Durr, Conant power past ProspectMay 5, 2014 12:00 AM
Conant's infield had a little different look on Monday. But the Cougars softball team still had the look of a winner. With catcher Dream Aaron at third base, shortstop Lauren Grzelak at catcher and third baseman Rachel O'Malley at shortstop, the Cougars didn't miss a beat while pounding away a 13-3, six-inning victory over visiting Prospect. “They're a good-hitting team,” said Prospect softball coach Jim Adair, who watched the Cougars match their 13 runs with 13 hits. “There's no doubt about that.” There's no doubt the Cougars have some of the best power you'll find in the area. It was supplied by junior DeeDee Durr (3-for-4) on Monday, who became the first Cougar to reach double digits in home runs when she belted her 10th of the season.

  • Conant keeps connecting, tops FremdMay 3, 2014 12:00 AM
After suffering its first loss at Buffalo Grove despite hitting 3 home runs on Friday, Conant’s softball players apparently decided they had to be a little stronger Saturday. • Fremd finishes ‘curse’ with MSL triumphMay 2, 2014 12:00 AM
Fremd ended its curse Friday at the Mid-Suburban League boys gymnastics meet at Palatine on Friday. The Vikings had always found themselves on the short end at the conference meet, with several near misses at winning a league championship. “We have had some very good teams here,” Fremd coach Tim Hamman said. “But there is always a Conant, or Palatine or some other team that has a state-qualifying team.” Not this year, though, as Fremd proved to be the best of the bunch in winning its first MSL title with a score of 136.95. The Vikings are also MSL West Division champs.

  • Clutch finish helps Hersey past MeadowsApr 30, 2014 12:00 AM
Being the conscientious athlete she is, Angela Schmiederer was not entirely happy with her final at-bat that won Hersey a softball game on Wednesday. “I got the bunt sign (with a runner on first and no outs),” said the Huskies senior catcher and Iowa recruit. “And I failed to get it down.” But she didn’t fail to make up for it a few pitches later. With Dani Sychowski still getting to second base on a wild pitch, Schmiederer was able to swing away. And she produced her best swing of the game — a rocket to the center field fence where the ball rolled under for a ground-rule double allowing Sychowski to cross the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Hersey a dramatic 12-11 victory over visiting Rolling Meadows.

  • Wheeling takes control in MSL EastApr 23, 2014 12:00 AM
This time, fate favored Wheeling. The Wildcats narrowly missed out on a spot in the Mid-Suburban League girls water polo championship last year, as Hersey advanced to the title game based on divisional tie-breaking criterion. Wheeling didn’t want that to come into play this year, and had a chance to do something about it in its own pool Wednesday night as both the Wildcats and Huskies entered the game with 1 loss and 2 games left in the division. Wheeling won 7-5, thus assuring itself of a spot in the league championship game irrespective of the outcome of a final divisional game against Buffalo Grove.
