    Mundelein took top honors in Saturday’s Conant Cougar Classic, a boys swimming invitational featuring flighted A, B and C heats in each event. Maine South placed second, followed by the hosts Cougars, Jacobs/Hampshire, Downers Grove North and Huntley. Mundelein winners in individual A heats included Duncan Black in the 50-meter free (25.79) and Will Garcia in the 400 free (4:30.80). The Mustangs also had the fastest 200 medley relay.

    As the early portion of the second day of the Mid-Suburban League’s wrestling championships continued at Hoffman Estates, Conant coach Chad Hay couldn’t help but notice that Barrington just kept on winning. Later on, when it mattered most, it was Hay’s own his team that couldn’t lose. Conant slowly erased a 26-point Broncos advantage, taking the lead for good with a nearly flawless finals performance to win the MSL tournament, and along with it a share of the overall conference title with Barrington. Conant outscored the MSL West champs 249-246 to capture a second consecutive tournament title in thrilling fashion. MSL East champ Prospect finish third in the tourney with 214.5 overall points.

  • Fremd salutes seniors, secures MSL West tie Jan 31, 2015 1:00 AM
    Senior night was a big success for Fremd’s state-ranked girls basketball team as the Vikings clinched at least a tie for its sixth straight Mid-Suburban League West championship. Fremd improved to 20-4 and 8-0 with a 58-37 victory over visiting Schaumburg.

    Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    Rapolas Ivanauskas and Chris Lester garner most of the attention for Barrington’s boys basketball team. But it was the Broncos’ role players who helped them roll past Conant 39-35 Friday in Barrington. The victory ended a two-game losing streak for Barrington (15-6, 5-2). And it kept the Broncos tied for first in the Mid-Suburban West with Fremd, which beat Schaumburg 59-44.

    Victory No. 9 in a row didn’t come easily for host Conant. The Cougars gave up 20 points in the fourth quarter as Deerfield forced an overtime session in nonconference boys basketball Tuesday. But in the extra session, Conant was the only team to score. The Cougars’ 2 points in OT made the difference as Conant (13-7) edged Deerfield 43-41.

    It was showdown night in the Mid-Suburban West for girls basketball.And Fremd showed why it has been ranked among the state’s elite all season. The No. 4 team in Class 4A took command early over visiting Conant and made sure there was little suspense the rest of the way en route to a 46-28 victory over a Conant team (17-4, 5-2) that has been solid all season.

    Hersey’s girls basketball team played back-to-back games for the third consecutive weekend when it traveled to Cary on Saturday afternoon. Coming off a victory over her alma mater (Rolling Meadows) on Friday night, Huskies coach Mary Fendley watched her team pick up its 17th win of the season less than 24 hours later. Led by Claire Gritt (17 points, 6 steals, 5 assists), Juliette Vainisi (9 points), Gina Miklasz (7 points), Kelly Weyhrich (6 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds) and Maggie Berigan (6 rebounds, 9 blocks), the Huskies (17-5) prevailed 50-29 over the Trojans.

    It took just three days, but Conant is back in the Mid-Suburban West boys basketball race. After knocking off Barrington on Thursday, Conant went into Fremd and dropped the Vikings in a defensive battle 42-30 on Saturday. The victory by Conant, coupled with Barrington’s loss to Palatine, put the MSL West into a three-way tie for first with Conant, Fremd and Barrington.

    Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday. Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

    Mid-Suburban League girls bowlers were competing for a cure Thursday night at Arlington Lanes. While rolling their usual conference matches, the MSL players were also bowling for the fight against epilepsy. “In addition to showing awareness,” said Hoffman Estates coach Dan Pfligler, “the teams were raising money for the cause. All of the teams were wearing a ‘Bowl for the Cure – Strike Against Epilepsy’ t-shirt, and many people were supporting by not only wearing the shirts but also making donations. Meanwhile, on the lanes, the Hawks continued to excel. Hoffman Estates defeated Buffalo Grove 7-2, led by sophomore Amanda Richae, who excelled at Wednesday’s meet by rolling a 699 series — the best in the league so far this year.

    Fremd’s Sydney Plichta knows a bit about finishing strong. The Viking senior girls gymnastics standout has been a state finalist the past three seasons, including a third-place medal on bars her freshman year. She put the finishing touches on a sensational night for Fremd, nailing a near-flawless beam routine to take first place with a 9.8 and helping lead the Vikings to the Mid-Suburban West title with a season-best 148.95 on Thursday at the Conant crossover triangular meet in Hoffman Estates.

    Conant spotted host St. Charles East the first eight points of each half in Tuesday night’s fast-paced non-conference game, but remained unfazed on both occasions. Junior point guard Nireet Dhillon provided a calming influence with 22 points and 8 rebounds while sophomore Jorie Wachal poured in 18 first half points to help the Cougars earn a hard-fought 70-64 decision.

    Hersey’s newest sharpshooter was at it again on Saturday afternoon at the Glenbrook South dome in Glenview. Annie Korff had three 3-pointers through Hersey’s first 18 girls basketball games. But in the last two she has four. The senior guard had two on Friday night and tossed in two more in the first half of Saturday’s 48-37 win over the host Titans while scoring a game-high 17 points.

  • Barrington tops Conant, clinches share of MSL West title Jan 16, 2015 10:57 PM
    If anyone wondered whether Barrington had enough to overtake wrestling power Conant, surely there can be little doubt now. On Friday night the Broncos treated a big alumni and youth wrestling crowd by stunning the reigning Mid-Suburban League champs to take hold of the West Division lead entering the final week of the regular season. The convincing 37-22 victory gives the Broncos at least a share of the MSL West title. Barrington will finish its league meets at Fremd next week, while Conant and coach Chad Hay face Hoffman Estates.
