Defense lifts St. Charles East over Lake Park Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
A quality of a good basketball team is the ability to win when things aren't necessarily going your way. On a night where the 3-pointers weren't dropping with any regularity and shooting in general was a bit off, St. Charles East's girls basketball team kicked in another phase of its game during Monday's Class 4A regional tournament opener against Lake Park. Clinging to a 26-21 halftime advantage, the Saints (17-11) turned up their full-court defensive pressure and forced 14 third-quarter turnovers during a 23-13 surge that helped extend the lead to 49-34. From there, St. Charles East put the game away with 10 fourth-quarter free throws during their 67-49 victory over the Lancers (1-27).

Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Fremd absorbs beam bobbles; Meadows' Johnston excelsJan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd wobbled a bit at the finish, but the Viking were able to keep it together. Fremd cruised through the first two events on the vault (36.475) and bars (36.775) and looked to be headed for an impressive score. The beam (34.825) put a dent in the Vikings’ attack, but they survived four falls in winning a 21st consecutive regional title with 143.525 points at their own gym in Palatine. Lake Park took second with 136.275 points, followed by Rolling Meadows (130.575), and Maine West (115.175). Fremd advances to its own sectional next Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Lake Park: Both questions must pass to build pool Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
If voters give mixed signals on the building of a new swimming pool for Lake Park High School, the school has formally vowed not to proceed with the project. Two questions will appear on the April 9 ballot — one authorizing the school district to borrow $8 million to build the pool and another to increase taxes to cover the estimated $380,000 needed annually to maintain it. If one fails, the project will be dropped, scool officials say.
