  • Lake Forest’s Boudreaux makes big trouble for Lake Zurich Jan 24, 2014 11:29 PM
A well-executed play by Lake Zurich’s big boys couldn’t upstage Lake Forest’s big-time player, who’s not so small himself. Evan Boudreaux piled up game highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds, Cal Miller added 13 points while helping hold Bears leading scorer Mike Travlos to single digits, and host Lake Forest pulled away in the second half to post a 61-46 win in North Suburban Lake Division action Friday night. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound Boudreaux hit a pair of 3-pointers, and his 2 free throws, after his own steal under the Scouts basket, with 1.3 seconds left in the opening half had his team up 26-20. • Big night for Dillon, Stevenson Jan 17, 2014 11:34 PM
The basket — a pump fake to get his defender airborne and then a drive and finish — was vintage Jalen Brunson. Only it wasn’t Jalen Brunson who made the slick move during Stevenson’s 66-50 win over visiting Lake Forest in the North Suburan Conference Lake Division basketball game Friday night. It was Nick Dillon, who looks like he could be a bodyguard for Brunson, the Patriots’ star. “I learn from the best,” the 6-foot-3, 265-pound Dillon said with a smile. Stevenson’s best was at his best again. Brunson dropped in a game-high 25 points, including four 3-pointers, while also coming up with 5 steals and taking a pair of charges. Fellow guard Connor Cashaw added 15 points and 12 rebounds, as Stevenson (14-1, 4-1) rebounded from its loss a week earlier to Zion-Benton.

Including Carmel, which got a good start to the new year of competition in the Robin Straus Invitational on Saturday at Lake Forest High School. The Corsairs posted their highest score of the season — 140.675 — which was good for third place and was a half-point improvement over their previous best this season. Lyons took top honors in the team race at 150.45, followed by Prairie Ridge at 146.075.

  • Gillespie, Warren stop Lake Forest Jan 9, 2014 10:46 PM
In Warren’s signature victory of the season, the team’s leading scorer, Eric Gillespie, didn’t score one 1-point basket the entire night in Lake Forest. That still left him with three 3-pointers and 12 free throws, good for 21 points and top scoring honors. Twelve-game winner Lake Forest opened a quick 12-4 lead in this key NSC Lake Division matchup. And then Warren went on a 12-0 run. It was still anyone’s game heading to the fourth quarter when Gillespie, all 5-foot-9 of him, took over the game. He scored 14 of his points in the decisive period as Warren stunned the winner of the York Tournament 55-43.

  • New look, new lineup for Vernon Hills Nov 21, 2013 11:17 PM
Sydney Smith is sporting a new look. And the four-year varsity starter isn’t alone. Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team took the court Thursday night for its second game in its own fifth annual Cougar Classic without some familiar faces. While center Meri Bennett-Swanson is off playing Division I basketball at DePaul after four varsity seasons, and Brie Bahlmann (Appalachian State, soccer) and Alina Lehocky (Illinois Wesleyan, basketball) have also graduated after helping the Cougars place second in the state in Class 3A, Lauren Webb is watching from the bench. The captain of last season’s Daily Herald Lake County All-Area team, Webb has been diagnosed with a navicular fracture in her right foot. One constant: Vernon Hills is still tough to beat, as the Cougars topped Lake Forest 42-18 to improve to 2-0.

  • Batavia's defense stymies Lake Forest Nov 17, 2013 8:35 AM
Throughout the season, Batavia's high-scoring offense has earned its share of deserving accolades. The defense is not too bad, either. On a wind-swept, rain-soaked day when their offense was limited to a season-low scoring output, the Bulldogs (11-1) stepped up on the defensive side of the ball during Saturday's Class 6A football state quarterfinal clash against Lake Forest (9-3) at Bulldog Stadium.
