Behind a late-game 8-1 run, Johnsburg (28-3) held off a furious effort by St. Viator in the Lions' own Class 3A girls basketball sectional final. The Skyhawks posted a 38-32 triumph in Arlington Heights to capture their fourth Class 3A sectional crown.

Burlington Central and Johnsburg went back and forth, but the Rockets had the ball last. And they took full advantage. Ethan Mayfield hit the game-winning jumper as time expired to give the Rockets a 58-56 win in Big Northern East boys basketball action in Burlington Friday night.

Without their full varsity lineups intact, it turned out to be a challenge for St. Viator and the host Panthers Saturday at the Round Lake wrestling triple dual. But in spite of having basically a split squad against Round Lake and Grayslake North, St. Viator came away with a 1-2 record.

Johnsburg came into its battle of Big Northern East girls basketball unbeatens at Burlington Central Tuesday with a sparkling 15-1 record. The Rockets made the Skyhawks look like an overwhelmed 1-15 team.
Bartlett pulls away from Johnsburg

The answer to getting back on the winning track for Bartlett's boys basketball team has actually been quite simple. It was just a matter of getting back to the basics. After an opening day loss in the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs and its fourth straight loss overall on Saturday Bartlett has bounced back with a pair of wins. The Hawks beat Johnsburg 49-37 in the early morning game on Tuesday to finish 2-1 in pool play.

With Johnsburg's zone defense collapsing on Jacobs junior standout center Cameron Krutwig, the Golden Eagles were able to get an abundance of open 3-point opportunities. Junior Cooper Schwartz took advantage of the open shots, connecting of 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. He scored 17 points to lead Jacobs to a hard-fought 50-35 win over the Skyhawks in second round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs in Algonquin Monday night.
