  • Caliva, Glenbard North oust Conant Jun 7, 2014 10:05 PM
Glenbard North’s Alex Caliva broke her bat at practice on Friday. But for the first time in three years, the senior second baseman did not have a broken heart after playing in a Class 4A sectional championship game. Caliva and the top-seeded Panthers turned the tables from the past two years when they lost 1-run games. This time, it was Caliva’s game-winning double to left that scored Stephanie Campos with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory over No. 2 Conant (26-6) at Bartlett High School.

  • Hard-hitting Conant stops St. Charles East Jun 5, 2014 12:03 AM
After falling to eventual Class 4A state runner-up St. Charles East in a regional championship game a year ago, Conant’s softball players were well aware of the Saints’ ability. “We were ready for a tough game,” said Cougars junior first baseman Hailey Rothstein. It turns out the Cougars were as tough as they had been all season. With Rothstein’s towering two-strike, two-out, 3-run homer over the right-field fence in the bottom of the third inning serving as the defining moment, the No. 2-seeded Cougars blanked No. 3 St. Charles 13-0 in five-innings at the Class 4A Bartlett sectional semifinal Wednesday. Conant (26-5) advanced to Saturday’s championship to face top-seeded Glenbard North (28-5). First pitch is tentatively set for 3 p.m., pending IHSA approval.

  • Competitive O’Malley thrives on all-around success for Conant Jun 12, 2014 12:29 PM
Rachel O’Malley calls third base her comfort zone. O’Malley has helped make things quite comfortable for the Conant softball program and its fans the past four years, playing a key part in three Mid-Suburban League championships. She caps off her stellar prep career by being named captain of the Daily Herald’s Northwest softball all-area team.

  • MSL West’s best prepare for sectional tests Jun 3, 2014 9:38 PM
They were the first and second-place teams in a tough Mid-Suburban West softball conference this season. • Schaumburg hunts down 800 relay title May 31, 2014 10:44 PM
Being at the top of the mountain since the very first outdoor boys track meet of the season made Schaumburg’s 800-meter relay the team to beat. Or, as senior Stacey Smith put it, “The hunted.”

  • Conant outslugs Schaumburg in a classic May 31, 2014 9:52 PM
This one lived up to everyone’s expectations. After two close battles during the Mid-Suburban West season with Conant edging Schaumburg by 2 runs each time, Saturday’s encounter between the softball powerhouses figured to be a close again with plenty of action. Sure enough, the bats were flying in a back-and-forth battle that went the Cougars’ way for the third time. The twist and turns finally ended with junior DeeDee Durr’s two-out line drive single to left which scored freshman Lauren Grzelak from second base for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the tense 9-8 victory, the No. 2 seeded Cougars (25-5) advanced to the Bartlett sectional.

  • Another big step for St. Charles East May 30, 2014 9:10 PM
The St. Charles East girls soccer team has been on a mission to return the program to the glory days of the past. On Friday, the Saints moved a step closer. Before St. Charles High School became St. Charles East with the opening of the North campus in 2001, state titles in girls soccer were commonplace. The old Saints won eight championships during the 80’s and 90’s. They haven’t really come close since — but times maybe changing. The fourth-seeded Saints captured their first sectional title since 2007 with a 1-0 win over host and second-seeded Conant. East advances to the Class 3A Lake Park supersectional next Tuesday to face Rockford Auburn sectional champ Huntley.

  • Buffalo Grove duo makes the grade May 29, 2014 10:39 PM
After match point, you had to know something good had just happened when Peter Georgiades practically broke the 100-meter record with his mad dash into the building at Buffalo Grove. The Bison senior couldn’t wait to get inside to tell a teacher that both he and doubles partner Anton Levitin had just stunned favored Thomas Hanley/Wyatt Mayer of New Trier in three sets to earn a spot in today’s round of 16. It’s the first time a player or team from BG has advanced that deeply in the boys tennis state tournament since 2008.

  • Conant’s going dancing after beating Geneva May 28, 2014 11:21 PM
Friday is Prom Night for Conant High School, and the school’s girls soccer players have had a goal for the evening for some time. “One of our main goals was to go into prom with cleats on, leaving right from the game,” Conant junior Leah Celarek said. The Cougars (14-4-2) earned their right to head to the dance creatively-shod thanks to Wednesday’s 3-1 Class 3A Conant sectional semifinal victory over Geneva.

  • Laura Engelhardt forgave her killer before she died May 29, 2014 5:48 AM
Laura Engelhardt forgave her killer before she died, her sister, Amanda, testified Wednesday during the first day of the Hoffman Estates triple murder trial. About a dozen of Laura’s friends are attending the trial, as are many other supporters of the Engelhardt family. “(Laura) was just the best person I know. Still is,” said one friend, wearing a purple ribbon, the color representing domestic violence, with the names “Marlene, Laura and Al” written on it.

  • Conant manufactures a victory May 28, 2014 10:06 PM
Sure, Conant’s softball team has belted a school-record 49 homers this season. But don’t think for a second that’s the Cougars’ game plan. “They might go over the fence but that’s not our goal,” said Rachel O’Malley who has sent a team-high 11 over the fence this spring. “We’re a small-ball team. Our goal is to get on first base any way we can.” “Sixty feet at a time,” echoed Dream Aaron, the Cougars’ sophomore catcher. “That’s our real motto.” And the No. 2 seeded Cougars lived up to that philosophy in the final inning of their 4-3 victory over No. 15 Lake Park in the Class 4A Hoffman Estate regional semifinal. The game was suspended on Tuesday with the score tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

  • Lake Park’s challenge of Conant will wait for resolution May 27, 2014 9:06 PM
There will be plenty of drama from the get-go when No. 2 Conant and No. 15 Lake Park resume their suspended game from Tuesday. The semifinal of the Class 4A Hoffman Estates softball regional was tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning with senior Stephanie Sturino leading off the Lancers. During her at-bat, the lightning detector sounded and the teams left the field. They will return today at 4 p.m. to resume the game. The second semifinal between No. 7 Schaumburg (23-8) and No. 10 Hoffman Estates (15-14) will follow immediately with the championship still set for 11 a.m. Saturday.

Elk Grove shortstop Becca Maher finished the regular season on Saturday in record style. Maher led off the first game of a doubleheader against host Trinity by belting a home run. It was her 11th of the season, setting the school’s single season mark previously held by Dani Goranson and Megan Keegan. The Grens went on to top the Blazers 13-7 at the Triton College softball diamond. For good measure, Maher belted her 12th homer in Game 2 which the Grenadiers won 13-9 by scoring 4 runs in the top of the eighth inning to top the Blazers (20-12).
