, after each won in dramatic style in their afternoon state qualifying bouts.

Westminster nails down 1A regional crown Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Westminster Christian guard Kinsley Donahue was disappointed that Thursday’s snowstorm pushed the Class 1A Harvest Christian girls basketball regional final to Friday. Even more so for the pumped-up Donahue, as the game began Friday night, she waited even longer being the sixth man in Ken Flickinger’s group. But when Flickinger called for her to settle her teammates down when the Warriors were trailing by 3 points with 1:43 left in the first quarter, Donahue’s role became even more important. Westminster needed her spark off the bench to get the team back in the flow. “I kind of prayed a lot before the game and I feel I kind of got the strength,” said Donahue. “Coach encouraged me to make an effort when I came off the bench to spark something.” Donahue rose to the occasion. Her 13 points and 4 rebounds, including 6 points in the second quarter, helped Westminster fight off Christian Liberty, which hung around in the first half. Freshman Maddie Versluys took care of the rest with a game-high 21 points, including 7 rebounds as top-seeded Westminster grabbed a second-straight regional crown in a 62-43 win over No. 2 Christian Liberty at the Mitchell Swaback Athletic Center in Elgin.

  • Crystal Lake South’s pressure produces win Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Lauren Del Vecchio loves the labor that goes with playing the point in Crystal Lake South’s diamond-and-one, full-court pressure. “It’s my favorite position,” the 6-foot senior said. “I like to watch their eyes and get up on them. It gets me going and helps get the team going.” There was no doubt about how much defense got the Gators rolling in Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference girls basketball crossover. They turned 27 turnovers into 20 points and pitched a third-quarter shutout in a 50-32 victory over visiting Woodstock North at Gator Alley.
