    Lake County’s regional school board next week could decide if a small residential subdivision in Lake Forest is allowed to switch high school districts. Willow Lake Farms contains 53 lots, only two of which contain occupied homes, attorney Jim Bakk said.

    All the pieces came together for Lake Forest, which netted its first-ever girls soccer state championship on Saturday afternoon. First, Lake Forest goalkeeper Ginnie Revenaugh made a key diving save in the penalty kick shootout. Then Paige Bourne delivered the game-winning kick, and the rest was history as the Scouts enjoyed a big postgame celebration in front of the goal. Lake Forest got past Normal Community West 2-1, 4-2 in penalty kicks, in the Class 2A championship game at North Central College.

     
  • Confident Lake Forest nets Class 2A semifinal win Jun 6, 2014 7:20 PM
    Playing at state for the first time, Lake Forest’s girls soccer team appeared to be more comfortable than the reigning champion Chatham Glenwood. First-half goals by Jenny McKendry and Carly Hoke helped lift the Scouts to a 2-0 victory in their Class 2A state semifinal at North Central College in Naperville. Lake Forest (18-6-1) will play Normal Community West (27-1) for the state championship at 1 p.m. today. The Wildcats shut out Hinsdale South 1-0 in the other semifinal.

    Lake Forest’s girls soccer team stopped St. Viator’s postseason run Friday with a 3-0 decision in the Class 2A Grayslake North sectional championship game.

     
  • Baseball / Lake County roundup May 20, 2014 11:38 PM
    Libertyville’s baseball team celebrated more than the North Suburban Lake Division championship Tuesday. Anthony Mack fired a five-inning no-hitter, as the Wildcats defeated host Zion-Benton 5-0. Libertyville (26-5) finished 11-1 in the NSC Lake, one game ahead of Mundelein. The Wildcats will play Grant at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for the conference championship in Fox Lake.

    Sophomore Alex Masnica capped off Elk Grove’s trio of home runs in a big way Saturday afternoon. After Becca Maher and Brooke Barges had already cleared the fence earlier in the game with solo blasts, Masnica walloped a 2-run walk-off homer to left center with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Grens a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with visiting Elk Grove. Gina Cirrincione doubled to set up Masnica’s blast which gave pitcher Mary Hirschauer the complete game win that included 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. The Grenadiers went on to sweep the twin bill with a 13-2 five-inning victory as freshman Taylor Leach fired a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. She also belted a triple.

    Powered by the one-two singles punch of boys tennis standouts Peter Tarwid and Brice Polender, visiting Lake Forest defeated Stevenson 5-2 Thursday at the Patriots’ home courts on a warm, windy day at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex.

    Five fabulous freshmen are getting their kicks for Warren’s girls soccer team. Kaitlyn Chomko, Lindsey Hardiman, Alliyah Parker, Alissa Ramsden and Natalee Slater are starting and have helped the Blue Devils put together a successful run. “I think we’re playing very well against some players who are taller and older,” said Ramsden, who plays on defense and in the midfield. “It’s a great honor to be playing (on varsity) as a freshman.” The “Fab Five” couldn’t help the Blue Devils from suffering a 2-1 loss to host Lake Forest in a North Suburban Lake Division match Thursday, however. Warren fell to 6-4-1 and 2-1-1 in the NSC Lake, while Lake Forest improved to 7-4-1 and 1-2.

     
  • Former Lake Forest High School theater adviser pleads guilty to sex abuse charges Apr 22, 2014 5:22 PM
    A former Lake Forest High School theater adviser pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in front of Judge Daniel Shanes at the Lake County courthouse. Benjamin Davidson was sentenced to 30 months of probation and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

     
  • Donated dresses brighten prom for thousands Apr 5, 2014 4:41 PM
    More than 4,000 prom dresses made their way from Northbrook to a disadvantaged area of Chicago Saturday morning — the result of donations made by suburban students, businesses and civic organizations. As it has since 1999, Zengeler Cleaners’ Northbrook headquarters took responsibility for gathering, storing, repairing, cleaning and ultimately delivering the dresses. “There’s girls in tears. There’s a lot of joy,” Tom Zengler said.

     
  • Sustained effort lifts Lake Forest past Carmel Apr 3, 2014 10:22 PM
    Keeping your focus can go a long way toward success. Not keeping it can have the opposite effect, as Carmel Catholic’s girls soccer team demonstrated Thursday afternoon. The Corsairs were right in the match with the Scouts before letting the game slip away from them in the second half. Thus Carmel Catholic lost to visiting Lake Forest 2-0 in a nonconference game in Mundelein.

    In the wake of concerns raised by city and suburban high schools, a new social-networking app that allows users to post comments anonymously has reportedly been shut down temporarily in the Chicago area. The makers of Yik Yak said that while the app is disabled they will look for ways to ensure it is not used in high schools or middle schools.

    Highland Park, the sixth seed in the Lake Zurich Sectional, pulled off the upset. The Giants (21-7) led from start to finish and beat the Scouts 48-39. Next Wednesday, the Giants will meet Fremd in Lake Zurich.

    When the final shot attempt from Lake Forest senior Noah Karras hit the front of the rim with the clock about to expire, only then could Stevenson junior standout Jalen Brunson truly appreciate the magnitude of his night, and of what he and his team accomplished. Friday night in the North Suburban Lake Division finale between the Patriots and host Scouts, Brunson and Lake Forest junior Evan Boudreaux had games that no one in the overflow crowd at Lake Forest will ever forget. In front of a high-profile coaching audience that featured Michigan coach John Beilein, Purdue coach Matt Painter and Indiana coach Tom Crean, Brunson went for a single-game school record 56 points — and the Patriots needed every one of them in a heart-pounding 95-93 win over Lake Forest. Brunson’s record setting night also put him atop the all-time scoring list at Stevenson, passing Chris Coleman. Brunson now has 1,642 points and counting.

     
  • Lake Forest outlasts St. Viator in OT Feb 8, 2014 9:20 PM
    It was Ore time, part three, in Lake Forest on Saturday. But the ending wasnít quite as satisfying. For the third time in the last four weeks, St. Viatorís Ore Arogundade either won the game or sent it into overtime with a last-second shot. Saturday it was 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 74. But unlike in the other two games, the Lions did not come out on top as Lake Forest outscored St. Viator 13-4 in the extra session to post an 87-78 victory.
