Cary-Grove pulls it out in 7th Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Neither team's seventh-inning lead was safe in Friday's Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball game between Jacobs and host Cary-Grove. Jacobs erased a 5-1 deficit in the top of the seventh with a 5 run-outburst, capped by slugger Connor Conzelman's go-ahead grand slam, his second homer of the game and seventh of the season. Refusing to be upstaged on their home field, the Trojans rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6. Leadoff man Patrick Serowka reached base on Jacobs' sixth error of the game, stole second base with no outs and scored the tying run on catcher Matt Ewert's one-out double to the gap in right center.

Jacobs tabs Roberts new boys basketball coach Apr 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Former Round Lake coach Jimmy Roberts has been named the new boys basketball coach at Jacobs, the school announced Wednesday. "It's exciting," Roberts said. "Jacobs is a great school with great kids that has had success in a lot of sports. It's a growing area and people are passionate about supporting the school. It's an exciting place to be." Roberts, 34, is no stranger to basketball games at the Algonquin school. As a senior point guard at Lake Zurich High School in 1995-96, he scored 35 points in a game at the old Eagles Nest to clinch the Fox Valley Conference title. A two-time all-conference pick, he was named FVC player of the year and all-state in 1996.

Huntley, McHenry graciously share county crown Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley and McHenry were well suited to split the 2013 McHenry County Boys Track and Field Meet title in Cary Saturday. “It’s great that we tied,” Huntley relay anchor Mike Dollar said. “We both competed really hard. I have a lot of buddies on McHenry and I have since middle school.” Once the meet concluded athletes from both programs posed together with the trophy. Even the chummy coaches seemed satisfied with the split decision of a meet delayed two days by bad weather, though both expressed some surprise at the outcome.

Cary-Grove girls make it 5 straight county titles Apr 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove’s drive for five didn’t come easy. The Trojans edged Huntley by 7 points to win their fifth consecutive McHenry County Girls Track and Field Meet on a crisp Saturday in Cary, and they did so by navigating potholes. Sophomore Morgan Schulz tweaked an ankle in warm-ups and had to pull out of the 800-meter relay, which finished second only to Huntley. The Trojans relinquished points in the day’s second race when the 400-meter relay team dropped the baton and finished sixth.

Woodstock, Buhrow surprise Jacobs Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Unheralded Woodstock reminded once-beaten Jacobs of baseball’s humbling nature Tuesday. The Golden Eagles entered the Fox Valley Conference crossover winners of 10 of 11 games to open the season, but they could not solve Blue Streaks right-hander Andy Buhrow. The senior limited predominantly right-handed Jacobs to 3 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits in 6 innings of Woodstock’s 7-3 victory in Algonquin.

Hengler, Jacobs make easy work of Huntley Apr 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Jacobs softball coach Jeremy Bauer likes Jacqueline Hengler as his leadoff hitter because of her speed and ability to get on base. The Golden Eagles' senior added the dimension of power to her offensive repertoire on Tuesday afternoon. Blasting a 3-run home run well over the left-field fence in the fifth inning, Hengler was one of the keys in Jacobs' 10-2 victory over Huntley in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin.
