    A sudden burst of energy from Nickai Poyser turned a potential close game into a rout. Visiting Joliet Catholic had pulled to within 21-16 when the Carmel Catholic junior came off the bench early in the third quarter. Poyser proceeded to deliver 7 points, 2 blocked shots, 1 rebound and 1 assist in less than six minutes of third-quarter action to propel the Corsairs to a 42-20 victory Friday night in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

    ‘War’ wins for Montini Nov 17, 2012 12:00 AM
    Down 3 to Joliet Catholic. Thirty-five seconds left. Montini ball on the Hilltoppers' 1-yard line. This meant War. Joey Borsellino, who 20 seconds earlier saved Montini's season on a fourth-down conversion, got the play call from his father, Lewis, the Broncos' offensive coordinator. "War," it was — quarterback tucked tight under center. Get low. Everybody push. "He said, Go under center. All you need is 1 yard and we'll go to state,'" Joey Borsellino said. "I was like, All right, I'll get 1 yard, Dad.' We did. It was great." The all-state senior handled Pat Strzempek's quick snap and, flanked by guards Tate Briggs and Anthony Ferraro, they burrowed in to give Montini a 40-37 Class 5A semifinal win Saturday at Joliet Memorial Stadium and a shot at a fourth straight state title.

    St. Francis tops Joliet Catholic in three games Nov 1, 2012 12:00 AM
    McKenna Kelsay cried tears of joy and rushed into a proud hug from her dad. Another classic St. Francis-Joliet Catholic match, and it didn't disappoint. St. Francis turned away two match points and Joliet Catholic four, the Spartans surviving for a 25-15, 24-26, 30-28 victory in front of a huge, raucous crowd at Thursday's Class 3A Glenbard South sectional final.

     
  • Isaac, Joliet Catholic meet St. Viator’s challenge Sep 7, 2012 12:00 AM
    Ty Isaac's doctor may have won a football game on Friday night at Forest View Stadium in Arlington Heights. Isaac sure won one for his Joliet Catholic football team against a St. Viator team that was persistent to the end. Isaac, a senior tailback committed to USC, wasn't expected to play while still recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in the season opener. "The biggest surprise tonight was when the doctor gave Ty the clearance," said Joliet Catholic coach Dan Sharp after his team survived 33-20 in the East Suburban Catholic opener. "He wasn't going to play at all, but obviously he was in my ear when he got the OK." And then he was in the Lions' backfield, seemingly rushing effortlessly for 100 yards on 9 carries, the first coming late in the second quarter.

    Historic night of firsts for St. Viator Feb 16, 2012 12:00 AM
    The team-first concept was on display again for St. Viator as it wrapped up the first outright boys basketball conference title in school history with a 67-40 East Suburban Catholic Conference win over Joliet Catholic. Kevin Walsh had 17 points, Chris Myjak scored 15 and D.J. Morris had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the 22-3 Lions.

    One day after torching the nets for 92 points in a blowout victory, Aurora Christian’s basketball team struggled to reach the 50-point mark Saturday night. Shooting just 19 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (8-of-41) while failing to muster much of an inside game, the Eagles (3-1) suffered a 64-50 loss at the hands of tournament champion Joliet Catholic (3-3) in the inaugural Burney Wilkie Classic held in Aurora.

The last four ESCC races have ended with defending champ Carmel and perennial powerhouse Joliet Catholic in the top two spots.
