  • Palatine picks Pauly to run softball program Jun 30, 2014 11:47 AM
Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. We’re very excited about the direction our softball program is headed and the mark Nicole will leave here.” Pauly has a master’s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. A Palatine native, Pauly was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball at Palatine High School. She holds Palatine’s single-season record with a .496 batting average and an overall career average of .460. She was the Daily Herald’s All-Area captain in 2006. On the basketball court, she became the career-leader in steals and is second in career points, and was a member of the All-Area basketball team for the Daily Herald. Pauly played professionally for both the Chicago Bandits and Akron Racers in the National Professional Fastpitch league. She earned All-NPF honors with Akron in 2012.

  • Caliva, Glenbard North oust Conant Jun 7, 2014 10:05 PM
Glenbard North’s Alex Caliva broke her bat at practice on Friday. But for the first time in three years, the senior second baseman did not have a broken heart after playing in a Class 4A sectional championship game. Caliva and the top-seeded Panthers turned the tables from the past two years when they lost 1-run games. This time, it was Caliva’s game-winning double to left that scored Stephanie Campos with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory over No. 2 Conant (26-6) at Bartlett High School.

  • Hard-hitting Conant stops St. Charles East Jun 5, 2014 12:03 AM
After falling to eventual Class 4A state runner-up St. Charles East in a regional championship game a year ago, Conant’s softball players were well aware of the Saints’ ability. “We were ready for a tough game,” said Cougars junior first baseman Hailey Rothstein. It turns out the Cougars were as tough as they had been all season. With Rothstein’s towering two-strike, two-out, 3-run homer over the right-field fence in the bottom of the third inning serving as the defining moment, the No. 2-seeded Cougars blanked No. 3 St. Charles 13-0 in five-innings at the Class 4A Bartlett sectional semifinal Wednesday. Conant (26-5) advanced to Saturday’s championship to face top-seeded Glenbard North (28-5). First pitch is tentatively set for 3 p.m., pending IHSA approval.

  • MSL West’s best prepare for sectional tests Jun 3, 2014 9:38 PM
They were the first and second-place teams in a tough Mid-Suburban West softball conference this season. The Mid-Suburban champion Cougars, coached by 14-year veteran CathyAnn Smith, head to the Bartlett sectional with the No. 2 seed and 25-5 record while Barrington coach Perry Peterson, a veteran of 22 seasons, takes the Fillies to the Jacobs sectional with a record of 25-11.

  • Schaumburg hunts down 800 relay title May 31, 2014 10:44 PM
Being at the top of the mountain since the very first outdoor boys track meet of the season made Schaumburg’s 800-meter relay the team to beat. Or, as senior Stacey Smith put it, “The hunted.”

  • Conant outslugs Schaumburg in a classic May 31, 2014 9:52 PM
This one lived up to everyone’s expectations. After two close battles during the Mid-Suburban West season with Conant edging Schaumburg by 2 runs each time, Saturday’s encounter between the softball powerhouses figured to be a close again with plenty of action. Sure enough, the bats were flying in a back-and-forth battle that went the Cougars’ way for the third time. The twist and turns finally ended with junior DeeDee Durr’s two-out line drive single to left which scored freshman Lauren Grzelak from second base for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the tense 9-8 victory, the No. 2 seeded Cougars (25-5) advanced to the Bartlett sectional.

  • Another big step for St. Charles East May 30, 2014 9:10 PM
The St. Charles East girls soccer team has been on a mission to return the program to the glory days of the past. On Friday, the Saints moved a step closer. Before St. Charles High School became St. Charles East with the opening of the North campus in 2001, state titles in girls soccer were commonplace. The old Saints won eight championships during the 80’s and 90’s. They haven’t really come close since — but times maybe changing. The fourth-seeded Saints captured their first sectional title since 2007 with a 1-0 win over host and second-seeded Conant. East advances to the Class 3A Lake Park supersectional next Tuesday to face Rockford Auburn sectional champ Huntley.

  • Buffalo Grove duo makes the grade May 29, 2014 10:39 PM
After match point, you had to know something good had just happened when Peter Georgiades practically broke the 100-meter record with his mad dash into the building at Buffalo Grove. The Bison senior couldn’t wait to get inside to tell a teacher that both he and doubles partner Anton Levitin had just stunned favored Thomas Hanley/Wyatt Mayer of New Trier in three sets to earn a spot in today’s round of 16. It’s the first time a player or team from BG has advanced that deeply in the boys tennis state tournament since 2008.
