  • Big breakthrough for Vernon Hills Feb 21, 2015 10:19 PM
From hugs to heartbreak, the gamut of emotions were on their usual display Saturday afternoon in the Vernon Hills boys swimming sectional meet. As far as the hugs, there were plenty to go around, especially after Vernon Hills’ junior Brian Rabinowitz had just finished second in the 100-yard backstroke and qualified for next weekend’s state meet at New Trier. “I just missed in the previous three events today, but this definitely makes up for it,” said Rabinowitz, who swam a 53.50. “It feels great to finally end the drought. I was a little worried coming in, but I just trusted my training. I’d love to get a 53 or lower (at state).” The drought Rabinowitz mentioned refers to a four-year absence since Vernon Hills has had a state qualifier in boys swimming.

  • Stevenson’s perfect in NSC Lake Feb 20, 2015 11:57 PM
Lost in the shuffle of a No. 1 state ranking, an undefeated record in the state of Illinois, back-to-back state finals runs and a couple of Division I superstars on the roster is the fact that the Stevenson boys basketball team has some enviable depth. Even its role players are good. Some of them, namely Ryan Rosenbaum and Ryuji Aoki, made a huge difference on Friday night as the host Patriots put what is likely the first of many exclamation points on this season. Stevenson officially won the North Suburban Conference Lake Division by running over second-place Lake Forest, 65-48. The Patriots swept Lake Forest this season and completed a 12-0 run through the Lake Division. They improve to 22-2 overall, with their only losses coming to teams from other states during holiday tournaments.

  • Fremd adapts, gets past Libertyville Feb 19, 2015 11:03 PM
Dressed in her full Fremd basketball uniform, including a warm-up top over her jersey, Haley Gorecki sat on the bench, head up and ears perked. She even handed her teammates tiny cups of water during a timeout. “She wanted to play,” Vikings coach Dave Yates said of his 6-foot guard. “But we told her, ‘If we need it, we’ll do it.’ ” Fremd never needed its Duke-bound senior in Thursday night’s Class 4A Lake Forest regional final. Behind point guard Brianna Lewis’ game-high 11 points and a defensive effort that allowed only 7 field goals, the top-seeded Vikings defeated No. 8 Libertyville 45-24. Yates said Gorecki tweaked her ankle at the end of practice Wednesday. She had scored 30 points in the regional semifinal against Zion-Benton.

  • Koto, Stevenson take winning position in NSC Feb 14, 2015 9:17 PM
He was understandably a little tired after having just competed in the 200-yard freestyle, and then the 500 freestyle a few events later. Upon reflection, though, it’s definitely a position Stevenson senior boys swimming team co-captain Nick Koto has no issues with. “Yeah, a bit tired but I swam good swims,” said Koto, who posted season-best times in finishing second in both the 200 free (1:43.88) and 500 free (4:45.65). Koto also had a season-best split time of 22.26 when he anchored the 200 free relay, which also finished second. There, he joined forces with Alex Kapecki, Viktor Makarskyy and Dimitriy Pelutis. Koto’s performance was one of many good ones by the Patriots, who edged out Lake Forest for a sixth NSC title in seven years. The Pats collected 337 points, while the runner-up Scouts tallied 317.

  • Stevenson stays focused, handles Lake Forest Feb 6, 2015 11:14 PM
It’s difficult staying focused when you have all of the hoopla that usually accompanies senior night. Except, perhaps, if you’re the Stevenson girls basketball team. In what has been a magical season to this point, the Patriots, who graduate three seniors from their varsity roster, looked anything but distracted in handling Lake Forest 84-56 in the North Suburban Lake regular-season finale Friday night in Lincolnshire.
