Davis delights, Reckert’s a hit in another Mundelein win Apr 3, 2013 12:00 AM
Eric Davis threw a five-inning no-hitter, and Logan Reckert's 3-run pinch-hit double highlighted Mundelein's North Suburban Lake Division victory over visiting Lake Forest. The Mustangs' 10-0 win hiked their record to — fittingly — 10-0. They're 2-0 in the NSC Lake.

Defensive stand lifts Mundelein Mar 1, 2013 12:00 AM
High-octane offense is the calling card for Mundelein boys basketball. But the Mustangs’ grit and determination on defense led to an historic moment for their program in Friday night’s Class 4A regional championship game at Lake Zurich. Shutting out fourth-seed and North Suburban Lake rival Lake Forest in the final 2:22 gave No. 5 Mundelein the opportunity to come back and claim a third straight regional title for the first time with a 59-56 victory.

Downey, Boudreaux help Lake Forest stop Hersey Feb 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Hersey had no answer for the 1-2 punch of Lake Forest’s Sam Downey and Evan Boudreaux as the Huskies were bounced from the Class 4A postseason with a 69-45 regional semifinal loss Wednesday at Lake Zurich. “They are both really good and very long,” Hersey coach Steve Messer said. “I felt that we were a step late on the boards. We needed wing help, and it just wasn’t there.” Lake Forest will meet Mundelein, a 66-46 winner over Lake Zurich, in Friday’s regional final.

Groovy: Winning rhythms at Vernon Hills Feb 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The Black Eyed Peas’ still-cool, blood-pumping “I Gotta Feeling” blared during a break in the Vernon Hills boys swimming and diving sectional. The tune, however, seemed superfluous. Super swimming sufficed. “We don’t need no music for this,” said a smiling Libertyville junior Bobby Snader, standing poolside after he and teammates Justin Fu, Atticus Rush and Eric Boynton ripped off a 1:26.94 to win the 200 free relay.

Rolling Meadows gets its timing back, tops Lake Forest Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
The weight of a pair of overtime losses to end the regular season was compounded for Rolling Meadows with a wait of nearly a week to play another game. The Mustangs showed how eager they were to get back on the winning track in Tuesday night’s Mundelein Class 4A girls basketball regional semifinal. The top seed in the Libertyville sectional tore out to a 57-point halftime lead, allowed only 12 points through three quarters and hit 12 3-pointers to improve to 25-3 with an 81-25 victory over No. 18 Lake Forest (8-22).

This time, Lake Forest meets Mundelein’s challenge Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Mundelein girls basketball coach Brian Evans knew his team faced a scary scenario similar to what the boys team just experienced Friday night. Evans watched as Libertyville avenged a 36-point loss against the Mustangs' boys. Now his 16th-seeded team was opening Class 4A regional play at home against an 18th-seeded Lake Forest team it beat by 28 points three weeks ago. But Lake Forest (8-21) avenged that loss and another early in the season by 2 points by holding on for 36-33 quarterfinal victory Monday night.

Black sets the pace as Stevenson, LF share NSC crown Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
In Saturday's North Suburban Conference boys swimming meet, Mundelein's Connor Black broke the 100 butterfly pool record set in 1994 by Tucker Shade of Decatur MacArthur in a quick 48.76. Host Lake Forest (286) edged Stevenson (283) in the team standings, meaning those teams share the overall conference championship.

Count it: Brunson, Pats win again Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
If Stevenson sophomore Jalen Brunson calls it a dunk, it must have been a dunk. In any case, it was about the only questionable play from Brunson in the Patriots’ North Suburban Lake contest with Lake Forest on Friday night. The play from Brunson helped Stevenson to a 12-point lead, and even though the “dunk,” his third of the season, front-rimmed before eventually going down, it was a key 2 points for the Patriots. “Yeah, that was a dunk,” Patriots sophomore Connor Cashaw said with a smile. “It was a great play.” Whether it was a clean dunk or not, it was just one out of several spectacular plays for Brunson in the second half. He scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and Stevenson never trailed in defeating the Scouts for the second time this season 59-50.

Another Austin buzzer-beater lifts Warren Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Trailing 39-29 with 5:24 to play, the odds were stacked against the Warren boys basketball team Friday night at Lake Forest. But the “never-say-die” Blue Devils somehow managed to pull out a miraculous and unlikely 48-46 North Suburban Lake Division victory over the Scouts with a familiar guard playing the role of hero for the second straight game. One of 2 free throw by Lake Forest’s Sam Downey gave the Scouts a 46-42 lead with 9.2 seconds to play. Warren senior Derek Mason hit his second 3-pointer to cut the gap to 46-45 with four seconds remaining. Then came the unthinkable as Warren’s Adrian Deere drew an offensive foul on Carter Bass in the backcourt to give the Blue Devils the ball under their own basket with four seconds still left. With Bass fouled out, Warren had time for a brief huddle to set up what proved to be the winning play, and for the second straight game senior guard Aarias Austin hit a 3-pointer to win the game and set off a wild celebration by the Blue Devils’ squad.
