Starting Monday, March 2, the organization will expand its walk-in admissions hours. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, individuals will be able to visit Pioneer Center’s Veterans Parkway location in McHenry at a time most convenient for them — without calling ahead for an appointment.

    The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County invite the public to celebrate its 45th anniversary. The brunch event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Loyola University’s Retreat and Ecology Campus in Woodstock. Scott Meyer, a hydrogeologist at the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois, will be presenting his program, “The Future of McHenry County’s Groundwater Resources.” Meyer and his colleagues mapped water levels from 329 McHenry County wells in 1994 and again in 2011.

    Become a citizen scientist and be a frog monitor. Participate in McHenry County Conservation District’s Frog Monitoring Workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at Prairieview Education Center in Crystal Lake. You will learn the techniques and protocol for monitoring the 13 species of frogs and toads of the region by their calls. After completing the training, interested volunteers may monitor district sites or private wetlands.

    Traditionally the Ash Wednesday liturgy at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart marks the start of a major service project. This Lent students at the all-girls college prep high school in Lake Forest will help start a music program at the relatively new Sacred Heart Secondary School that’s educating and empowering some poor and orphaned children in Tanzania, Africa.
