Grayslake Central makes its own luck in triumph May 2, 2012 12:00 AM
The quest for No. 13 started off predictably. Luck didnt seem to be on Grayslake Centrals side. The Rams were going for their 13th consecutive win on Wednesday and found themselves down 4 runs before they could say superstition. Visiting Johnsburg put up 4 runs on 4 hits in the in the top of the first inning. But what was also predictable for the Rams was getting down early in the first place. Theyve done that frequently this season. Theyve also frequently come from behind to win many of those games, and the Johnsburg game was no exception. The Rams coolly and quickly put their 4-run deficit in the rearview mirror and scored 11 runs over the first three innings en route to a 14-5 victory over Johnsburg. Grayslake Central improves to 19-5 overall and is in the drivers seat in the race for a Fox Valley Conference divisional title with a 12-1 league record.

Grayslake Central rolls by Johnsburg Feb 17, 2012 12:00 AM
A flailing hand caught Skyler Jessop in the face late in the third quarter, dazed Grayslake Central’s rugged senior and ended her night prematurely. Small lump aside, it was nothing to worry about. “She’s fine. She just got a little love tap in the head,” Rams coach Steve Ikenn said with a laugh. “She was coming out (permanently) in like 30 seconds anyway.” Johnsburg’s night ended much earlier Friday. Grayslake Central scored the game’s first dozen points, held its opponent scoreless until 25 seconds remained in the opening quarter and cruised to a 43-18 win in the teams’ Class 3A regional final at Wauconda.

Berge, Johnsburg ground Wauconda Feb 15, 2012 12:00 AM
It was a basketball game, but Morgan Berge looked like a track star, and a football player, too. The senior guard from Johnsburg sprinted behind Wauconda’s fullcourt defense Wednesday night and did her best wide receiver impression to haul in a long pass that sailed nearly half the length of the court. When she came down with the ball, she turned on the jets again to get herself quickly to the basket. “Her speed changes a lot of things,” Johnsburg coach Brad Frey said of Berge. “You get her in the open floor and there’s not a lot of people who can catch her. Berge’s ensuing layup essentially made Johnsburg uncatchable. It extended the Skyhawks’ tenuous 2-point lead to 4 points with just under a minute to play. It also gave Johnsburg the momentum to ultimately close out a 38-32 regional semifinal victory on Wauconda’s home floor.

Dundee-Crown holds off Johnsburg Jan 4, 2012 12:00 AM
Just when it appeared that Dundee-Crown was on its way to an easy win, the Johnsburg Skyhawks showed up. Pressing and trapping relentlessly, Johnsburg created turnovers and turned them into easy baskets. In all, the Skyhawks scored 15 straight points to cut a 20-point Chargers’ lead to 46-41 with just under 4 minutes left. But after a well-timed timeout by coach Lance Huber, the Chargers steadied themselves and pulled away to a 59-41 win in a Fox Valley Conference crossover boys basketball game in Carpentersville Wednesday night.
