    Vernon Hills’ boys volleyball team netted its 30th win of the season and earned a regional final berth Tuesday night. It wasn’t easy, however. The fourth-seed Cougars outlasted No. 14 Lake Forest 25-19, 25-23 in a regional semifinal at Vernon Hills, as Max Spiglanin and Michael Heinz each pounded 7 kills, while Lemuel Turner added five.

    Tanner Kiser received a mini-celebratory dousing of small cups of water over his head from a couple of Lake Zurich baseball teammates late Monday afternoon. Maybe they wanted to make sure the left-handed hitting first baseman didn't cool off too much. Not after the only thing that may have prevented him from hitting for the cycle was not getting a fourth at-bat in the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional quarterfinal against Prospect. Kiser homered, tripled and doubled and drove in 5 runs and cleanup man Anthony Drago went 3-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBI as the 14th-seeded Bears (15-16) stayed hot and extended their winning streak to 5 games as they rolled 13-0 in 5 innings.

Antioch volleyball coach Jamie Atkinson wasn't shy about admitting what a fine group of seniors she had to say so long to at the Lake Zurich regional on Monday night. She had some teary good-byes to make to those Sequoits following a competitive regional opener. The home-standing Bears prevailed 25-20, 25-22 to advance to Tuesday's regional semifinal match with a strong Deerfield club.

    Warren sophomore Brittny Ellis is back in the running for a state title. Or, rather two state titles, as she advanced near the front of the pack in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in Class 3A. Ellis won her qualifying 400 qualifying heat in 55.18 on Friday in the girls track and field state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University.

Dalan fell and dropped the baton as she approached Majer for the handoff, and had to retrieve it while Majer waited in her lane.
