Fate of charter appeal uncertainMay 29, 2013 12:00 AM
When Governor Pat Quinn signed a one-year moratorium on the establishment of new virtual charter schools into law, suburban administrators expected an end to the appeal process currently under way for one such school. But that may not be the case. Attorneys on one side argue the commission has a legal responsibility to complete the appeal while those on the other side say the commission no longer has authority to approve the virtual charter school. A decision is expected this week.

Kaneland bullying report falls short for some board members May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
An update on what a task force has been doing to address bullying in Kaneland schools got a mixed reception from the school board Wednesday. Two members criticized the task force for not having any students on it, and only one parent. And one of those board members also said he was "disappointed" in the work, because the actions recommended were not based on Kaneland-specific data about bullying.

Funeral arrangements have been set for a seventh-grader from Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove who was killed while rollerblading at the end of last week. Visitation for Caitlyn Phillips, 13, of Elburn, will take place from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Calvary West Church, 1600 Beta Drive, in Sugar Grove.

The organizers behind a proposed online charter school Friday released a 1,018-page answer to the questions posed by members of the 18 school districts that have to vote on the request. Several of the boards, including Geneva and Kaneland, are due to vote on the proposal as soon as Monday.

The number of students receiving free lunches in the Kaneland school district this year has increased dramatically. But much of the growth comes from the district participating in a pilot program, wherein students whose families receive TANF or SNAP benefits are automatically enrolled for free lunches.

Schuler gets raise in 6-1 vote Feb 26, 2013 12:00 AM
The Kaneland school board gave Superintendent Jeff Schuler a nearly 11 percent raise Monday night, with only board member Tony Valente voting against it. "I thought that it was hard to ask the community to pay more ... without getting programs back," such as activity busing and librarians for every school.

Kaneland Unit District 302 is one of 539 school districts across 44 of the 50 states in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the third annual AP District Honor Roll. Kaneland High School Principal Chip Hickman said, "This is a tremendous achievement for our high school. Our student's commitment to high achievement is evident through this honor and the leadership of our instructional staff has been inspirational."
