Prospect to help lead Prospect to a 72-38 victory over visiting Schaumburg.Will, a senior guard headed to Brown University, closed to within 5 points of becoming the Knights’ all-time leading scorer in girls basketball history. She made 10 field goals (three 3-pointers) and 2 free throws on Tuesday at the Jean Walker Field House, named after the coach who was in charge when Colleen Grant set the school record of 1,352 points from 1977 to 1981.

    Hoffman Estates freshman Allura Magsino admitted that it was a little “nerve-wracking” going into her first Mid-Suburban League match. “But I really wasn’t that nervous,” said Magsino, “because I knew my team was there to support me.” And if there were any worries about how the freshman would perform under pressure, those doubts were dispelled Monday night at Arlington Lanes. Magsino fired a 204 in the first game en route to a 561 series as the Hawks defeated Hersey 2,697 pins to 2,604 in a matchup of what should be two of the MSL’s top teams this season.

    Taylor Will went out in style after competing at the York girls basketball tournament for the past four years. The Prospect senior helped lead the Knights to their second straight tourney championship as they wrapped up 4-0 showing with Wednesday’s 70-45 victory over Wheaton North in Elmhurst. Will’s game-high 29 points moved her into second place (1,323 points) on Prospect’s all-time scoring list behind Colleen Grant (1,352).

And Prospect, which made 20-of-27 from the line, can only think of what might have been.

    After a 12-of-24 performance at the free throw line on Wednesday, Prospect coach Ashley Graham discussed the issue with her girls prior to Thursday’s game. “She kind of reminded us about focus and not to over think when we’re at the line,” said Knights senior Taylor Will. “She said ‘Just let your body do it, it’s muscle memory’ .” The Knights sure remembered well. They made 11-of-12 in the final six minutes to help seal a 62-57 victory over Conant in the York tournament.

    Those arriving promptly for the 1 p.m. start of the girls swimming sectional meet at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon were challenged by the volume of traffic around the school, as the Patriots were hosting a Class 8A playoff football which also featured a 1 p.m. kickoff. There was heavy traffic inside the natatorium, too — figuratively moving to the east, toward next weekend’s state championships at Evanston Township High School. Fremd was the most successful lane navigator. The Vikings won all three relays in pool-record times to win with an impressive 299.5 points, topping Barrington (221) and Stevenson (220.5) in the team race.

Now, Deirdre Naughton hopes to put her learning experiences from those mentors to good use as the new Conant girls basketball coach. She accepted the position last spring taking over the program from Dan Travers, who retired from teaching last spring.

    Palatine was on the outside looking in at last year’s Class 3A girls cross country state meet. The Pirates finished a distant fourth, one spot away from a state trophy. But this year Palatine rose to the occasion, placing five girls in the top 37 to secure second place with 91 points at Detweiller Park in Peoria. “Such a difference from a year ago,” said Palatine coach Joe Parks of the Pirates’ drive to a 14th state trophy. “I knew it could go either way, but the girls pulled it off and almost won the title.”
