  • This time, Lake Forest meets Mundelein’s challenge Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Mundelein girls basketball coach Brian Evans knew his team faced a scary scenario similar to what the boys team just experienced Friday night. Evans watched as Libertyville avenged a 36-point loss against the Mustangs' boys. Now his 16th-seeded team was opening Class 4A regional play at home against an 18th-seeded Lake Forest team it beat by 28 points three weeks ago. But Lake Forest (8-21) avenged that loss and another early in the season by 2 points by holding on for 36-33 quarterfinal victory Monday night.

Black sets the pace as Stevenson, LF share NSC crown Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
In Saturday's North Suburban Conference boys swimming meet, Mundelein's Connor Black broke the 100 butterfly pool record set in 1994 by Tucker Shade of Decatur MacArthur in a quick 48.76. Host Lake Forest (286) edged Stevenson (283) in the team standings, meaning those teams share the overall conference championship.

  • Count it: Brunson, Pats win again Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
If Stevenson sophomore Jalen Brunson calls it a dunk, it must have been a dunk. In any case, it was about the only questionable play from Brunson in the Patriots’ North Suburban Lake contest with Lake Forest on Friday night. The play from Brunson helped Stevenson to a 12-point lead, and even though the “dunk,” his third of the season, front-rimmed before eventually going down, it was a key 2 points for the Patriots. “Yeah, that was a dunk,” Patriots sophomore Connor Cashaw said with a smile. “It was a great play.” Whether it was a clean dunk or not, it was just one out of several spectacular plays for Brunson in the second half. He scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and Stevenson never trailed in defeating the Scouts for the second time this season 59-50.

  • Vernon Hills’ Tran takes next step Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Alli Tran had unfinished business to care of at Lake Forest on Saturday . Vernon Hills’ star gymnast had never won a regional championship. She changed that by posting a winning 37.15 in the all-around.

  • Another Austin buzzer-beater lifts Warren Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
Trailing 39-29 with 5:24 to play, the odds were stacked against the Warren boys basketball team Friday night at Lake Forest. But the “never-say-die” Blue Devils somehow managed to pull out a miraculous and unlikely 48-46 North Suburban Lake Division victory over the Scouts with a familiar guard playing the role of hero for the second straight game. One of 2 free throw by Lake Forest’s Sam Downey gave the Scouts a 46-42 lead with 9.2 seconds to play. Warren senior Derek Mason hit his second 3-pointer to cut the gap to 46-45 with four seconds remaining. Then came the unthinkable as Warren’s Adrian Deere drew an offensive foul on Carter Bass in the backcourt to give the Blue Devils the ball under their own basket with four seconds still left. With Bass fouled out, Warren had time for a brief huddle to set up what proved to be the winning play, and for the second straight game senior guard Aarias Austin hit a 3-pointer to win the game and set off a wild celebration by the Blue Devils’ squad.

Suburban teams advance in state dance competition Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Suburban high schools are well-represented among the 30 competitive dance teams heading into the IHSA's first state championships on Saturday in Bloomington. Ninety schools competed Friday, but only one-third of them are alive going into the finals.

  • Mundelein leaves it all on the floor in victory Jan 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The surprise, a mouthful of it, was sour. Fortunately for Sean O’Brien, victory always tastes sweet. Mundelein’s 6-foot-7 senior may have thrown up more than a missed shot at the end of the first half against visiting Lake Forest, but he and his teammates left their own gym with a good taste in their mouths after pulling out a 62-56 win in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division thriller Thursday night.

  • St. Viator’s Mark Falotico takes a shot during Tuesday’s game against Lake Forest.

Boudreaux, Lake Forest measure up at St. Viator Jan 22, 2013 12:00 AM
For three and a half quarters, Lake Forest used size to its advantage, controlling the paint on both offense and defense. St. Viator flipped the script for a short period late in cutting a 16-point fourth quarter deficit down to 6, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as 6-foot-7 Evan Boudreaux scored a game-high 25 points and 6-foot-9 Sam Downey added 17 points in Lake Forest’s 66-53 victory in Arlington Heights.

Poms teams across the state took their activity to a new level on Saturday, when they participated in the first round of the state series in competitive dance, sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association. "We had our fingers crossed, since we didn't know what the judges would be looking for," said Sue Kawecki, coach of the Maine East Demon Squad, that also advanced at the Palatine sectional, with a kick routine.

  • Boudreaux, Lake Forest roll again Jan 12, 2013 12:00 AM
So much for that ankle injury that Lake Forest sophomore forward Evan Boudreaux suffered three weeks ago. Boudreaux scored 31 points to lift Lake Forest’s boys basketball team to an 86-59 win over host Grant in a North Suburban Conference crossover Saturday night. Boudreaux scored 22 points against Lake Zurich on Friday.

  • Boudreaux sparks Lake Forest past Lake Zurich Jan 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Normally when a basketball player misses a month or more due to an ankle injury, the return is gradual. A 22-point, 7-rebound night is anything but gradual, but then, Lake Forest sophomore Evan Boudreaux isn’t exactly your average player. He missed the last month for the Scouts with a badly sprained ankle. But in his first game back, in a key North Suburban Conference road contest at Lake Zurich, Boudreaux looked like he hadn’t missed a minute. Boudreaux teamed with Yale-bound senior Sam Downey, who chipped in 21 points and 7 rebounds of his own, to down the Bears 59-44. The loss snapped Lake Zurich’s three-game winning streak.

  • Carmel’s sharp, Prairie Ridge sharper at Lake Forest Jan 5, 2013 12:00 AM
The three-time defending state champion Carmel Catholic girls gymnastics team started out 2013 with one of its best scores of the season, a 145.625. Not bad at all for a team trying to rejoin the state's elite with a mostly new crew at next month's state meet at Palatine High School. But on Saturday at Lake Forest, the Corsairs found a pair of teams ahead of them in that process as the Corsairs managed a third-place finish behind Prairie Ridge (150) and Lyons (149.675), who also posted season-best scores.

  • Carmel shows finishing flair Dec 28, 2012 12:00 AM
In danger of losing to a team with only half as many wins as it had earned this season, and on the verge of dropping its first game in the Blue Devil Classic, Carmel finally got its act together in the fourth quarter Friday night. Scoring more points in that last stanza (21) than they had put on the board in the entire first half, the Corsairs pulled away for a 49-39 victory over Lake Forest. It marked Carmel's fourth triumph in four games in the tournament, while the Scouts fell to 2-2 in tourney play.

Miller, Grayslake Central find winning identity Dec 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Maddy Miller scored 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, hustled for 6 rebounds and dished out 2 assists in Grayslake Central's 47-29 win over Lake Forest in the opening game of Warren's Blue Devil Classic. The junior forward/guard shouldn't be confused with the Maddy Miller who was a starting guard on the Rams' sectional championship team two years ago.

Brunson, Stevenson power past Lake ForestDec 18, 2012 12:00 AM
Stevenson boys basketball coach Pat Ambrose emerged from an emotional postgame talk with his players short of breath, his tie loosened and his hair a bit sloppy. A mentally and physically draining season for the Patriots continued Tuesday night, and this time there were only things to celebrate. Stevenson’s 59-53 victory over host Lake Forest in a key North Suburban Lake Division battle — highlighted by sophomore point guard Jalen Brunson’s career-high 35 points — was just one reason why smiles were pouring out of the visitors locker room.
