  • Kersemeier dashes into Lawrence Hall of Fame Sep 22, 2014 7:18 PM
    Students at Hersey High School in the 1990s trying to run away from the principal’s office might have had a little problem. The principal at the time, Don Kersemeier, was one of the fastest men in Lawrence University history. Kersemeier set a trio of Lawrence dash records and won multiple Midwest Conference track and field titles. On Oct 10, he will be recognized with the ultimate honor from the school in Appleton, Wis. Kersemeier, a 1963 graduate, will be inducted into the Lawrence Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 10 along with five other inductees.

    It was a battle between the Mid-Suburban East and West girls volleyball leaders for the championship match of the Hersey Invite on Saturday afternoon. The host Huskies, leaders in the East, staked a claim to their own invite with a 25-21, 25-12 victory over Schaumburg.

  • Barrington, Prospect stay in the Wheeling Invite chase Sep 20, 2014 8:52 PM
    For the first time in his 13 years directing the Wheeling Invitational, Wildcats boys golf coach Mark Menich had a little extra work to determine the team champion. Loyola and Barrington each came in with scores of 300, so it came down to the best fifth score, and that belonged to the Ramblers with a 78. Loyola took home the first-place trophy from Chevy Chase Country Club on Saturday while the Broncos were once again runners-up. Prospect (302), Lake Forest (308) and Deerfield (313) rounded out the top five.

    Conant senior Zach Dale entered the season as one of top returning runners in Illinois, and on Saturday at the Peoria Notre Dame Richard Spring Invitational he lived up to his billing. Dale cruised to the title in 14:29 on the state course at Detweiller Park. Close behind him in an impressive second-place run was Hersey senior David Rodriguez (14:34).

    Defense was the name of the game on Friday night at Hersey’s Roland Goins Stadium. And the names of Chase Bandolik, Will Trossen and Kamil Jackowski were among the key players in the overtime session who helped lift the Huskies to a dramactic 6-3 victory over visiting Conant.

    Hersey’s girls swimming and diving team picked up a Mid-Suburban East dual win against visiting Rolling Meadows on Thursday, winning 126-56 at Olympic Pool in Arlington Heights. Other MSL winners included Wheeling, Prospect, Palatine and Conant.

    Hersey’s girls volleyball team notched it second win of the season over Stevenson on Monday night. But these Patriots were not the same ones the Huskies topped 25-18, 25-11 on Sept. 6. at the Jacobs Invite. “They (Stevenson) were a much-improved since we faced them a few weeks ago,” said Huskies coach Nancy Lill after her team edged the Pats 26-24, 25-23 in a nonconference match at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. “We were out of system a little more than we’d like but we were happy to come away with the win. It was a hard-fought battle.”

    York’s girls tennis team topped seven teams competing at the Buffalo Grove Invite on an unusually cold September Saturday morning. The Dukes tallied 37 points to win the title with Libertyville and Maine South collecting 35 points.

  • Vega, Barrington handle Hersey Sep 12, 2014 12:00 AM
    Barrington senior Andrea Vega had two individual victories along with legs on two winning relays to help host Barrington past Hersey 132-53 in Mid-Suburban League girls swimming Thursday. Vega’s solo wins came in the 200-yard IM (2:13.21) and 100 free (55.48). She joined Kelly Holmes, Alicia Han and Sara Kate Capel on the medley relay and Emma Barnett, Kael Ragnini and Emma Toth on the 400 free relay. Other Fillies event winners inlcuded Barnett in the 200 free (2:00.15), Capel in the 50 free (25.56), Kirsten Jacobsen in the 500 free (5:02.02), Emma Graves in the 100 fly (1:01.78) and Maggie Emary in the 100 back (1:02.68). Hersey freshman Olivia Kusio won the 100 breast in 1:11.26, and the Huskies’ Madeline Bovino had the top effort in diving (186).

    Hersey boys golf coach Dan Caporusso said his job is sometimes akin to being the conductor of an orchestra. “You’ve got to have all aspects of the game,” said Caporusso. “Short game, irons, driving, putting, controlling your emotions, in harmony to be able to create beautiful music. “We’ve been hitting some high notes this year, but we’ve still got a ways to go. We’re a work in progress.” Thursday at Old Orchard Country Club in Mount Prospect, the host Huskies got a little closer to their orchestral objectives by playing a winning tune in a 9-hole dual meet victory over Elk Grove.

    Kou Glaser scored in the first half as Rolling Meadows’ boys soccer team got the better of visiting Hersey 1-0 on a chilly Thursday night to earn a key victory and 3 points in the Mid-Suburban League standings. Glaser put the Mustangs (5-2-0, 2-0-0) ahead just before the half-hour mark at Robert Hoese Field after teammate Bret Gibson’s corner was on target. That allowed the senior to redirect and score.

    Opening night in Mid-Suburban League boys soccer demonstrated how difficult life can be in this league. Schaumburg and Hersey couldn’t decide a winner after 100 minutes of play in a 1-1 draw at Roland Goins Stadium on Tuesday in Arlington Heights.
