Kaneland's Goress reaches final Feb 15, 2013 12:00 AM
With its rich tradition in the sport of wrestling, Marmion Academy, and several of its wrestlers, have cornered the lion's share of publicity during the past few seasons. But Kaneland senior Dan Goress (145, 40-3) found a way to make a dent in the Cadets' overall press coverage Friday night with his latest work, a remarkable 6-minute performance during the semfinals of the state tournament to advance into tonight's final against Michael Sepke (36-9) after a hard-fought, and well deserved 5-3 triumph over Chase Vosburgh (40-2) of Mt. Vernon.

For a team that clinched its second Northern Illinois Big XII title in three years, Kaneland walked out of the Morris gym Friday night with one glum face after another. While the Knights watched an 11-point third quarter lead disappear as Morris got hot from 3-point range to win 50-46, it was Kaneland who earned at least a share of the conference championship when second-place Sycamore lost to Rochelle.

Marmion, Kaneland off to strong starts at state Feb 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Jake Field drew a blank in his sectional final last weekend. A late 5-point swing turned around what looked like championship finish, but instead turned into a 13-12 defeat to Nick Gasbarro of Marist. One week later, the Marmion senior was playing it close once again, this time with Terry Calkins (Maine South, 31-5) only this time, he closed out a more important match with a fall at 5:53 to book a spot opposite No. 2 Jordan Northrup (Harlem, 41-1) in a 126-pound quarterfinal bout at the 76th state wrestling championships.

Kaneland's comeback falls 1 point short Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Kaneland's frenetic fourth quarter comeback attempt contained everything imaginable — except for the fantastic finish. The Lady Knights whittled Plano's seemingly insurmountable 15-point lead down to a single point and had possession with 17 seconds left in Wednesday's Class 3A Burlington Central regional semifinal. After Plano's 6-foot-4 center Clarissa Martinez blocked Emma Bradford's potential game-winning shot out of bounds with 1.5 seconds left, Kaneland drew up one final play Allyson O'Herron got a clean look at a 3-pointer from the bow, but it came off the front of the rim and No. 2 seed Plano held on for a dramatic 52-51 victory.

O’Herron drained six 3-pointers in totaling a game-high 20 points in the third-seeded Knights’ 50-14 drubbing of the Indians.

Ruggles, Wheaton Academy stop Kaneland Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Just ask Wheaton Academy senior Cole Fritz why classmate Brandon Ruggles leads DuPage County in rebounding. “He’s just a horse,” Fritz said of Ruggles. He outworks everyone in there. Playing against him in practice, I hate rebounding against him because I know he’s going to work as hard as he can to get that board. And he takes a ton of charges. I think he has over 30 charges.”

The Kaneland boys basketball is seeking a second consecutive conference championship. But visiting DeKalb, which had not won this calendar year, truly upset the apple cart for the Knights’ repeat bid in the Northern Illinois Big XII East Friday night. The Barb hit 8 of 14 third-quarter shots, more than doubling their first-half output in the process, and never relinquished an 8-point lead to start the final quarter in denying the Knights 50-45 in Maple Park.
