    Palatine’s Kelly O’Brien is used to the spotlight, and the Pirates junior was definitely shining brightly in her own right Saturday at the Mark Saylor Mid-Suburban League girls track and field indoor meet. O’Brien earned two state medals last season, including taking second in the 1,600. She continued to impress in the fall by finishing third at the Class 3A cross country state meet. O’Brien kept things rolling on Saturday, taking first in the 800-meter run (2:17.42) and 1,600 (5:05.91) in powering the Pirates to the title with 117.5 points at North Central College in Naperville.

    Barrington improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Suburban West by topping visiting Fremd 13-9 on Wednesday in boys water polo. Marshall Mathias (5 goals), Mitch Gavars (3) and Chase Lesniak (2) accounted for all the scoring as Barrington jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the half.

    Senior Hailey Rothstein and sophomore Lauren Grzelak each belted a home run and a double for defending Mid-Suburban League softball champion Conant in a 15-5 victory over visiting Maine South on Wednesday. Rothstein was 2-for-2 with 5 RBI while Grzelak was 3-for-3 with 4 runs and 3 RBI.

    It didn’t take long for the Mid-Suburban West girls water polo season to get interesting. The two teams who battled it out for a state tourney appearance in a riveting sectional final last year were at it again in a high-profile divisional opener Monday as Conant visited Palatine. While there’s certainly a whole lot of season left, both teams knew this matchup might have a lot to do with who emerges as the eventual conference champ. Give the early edge to Conant, which claimed an 8-7 victory in a game that had a little bit of everything.

  • Cannella, St. Viator rise up against Conant Mar 10, 2015 10:15 PM
    A year ago, St. Viator’s Sal Cannella was concentrating on basketball, hoping to earn a college scholarship. But after struggling last year as a junior, Cannella turned his sights on football. Cannella had a terrific season as a wide receiver for the Lions last year. He earned all-area honors and recently agreeing to a scholarship to Scottsdale Community College. But after his performance on the basketball court Tuesday at the Barrington sectional, Cannella may want to look at all his options. Cannella was unstoppable, scoring a career-best 33 points to lead St. Viator past Conant 55-40. The victory moved the fifth-seeded Lions into the sectional final for the second time in the last three years. St. Viator will meet the winner of Wednesday’s other sectional semifinal between Lake Park and Palatine on Friday at 7 p.m.

    The Class 4A Barrington boys basketball sectional figures to be a battle, with coaches who place defense as their top priority. “We want to play good, solid defense,” St. Viator coach Quin Hayes said. “That’s what we stress every day in practice.” Despite being in three different conferences, all four teams are quite familiar with each other. Conant has the most recent history with the other 3 teams, playing each of them this year and going 3-1 in the process.

    Shiloh High School’s Shayne Smith, representing the Tri-County Titans High School Basketball Coop, won the 2015 Country Financial Three-Point Showdown All-Class Queen of the Hill title on Saturday afternoon in Normal. Montini’s Amy Bukovsky placed second, followed by Conant’s Nireet Dhillon and Carlyle’s Lexi Steele

    At the end of her first season directing Conant’s girls basketball team, coach Deirdre Naughton said she was thrilled to have Nireet Dhillon back to lead the team for one more year. When the junior guard does return to the 2015-16 Cougars, Dhillon will have a new title — Class 4A Three-Point Showdown Queen of the Hill.
