Youthful St. Charles North searching for consistency May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perhaps St. Charles North baseball coach Todd Genke should have figured this would be a challenging season when the team's annual trip to downstate Marion was shortened due to a late-March snowstorm. Whatever the case, it definitely has not been business as usual for the North Stars this season.

  • FieldTurf making East Side Complex a popular place Apr 30, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a number of advantages in being a resident of St. Charles. Both of the city's high schools — St. Charles North (21st) and St. Charles East (39th) — were recently named to the "Top 50" annual list published by U.S. News & World Report that ranks each state's high schools. They were the only 2 Kane County high schools to make the list. Both high schools were also recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Expected to be good, Batavia baseball, Saints softball better than advertised Apr 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Prior to the start of the high school — I can't wait until it actually starts feeling like — spring season, two local teams were included among the annual preview stories. Nothing fancy, nothing new. Overlooked by some, Batavia's baseball team began its season last month with a game that wasn't even listed on its original schedule.

  • St. Charles East shuts out Kaneland Apr 13, 2013 12:00 AM
It takes something out of the ordinary to beat Kaneland keeper Jordan Ginther. On Saturday, for 77 minutes, the only shot St. Charles East was able to put past the Knights shot-stopping superstar was a ball that hit Shannon Rasmussen in the face and redirected into the net within the opening 2 minutes of play. "Their keeper is fantastic and we knew that before the game started," Rasmussen said. "We had a bunch of chances but we couldn't put it away. We kept hitting it straight at her or taking really far-out shots." Rasmussen scored the other goal of the match with three minutes left when she placed a quickly-taken free kick into the right side netting. The 2-0 nonconference victory is the Saints' fourth in a row and continues a 10-match unbeaten run that started with the second match of the season. St. Charles East enters Tuesday's key matchup with crosstown rival St. Charles North 9-1-1.

  • Kaneland comes back to upend Rochelle Apr 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Kaneland started its quest for a fourth straight Northern Illinois Big XII title Tuesday by overcoming what had been its biggest problem in its nonconference games. Struggling to get their offense on track, the Knights found a way to put three runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning without a hit. Those three runs proved to be the difference in a 6-4 win over Rochelle.

  • Kaneland’s Lexi Roach is tagged out at second base by Batavia’s Alex Scaccia in the first inning on Saturday, April 6.

Eckert, Kaneland continue fast start Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Ellissa Eckert is making life easier for the Kaneland softball team, and her teammates sure made her job easier Saturday at Batavia. Coming into the season with a number of experienced and talented hitters, one of the few question marks for the 2013 Knights would who would replace 20-game winner Delani Vest in the circle. With a 4-0 record through Kaneland's first seven games, Eckert certainly has given the Knights just the pitcher they needed. And with 11 runs in the first inning Saturday, those Knights gave Eckert what every pitcher would want — a double-digit lead before she even tossed a pitch. Kaneland coasted from there to a 17-1 victory, improving its record to 6-1 as it gets ready to start playing more Northern Illinois Big XII games in defense of its conference championship.

Kathryn Kat' Warner received a humbling dose of reality when arriving at East Carolina University in Greenville, S.C. to continue her track and field career at the next level. "It is a whole different world compared to a high school setting," said Warner, a 2010 Batavia graduate who shook off nearly two years of injuries to win the Class 3A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles as a senior. "Once you enter the college world (in track and field), everyone is a state champion." Warner is one of five former state champions from the area in track and field currently competing at the collegiate level.

Scouting Tri-Cities area boys volleyball teamsMar 22, 2013 12:00 AM
In just its second year with a boys volleyball program in 2012, Geneva went 17-12 and tied St. Charles East for the Upstate Eight Conference River title. While starting a team can often lead to years of growing pains and losing seasons, Vikings coach KC Johnsen thinks he knows why the Vikings have been successful so quickly. "We've been lucky that some really good athletes have decided to give volleyball a try," Johnsen said. "That makes a lot of difference. They pick it up very fast and move well on the court and are competitive guys and jump a little bit. Makes it a quicker jump start. (We wouldn't have won so fast) if we didn't have such good athletes."
