  • End of the line for Schroeder, Hersey May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Outside hitter Kevin Schroeder has been a key contributor to all the good times the Hersey boys volleyball program has enjoyed over the last four years. Unfortunately for the senior and his teammates, the Huskies' season and Schroeder's exemplary prep career came to an end Friday night at the Niles West sectional. Hersey couldn't recapture the magic of Wednesday's regional title win over Glenbrook North as the Huskies fell to No. 3 seed Loyola 25-17, 25-20 in a sectional semifinal in Skokie.

Hersey hangs on, and moves on May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
It was nervous time for regional host Hersey at Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. In the deciding game of the regional final Wednesday, the Huskies had run out to an virtually insurmountable 22-12 lead in their quest for a big upset victory over state-ranked Glenbrook North. Then sixth-seeded Hersey watched almost helplessly as the Spartans staged an impossible rally, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to close the gap to 24-23. And with the large crowd on its feet in a fever pitch, and North poised to tie the match, junior Mike Fuerst put down one of the biggest kills in the storied history of the Hersey program. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker's final spike, his 10th kill of the match, completed a 25-23, 18-25, 25-23 win over a team that was runner-up in state last season and ranked No. 1 earlier this year.

It will be an all-Mid Suburban League final as the Huskies (14-4-5) prepare to meet top seed and MSL East champ Buffalo Grove, which upended Glenbrook South 3-1 in the afternoon opener at Mundelein.

Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

  • Reed, Meadows win again May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Mid-Suburban League champion Rolling Meadows improved to 19-9-1 with a 1-0 victory over Addison Trail on Saturday in nonconference play. On senior day for the host Mustangs, senior Austin Reed tossed a complete-game 4-hitter. He induced 13 groundball outs, struck out four, walked none and the hits he allowed were all singles. It was a good thing Reed was so sharp, because Addison Trail's Zach Dowz allowed 2 hits and struck out 15 in a tough-luck complete-game loss.

  • Richards rises to the sectional task at BG May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The teams and competitors at the Class 3A Buffalo Grove boys track and field sectional learned quickly Thursday night what the North Suburban Conference, and in particular Mundelein, has known for some time. There really isn’t anything Mustangs sophomore Bryce Richards can’t do on the track. Take, for example, the third heat of the 800-meter run. With one lap remaining, Richards took command, but looked to be losing his grip on the race with 100 meters left. Instead of folding and falling out of the pack like many underclassmen before him might have done, Richards stormed back into the lead and won it. His school-record time of 1:55.33 is among the 10 fastest in the state this spring and earned Richards his first trip downstate. But he was hardly done there.

Palatine senior ace Megan Hedstrom threw a 4-hitter with 4 strikeouts as the Pirates edged host Prospect 3-2 in the Mid-Suburban League third-place crossover on Wednesday. Palatine (17-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jamie Haze (2-for-4, RBI) singled to score Lauren Logan. The Knights (8-19) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Rachel Trebswether led off with a triple to right center and scored on Michele Molini's one-out single to right.
