A Hoffman Estates man pleaded guilty Monday to predatory criminal sexual assault of a minor and two counts of child pornography. In exchange for John Agresta's guilty pleas, Cook County Judge Ellen Mandletort sentenced him to a total of 35 years, acknowledging that he has a Kendall County case pending that will tack another 10 years onto his sentence.

Higher rates drove some motorists away from the Illinois tollway in the first quarter of 2012, statistics released Wednesday indicate. There were about 4 million fewer passenger vehicle transactions January through March as a result of tolls nearly doubling on Jan. 1. In the first quarter of 2011, 169 million passenger transactions occurred compared to 165 million this year, a 2.4 percent drop, the agency reported.

Woman who killed 5 Oswego teens in 2007 DUI crash appeals sentence May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
An Aurora woman in prison for killing five Oswego teens in a 2007 drunken driving crash has appealed her sentence. She argued that a state statute that allows a judge to consider probation in a multiple-fatality DUI crash is unconstitutionally vague. Sandra Vasquez, 28, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and at one time faced up to 28 years in prison.

Contestants are heeding the call to compete in Suburban Chicago's Got Talent, a summer-long talent contest co-sponsored by the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce and the Daily Herald. More than 50 performers have signed up since the competition was launched last Friday. “We've had a great response so far,” said Metropolis executive director Charlie Beck. “We're very comfortable that we'll hit our numbers.”

An Aurora man is behind bars after he attempted to film a woman in a bathroom at Waubonsee Community Colleges Aurora campus, college officials said. Jason Whitson, 41, 100 block of West Galena Boulevard, was charged with unauthorized video recording and disorderly conduct after he was arrested Friday by campus police, said Jeff Noblitt, communications director at the college.

A new era is near in Kane County as a committee has recommended the 16th Judicial Circuit move forward and apply for cameras in courtrooms. The state's Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that cameras could be allowed in an experimental, circuit-by-circuit basis.
