    The fancy record that Lake Park’s boys basketball team has compiled through 20 games has been a pleasant surprise. After taking down host Hoffman Estates 53-33 Tuesday night in nonconference play, the Lancers improved to 17-3. “If you would have told me that we would be 17-3 after 20 games before the season started, I would be a little surprised,” Lake Park forward Connor Vance said. Tuesday’s 17th win was a one-for-all, all-for-one effort, but Vance carried the flag. He scored 8 of Lake Park’s first 10 points as the Lancers got out to a 10-3 lead against the Hawks (4-11).

    As the day drew closer to an end at the 60th annual Berman Holiday Classic, Barrington coach Dave Udchik still had a healthy respect for the strength and talent of Oak Forest. But when the Broncos’ Connor Boundy (145) and Julius Smith (160) both bumped off the the top seed during the semifinals, Smith’s coming in a head-to-head with Oak Forest standout Patrick Kristin, things took a decided turn for the better for Barrington. Those two victories, along with another in the semis from Travis Cysewski at 160, and the collective strength and depth of the Broncos’ lineup proved more than the field could handle as Barrington carried off the championship trophy with 206 overall points, 12.5 more than Oak Forest. Lincoln-Way West (147), Deerfield (144.5) and Metea Valley (133) rounded out the top five of this prestigious and diverse 31-team group.

    With his team trailing 19-11 to Notre Dame with 1:26 left in the first quarter, Lake Park coach Josh Virostko thought his Lancers might be in for a long night. “They had us on the ropes. We were pressing too much and I think we were too hyped up,” said Virostko. “They were executing with every play they made. But then we scored two baskets at the end of the quarter to get back to 19-15. I knew we were back in the game.” The Lancers used a second-half surge after being tied at 29 to take down the Dons 62-52 in the championship game of the 41st annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic on Saturday night. Senior guard Marcus McDaniel, an all-tournament selection, provided the spark.

    Lake Park doubled down on Fremd in the semifinals of the 37th annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic on Friday night. After losing to Fremd earlier this season, Lake Park decided to double-team the Fremd guards when they had possession in the front court. The Lancers were successful in frustrating Fremd’s offense, and keeping the Vikings away from the basket to earn a 47-40 victory. Lake Park (13-2) will meet Notre Dame in Saturday’s title game at 8:45 p.m. It will be the Lancers’ first trip to the Hardwood finals since 2004, when they won the title for a second straight year.

    Lake Park had no fear going into the land of the giants Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 37th annual Wheeling Hardwood Classic. The Lancers do not have a starter over 6-foot-2. But Lake Park still managed to end up nearly eye to eye with a much taller Libertyville team, whose front line features a 6-foot-10 center and a pair of 6-6 forwards, and came away with an impressive 55-40 victory.
