  • Mid-Suburban League lands three state swimming finalists Feb 27, 2015 11:07 PM
    Jake Barson had a steely, confident look atop the starting block seconds before hitting the pool in the 100-yard breaststroke at Friday’s boys swimming and diving state championships. He had this. And a mere 57.38 seconds later, he made it official. Barson broke his own school record in winning his preliminary heat en route to placing fourth overall and advancing to Saturday’s championship finals at New Trier. He was one of three Mid-Suburban League swimmers to finish in the top six, thereby earning a shot at a state title. The others were Elk Grove’s Colin Williams, who qualified fifth in the 100 butterfly (49.70) and Barrington’s Colin O’Leary, sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.17).

    The spectre of 2014 weighed heavily on the minds of the Glenbard North wrestlers as they headed into Tuesday’s Class 3A dual-team sectional matchup against Conant at Niles West. “You bet,” said Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn when asked if his team was thinking about last year’s sectional, where the Cougars eliminated the Panthers 27-26. “Last season we weren’t prepared,” said Hahn. “We didn’t have the intensity, and Conant did. “But last year was last year, and this year is this year. We weren’t about to make the same mistake again.” Despite a strong beginning by the Cougars that saw them grab an early lead at Niles, Conant ultimately fell 39-22. Glenbard North advances and will meet Prospect in a 9 a.m. Saturday state quarterfinal at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

    Bobby Alexander and his coaches at Conant had it all planned out in their atttempt at a 138-pound wrestling state championship. But Anthony Cheloni of Marmion Academy had a similar plan, and it turned out his carried the day. On Friday night, the talented sophomore dashed Alexander’s title dream with a hard-fought 3-0 victory in the semifinals, sending the Cougars standout into wrestlebacks. Alexander certainly made the best of things. On Saturday afternoon, he led six Mid-Suburban League medalists by claiming a third-place finish to cap a sensational four-year career.

  • Peak performance powers Barrington Feb 21, 2015 8:39 PM
    Right on schedule, the Barrington boys swimming team was peaking. That paid serious dividends at the Illinois High School Association sectional meet the Broncos hosted Saturday afternoon. Barrington led the way with six champions out of 12 total events, all of whom advanced to next weekend’s state meet at New Trier. The Broncos also had eight total qualifiers, the most among a crowded field of strong squads, including Stevenson, which won the team title with 238 points.

  • Heartache for Conant’s Alexander Feb 21, 2015 12:56 AM
    Having gone into his state semifinal wrestling match on a record 41-match unbeaten streak, Conant senior Bobby Alexander started as the favorite — not only advance into the 138-pound final Saturday night, but to eventually secure a state championship for himself and coach Chad Hay. But sophomore Anthony Cheloni, the No. 4 seed, had ideas of his own. And when their six-minute bout was whistled over, it was Cheloni earning a spot in the Grand March at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to honor those who will compete for a state crown. Cheloni (34-11) delivered a 3-0 victory, sending the top-ranked Alexander to his first loss of the season.

    It’s that Conant time of year. The Cougars displayed the form Friday night that they hope will help allow for a deep run in the Class 4A boys basketball playoffs. Their 61-51 Mid-Suburban West win over Palatine was a fluid demonstration of defense, rebounding, clutch baskets and immaculate fourth-quarter free throw shooting to conclude the division season.

    Conant’s 56.7 percent shooting night (17-for-30) from the field was impressive as the Class 4A Geneva sectional’s top seed won the Addison Trail girls basketball regional title on Thursday night, the Cougars’ first since 2008. Maybe more impressive was the defensive effort from the Cougars (23-5) that held No. 8 South Elgin to an 8-for-39 (20.5 percent) night from the field in a 50-32 victory. Conant will play the winner of Friday’s St. Charles North regional title game between No. 4 St. Charles East (20-7) and the fifth-seeded host (19-8) in the Monday semifinal at Geneva.

    One statistic by Conant’s Dani Engelbreit symbolized the character of this year’s Cougars girls basketball team. Engelbreit had a team-high 6 rebounds in the Cougars’ 56-34 win over Elk Grove in the semifinal of the Class 4A Addison Trail regional. The 6 rebounds may not seem all that significant until you realize Engelbreit was one of the smallest players on the floor as a 5-foot-4 senior guard.

    Schaumburg coach Mark Kelly said his team saved what he called “our most consistent performance of the season” for the perfect time. Led by a 6-game series of 1320 from junior Jessica Halas, the second-best individual performance of the day, the Saxons won Saturday’s Rolling Meadows girls bowling sectional to move on to next weekend’s state finals. Schaumburg posted a total pinfall of 5841, while Mid-Suburban League rivals Hersey (5758) and Hoffman Estates (5710) also qualified for a trip to Rockford’s Cherry Bowl Lanes, where the state tourney is held.

    The wide array of sports being contested at Barrington High School on Saturday almost gave the campus the feel you’d find at a Olympic-style winter sports festival. Wrestling over here, basketball over there — and down this hallway, the Mid-Suburban League boys swimming and diving championships. And in the pool, the host Broncos ended up celebrating a successful defense of their MSL team title, emerging on top in a finish that was much more tightly grouped than usual. Barrington won with 233 points, followed closely by Fremd (218). Rolling Meadows (183) turned in its highest-ever finish in third place, with Palatine (169) taking a big jump up as well to fourth.

  • Haas’ big 3 helps Hersey win at Maine West Feb 15, 2015 12:27 AM
    Less than 24 hours after clinching a berth in the Mid-Suburban League boys basketball championship game, Hersey was back on the road Saturday. And it was a winning path again as they traveled to Des Plaines to win the nonconference matchup 47-46 over Maine West. Payton Haas hit a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to boost the Huskies (16-8) into the lead. He finished with a team-high 17 points.
