  • Lake Forest survives Lake Zurich’s best shot Jan 24, 2015 9:30 PM
Lake Zurich focused on its target and chucked Spears. At Evan Boudreaux. “Tim did a good job tonight,” Lake Zurich guard Mike Travlos said of teammate Tim Spears. In an attempt to at least slow down the Dartmouth-bound Boudreaux and Lake Forest’s once-beaten boys basketball team, Lake Zurich started Spears, a 6-foot-1, broad-shouldered junior. Spears did his best, but Boudreaux was his usual tough self in the end, as visiting Lake Forest pulled out a 52-49 victory in a North Suburban Lake Division thriller Friday night.

  • Murillo, Antioch roll to win No. 20 Jan 19, 2015 7:48 PM
One of the marks of a good team is when every player knows their role. And Antioch junior back-up center Maddy Murillo certainly understands hers. Especially on the defensive side of the ball, Murillo provides a much-needed lift when starters are tired and or are in foul trouble. “She’s a great sixth man and gives us a crucial 8 to 10 minutes a game. It’s so nice to have a 6-footer coming off the bench too,” Sequoits head coach Tim Borries said after his team put the finishing touches on host Lake Forest 58-35 Monday afternoon to claim the first-place hardware in the Martin Luther King tournament. With the win Monday, the Sequoits improved to 20-2 overall and extended their win streak to 18.

On Saturday, Basara hit a career-best in winning the all-around with a 38.20 and also had her best vault (9.87) at the Lake County meet held at Lake Forest High School.

  • Stevenson’s victory well worth watching Jan 15, 2015 11:12 PM
Ryan Rosenbaum acknowledged it’s happened before, when, while on the basketball court with Jalen Brunson, he’s gotten caught “watching” his Stevenson teammate dazzle. Down the stretch in Thursday night’s North Suburban Conference Lake Division showdown in Lake Forest’s jam-packed, intimate gym, the home team was watching Brunson. But instead of attacking the basket, as he did the majority of the fourth quarter, Brunson delivered a no-look pass to a wide-open Rosenbaum, who scored under the basket. Rosenbaum’s only bucket of the night broke a 65-65 tie, and Stevenson had the lead for good en route to a 76-69 win. Brunson’s 41 points led the way, as Stevenson improved to 15-1 and 6-0 in the NSC Lake, while handing Lake Forest (16-1, 5-1) its first loss.

  • Record goes to Boudreaux as Libertyville falls short Dec 13, 2014 10:37 PM
Evan Boudreaux had a certain mindset going into Friday night’s game, knowing he needed 21 points to set a Lake Forest boys basketball career scoring record. What he didn’t know was how much opposition there would be to his plan. The Dartmouth-bound 6-foot-8 big man dealt with missed shots, numerous blocks by Libertyville’s Joe Borcia, Ben Kimpler and Peter Feeley, and even committed some turnovers. On top of all that, Boudreaux injured his left ankle by stepping on a foot in the fourth quarter while coming down with a rebound. At the time, he was 7 points short of 21. But after two minutes off the court for some tape to his left ankle, Boudreaux returned to score precisely the points he needed. He got the final one from the free throw line with just under 11 seconds left as Lake Forest held off host Libertyville 39-33 in a North Suburban Lake Division battle.

The Sequoits’ Amy Reiser added 11 points and 7 steals, while Ashley Reiser finished with 9 points and 6 assists.

  • Boudreaux’s big effort lifts Lake Forest past Lake Zurich Dec 10, 2014 10:50 PM
Thrilled with another win for his boys basketball team, Lake Forest coach Phil LaScala chuckled at the prospects of what he knows would be anything but funny. “We’re a little nervous right now, that it’s not spreading a little further,” LaScala said after his Scouts held off visiting Lake Zurich 60-54 in a battle of unbeaten North Suburban Lake Division teams Wednesday night, despite missing 6-foot-7 starting forward Steve Vogrich and guard Matt Begley due to mono. Vogrich is expected to miss a month. As long as Lake Forest has a healthy Evan Boudreaux, however, the Scouts will remain formidable. The 6-8, Dartmouth-bound Boudreaux posted game bests of 31 points and 15 rebounds as the Scouts improved to 6-0 and 2-0 in the NSC Lake.

  • This Stevenson teams bears watching Dec 3, 2014 10:28 PM
Chalk it up as a good start to the season for Stevenson’s girls gymnastics team, as the Patriots got past visiting Lake Forest 122.05-119.9 in a North Suburban Conference opener in Lincolnshire on Wednesday night. Even two-time state beam champion Alyssa Weisberg liked what she saw from a supporting role in the stands. She is sitting out her senior year after dealing with a wrist injury and a concussion last season. “I’m mainly here supporting the team, it’s the most important thing,” said Weisberg, watching the meet. “It’s definitely strange sitting on this side.”

  • Deep thoughts for victorious Vernon Hills Nov 25, 2014 11:03 PM

She responded by scoring a team-high 13 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 2 steals, as Vernon Hills captured the championship of its own Cougar Classic with a 51-26 win over Lake Forest.

  • Emotional successes for Saucedo, Libertyville Nov 15, 2014 9:18 PM
Once she could see the scoreboard, the reaction was self-explanatory. Libertyville sophomore Lucy Saucedo broke down into tears after seeing her time in the 50-yard freestyle was right at state qualifying cut of 24.59 seconds, which means for the first time in her young career she will head to the state finals next weekend at Evanston Township High School. “I was just trying to break 25 seconds, and when a friend brought my glasses to me in the pool and I could see I qualified, I lost it,” said Saucedo, who later joined teammates Emma Richert, Anne Barnett and Harriet Davies on state-qualifying 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. “We’ve been working on sprints and less breathing. That really helped me today.”
