  • Burlington Central notches 33rd straight league win Jan 27, 2015 10:49 PM
Johnsburg’s girls basketball team came into Burlington Central’s gym Tuesday night with upset on its mind. And why not? The Skyhawks were 8-1 in the Big Northern East and if they could pull off the unexpected it would likely mean tying for the division championship. For the better part of the first half Johnsburg kept pace with the Rockets before falling behind by 8 points at halftime. Then came the third quarter. The Rockets, ranked No. 10 in the AP Class 3A state poll this week, blasted out of the second-half gate with an apparent sense of urgency to let their visitors know they intend to win the BN-East outright for the third straight year. BC outscored the Skyhawks 28-4 in the third quarter, eventually cruising to a 55-24 win.

  • Johnsburg’s heady play too much for Grant Jan 12, 2015 10:31 PM
Usually, the Johnsburg girls basketball team is in good shape when at least a third of its three-headed monster is playing scary good. On Monday, Grant had to be downright spooked. The Skyhawks got extra big games out of two of their three big guns and the third was right on the verge. Guard Aannah Interrante scored a game-high 24 points on 5 three-pointers while teammate and 6-foot center Jazza Johns had 18 points to lead visiting Johnsburg to a 58-46 nonconference victory over Grant. Forward Trace Chase, the third head to the monster, finished with 9 points.

  • Johnsburg has the advantage against Wauconda Dec 22, 2014 7:09 PM
After his girls basketball team had three players grab a combined 31 rebounds, Johnsburg coach Brad Frey noted the prowess on the boards. Not necessarily that of his Skyhawks, however. Rather, Wauconda’s rebounding impressed him. “Ours are because we’re tall,” Frey said with a smile. “Theirs are because they go after it and get it.” Johnsburg pulled away from Wauconda to capture a 54-42 win at Richmond-Burton on Day 3 of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic on Monday. The Skyhawks’ contributors included 5-foot-11 Jazza Johns (7 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks), 5-10 Trace Chase (game highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds), 5-10 Carly Wilson (4 points, 7 rebounds), 5-10 freshman Kayla Stefka (6 rebounds) and freshman guard Aannah Interrante (12 points, three 3-pointers).

  • South Elgin bounces back to top Johnsburg Dec 22, 2014 6:29 PM
The South Elgin boys basketball team proved to be a resilient group on Monday. After losing by 22 points to Barrington in the opening round of the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs on Saturday, the Storm bounced back with a strong start against Johnsburg and then held on for a 56-49 victory. Matt Smith led South Elgin with 16 points. Justin Howard added 11.

  • Burlington Central shuts down Johnsburg Dec 12, 2014 10:50 PM
Zach Schutta has the perfect sounding name for a player a team wants to come in off the bench and provide an offensive spark. But the Burlington Central freshman sixth man showed he is more than just a shooter. Schutta and senior Drew Wiss also provided some shutdown defense in Friday night’s 47-39 Big Northern East boys basketball victory at Johnsburg.

It’s a new era for St. Viator girls basketball. Wednesday night was its official start at the school’s Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. After playing its first five games in Carpentersville (Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament), the Lions were home for the first time under new coach Paul Missavage and a trio of freshmen. It proved to be a result St. Viator fans would like see to see many more times in the future. Led by 5-foot-7 freshman guard Maya Clark’s game-high 16 points, St. Viator rolled past Johnsburg 45-19 in the nonconference test.

  • Grayslake N. outpaces Johnsburg Nov 26, 2014 10:15 PM
Grayslake North tried unsuccessfully to beat Johnsburg’s zone defense with long-range shooting early in Wednesday night’s second-round game of the Richmond-Burton/Johnsburg Boys Varsity Basketball Tournament. So, the Knights came up with different plans of attack. They picked up the pace to get the lead in the second half and then patiently slowed it in the fourth quarter to hold on for a 48-45 victory in Johnsburg.

Fiedorowicz, a star at Iowa and now a rookie tight end with the Houson Texans. Dixon is a standout 3-point shooter and is hoping to lead Iowa to a Big Ten title in her senior year.

  • Aurora Central’s rally falls short at Johnsburg Nov 1, 2014 7:56 PM
That hug session went on a full half-hour. It was time to say so long to football season for the Chargers of Aurora Central Catholic. The visitors in this Class 4A playoff game in Johnsburg need not feel badly about the 42-39 loss to the once-beaten Skyhawks. Aurora Central Catholic (6-4) gave Johnsburg all it could handle and took a late 39-35 lead in the fourth quarter.

  • Johnsburg shuts down Burlington Central Oct 17, 2014 11:25 PM
With the Big Northern East title on the line, Burlington Central and Johnsburg engaged in an old-fashioned defensive battle, with Johnsburg coming out on top. The Skyhawks scored on the game’s opening possession, then used a dominating defense to hold on for a 7-0 victory on Rocket Hill Friday night. The win clinches at least a share of the BN-East for Johnsburg, which rejoined the conference just this year.

  • Ridout pitches Johnsburg past Lakes May 29, 2014 10:43 PM
As he walked toward the parking lot, Johnsburg pitcher Collin Ridout avoided a wipeout. He stopped and deftly hopped a fence in a single bound to grant an interview request. It might have been his second-best leap in his baseball cleats Thursday. And, in truth, the display of athleticism wasn’t surprising considering what the senior right-hander did on Grayslake Central’s diamond. Ridout struck out 10 Lakes batters, scattered 4 singles and fielded his position brilliantly, as the third-seeded Skyhawks won the Class 3A regional semifinal 3-0 to earn a berth in Saturday’s title game. Johnsburg (20-13) will play top-seeded Grayslake Central (25-10) at 11 a.m. Ridout outdueled fellow hard-throwing ace Chase Slota, as Lakes, which started the season 0-5, finished 19-13.

  • St. Edward ices sectional championship May 23, 2014 11:46 PM
In a general sense, the Green Wave girls soccer team may badly need some ice tubs installed either at home or at St. Edward for the rest of the postseason. But you sure as heck can’t put their season on ice just yet. When the Wave look back at the beating it took to win Friday’s Class 1A Richmond-Burton sectional championship over a very physical Johnsburg 3-0, maybe the soreness, battle wounds and ice bags will be of something to be proud about.

I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.
