The Oakton Community College board of trustees seated new members and officers for 2013-14 earlier this month. Joan W. DiLeonardi, of Des Plaines, who was re-elected for a six-year term in April, was named the new chair, replacing Jody Wadhwa of Northbrook.

Suburban education officials are worried looming federal changes to GED testing will leave those less fortunate with one less path to joining the workforce. The test will become computerized in 2014, and the price to take the exam will more than double. Plus, you need a credit card and an email address. "It’s going to be people with the least resources who are going to be left out," Josh Boies of Kane County says.

Harper approves $2 per credit hour tuition increaseFeb 28, 2013 12:00 AM
Consistent with a regional trend among community colleges, Harper College will ask its students to dig a little deeper into their pockets for the cost of a high education. The board of trustees last week unanimously approved increasing tuition by $2 per credit hour beginning in the summer 2013 term. For a full-time student taking 30 credit hours annually, that’s an additional $60 for a total of $3,735.
