Zazas, Mundelein celebrate MBSA Day with sweep Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
The future Maddie Zazases watched the real Maddie Zazas zip around bases and play impeccable shortstop Saturday. Those Mundelein Baseball Softball Association girls are not that much younger than Zazas, in truth. They’ll be playing varsity before too long. “Someday,” a smiling Zazas said. “Someday. It’ll happen.” If the many little girls who watched Mundelein sweep Johnsburg in a nonconference doubleheader possess the same softball savvy as the 16-year-old Zazas, the future of Mustangs softball is bright. Mundelein celebrated its second annual MBSA Day by capturing the opening game 5-2 and then taking the second 14-4 on JV call-up Amanda Diaz’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

Carmel keeps regional title hope alive Feb 27, 2013 12:00 AM
The number 13 certainly was a number that came up a few times on Wednesday night in Norridge. In this case, it sure seemed lucky. Carmel Catholic’s boys basketball team is in pursuit of history. The last time the Corsairs won a regional final was 21 years ago. But Carmel has a shot at a regional championship this season, as the sixth-seeded Corsairs bounced No. 11 Johnsburg 57-41 in a Class 3A Ridgewood regional semifinal on Wednesday night.

Carmel tops Johnsburg for win No. 20 Feb 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Thirteen minutes into Wednesday’s night regional semifinal in Johnsburg, the heavily favored Carmel Catholic Corsairs held a 16-9 lead on the home-standing Skyhawks and the 16th seed in the Vernon Hills sectional. And then the second-seeded Corsairs went on a 15-2 run and put this Class 3A girls basketball contest away. Cassidy Kloss led a balanced attack with 12 points, as Carmel notched its 20th win of the season with a 48-30 victory.

Cullen still unbeaten; Cary-Grove 2nd in FVC Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
It was clear going into Saturday's Fox Valley Conference finals that Crystal Lake Central's five-year reign as the league wrestling champion was over. The question was, would Cary-Grove's navy and white or McHenry's black and orange be the new colors of FVC wrestling royalty. McHenry's lead wasn't safe up only 10 points after Friday's prelims but sending 13 of 14 into the semifinals to Cary-Grove's 10 didn't seem to make the Warriors nervous. The Trojans closed in early with first place wins in 2 of the first 3 matches and watched three wrestlers earn titles, but McHenry grew stronger in the heavier classes and garnered 3 first-place winners, 3 second-place winners and 4 third-place medals to grab the overall championship over Cary-Grove, 261.50-210.

Cary-Grove chasing McHenry in FVC tournament Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
McHenry put the finishing touches on a strong first day at the 2013 Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament Friday by sending 13 of 14 into today's semifinals to help keep its division rival Cary-Grove at bay when the competition came to a close at Jacobs Friday night. The top two clubs in the Valley division are separated by 10 points (90-80) when action resumes today at 9 a.m., while Crystal Lake South stands third overall with 68 points, followed closely by Huntley which is one point behind the Gators in fourth.

Poms teams compete for sectional title in Palatine Jan 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Poms teams across the state took their activity to a new level on Saturday, when they participated in the first round of the state series in competitive dance, sanctioned by the Illinois High School Association. "We had our fingers crossed, since we didn't know what the judges would be looking for," said Sue Kawecki, coach of the Maine East Demon Squad, that also advanced at the Palatine sectional, with a kick routine.

Johnsburg shoots down Grayslake C. Jan 19, 2013 12:00 AM
Five seniors started for Grayslake Central on Saturday night against visiting Johnsburg on Senior Night, including guard Danny Reed, who poured in a game-high 20 points. “It was heartwarming to see all the seniors and their parents on the gym floor before the game tonight,” said Reed, who knocked down 2 of his team’s trio of 3-pointers and connected on all 6 of his free throws. “It was a nice experience.” What wasn’t so nice for the Rams was the ability of Johnsburg to nullify the home team’s zone defense with 8 3-pointers in a 67-56 Fox Valley Fox Division game.

Hampshire’s road warriors win again Jan 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The road was friendly to the Hampshire boys basketball team once again Wednesday. Playing their eighth straight game away from home, the Whip-Purs gained separation from Johnsburg with a 19-5 run that bridged the first and second quarters and used a team effort to maintain their lead throughout an eventual 49-40 victory in the Fox Division of the Fox Valley Conference.

Roach’s approach suits LZ Jan 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Sometimes, all it takes is one shot to fall, and all the rest seem to go down from there. For Lake Zurich senior Ryan Roach, when his first shot of the second half fell, it quickly led to good things for Lake Zurich. Roach had missed his first and only attempt in the first half against Johnsburg during the 22nd annual Milwaukee Bucks Prep Basketball Series at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee Friday afternoon. His first shot of the second half, though, was good, and it gave the Bears their first lead of the afternoon. They hung on from there to defeat the Skyhawks 46-38.

Rolling Meadows wins again Dec 27, 2012 12:00 AM
Jackie Kemph listened well at the walk-through for the Rolling Meadows girls basketball team on Thursday. Then later that night, she raced through the Zion-Benton defense. The Mustangs junior guard delivered a career-high 34 points as Meadows topped the Zee-Bees 78-65 in the quarterfinals finals of the Montini Tournament. The 16-team event had been billed as one of the finest in the state. And it doesn’t get much better than tonight when undefeated state powers Rolling Meadows (15-0) and Marian Catholic (13-0) will square off in the 8:15 p.m. semifinal. The first semifinal features highly-regarded Montini (16-1) and Plainfield East (14-0) at 6:30 p.m.

Dundee-Crown charges back to beat Johnsburg Dec 21, 2012 12:00 AM
All signs seemed to point to a dead end for Dundee-Crown to its Fox Valley Conference boys basketball crossover road trip to Johnsburg on Friday night. Johnsburg was on a shooting tear that resulted in 31 points in less than 10 minutes. And D-C had less than six minutes to try to overcome an 11-point deficit. But one sign the Chargers ignored was to stop playing. They ratcheted up the intensity to go on a 15-point run and scored 19 of the final 21 points in a 55-49 victory.

Growing pains for Grant at Johnsburg Nov 23, 2012 12:00 AM
There figured to be some tough lessons for an inexperienced and junior-dominated Grant boys basketball team. But they won't be much tougher this season than what the Bulldogs experienced Friday night in the final round of pool play in the Richmond-Burton and Johnsburg tournament. With 22˝ seconds to play they seemed to be on their way to playing for a championship with a 5-point lead. But Collin Ridout's 2 free throws with 2.1 seconds left capped host Johnsburg's stunning 49-48 comeback victory.

McConnell, Fremd produce winning debut Nov 14, 2012 12:00 AM
All-area guard Ashley McConnell began her fourth season on the Fremd girls varsity basketball team on Wednesday night in the Vikings' gym. It started with a flourish. The defending Mid-Suburban League champs stormed to 15-0 lead in less than three minutes and never looked back in a 59-23 victory over Johnsburg in the opening round of the Turkey Thriller.

Hampshire holds off Johnsburg Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Hampshire’s opening act in Johnsburg Friday night was Devin Hester-like. In fact, a kick return-a-thon broke loose in the first quarter as the Whip-Purs housed 2 kickoffs, as Tim Jansen returned the opening kickoff 85 yards and Chris Calvin bettered him with 91-yard return 7 minutes later in Hampshire’s 27-21 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win over winless Johnsburg.

Grayslake Central heats up, jolts Johnsburg Sep 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Host Grayslake Central was fired up to win its Fox Valley Conference homecoming football game Friday night against Johnsburg. And after building a 22-0 halftime lead the Rams did just that as they held off a strong surge by the Skyhawks in the third quarter before capturing a 29-12 FVC Fox Division victory.

Another sizzling effort for Fish, Grayslake North Sep 14, 2012 12:00 AM
Many local restaurants offer all-you-can eat fish on Friday nights. For the past few seasons, it has also been an offering on Friday nights at Grayslake North football games — in the form of standout quarterback AJ Fish. While the Knights and their fans can't get enough of their quarterback, visiting Johnsburg had its fill and a little more as Fish and Grayslake North cruised past the Skyhawks 41-7 Friday night in their homecoming game, a Fox Valley Fox Division opener.
