Who needs practice? Apparently not Jacobs May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Consider it one of the oddest facts of an unusual spring: it's the final week of the regular season and the Jacobs baseball team has yet to hold a full, outdoor practice. Persistent cold, wet weather throughout late March and April kept the Golden Eagles off their own unplayable infield and in their field house for weeks on end. When the weather finally did improve enough to play outdoors, coach Jamie Murray's team took advantage of any dry day by eating into the backlog of postponed games. No time to practice. Just play, play, play. Though they haven't had the opportunity to work on cutoffs from the outfield or pitchers covering first base, the Golden Eagles have nevertheless managed to win 18 of 28 games, including Monday's 7-0 whitewash of District 300 rival Dundee-Crown in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division tilt in Carpentersville.

Jacobs, Crystal Lake South split May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
The Crystal Lake South and Jacobs baseball teams traded walk-off winners Saturday in an intense doubleheader preview of their May 23 regional semifinal. CL South (15-5, 12-5) took Game 1 when Tom Gaede singled to left-center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Jake Bigos for a 3-2 victory. Jacobs (17-10, 9-7) salvaged the split when catcher Aaron Meciej laced a one-out single down the third-base line in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Grant Kale from second base for a 1-0 win. Kale led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Ledinsky.

Hampshire putting it all together May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
In years past, while Hampshire's Patti Nihells, one of the longest-tenured area girls track coaches, may not have had the largest teams but she's always had talented individual athletes both on the track and in the field events. This year, Hampshire is enjoying the best of both worlds. The Whip-Purs are fresh off winning the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division team title in only their second year in the conference. Hampshire, which finished third overall in the 14-team FVC meet, will look to continue that season-long success at Friday's Class 2A Burlington Central sectional. At the sectional level, the top two place-finishers in each event and any individual or relay team equaling or surpassing the minimum state-qualifying standard in each event advance to the state finals in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.

Cary-Grove, Hampshire claim FVC division crowns May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
On a record-breaking night at the Fox Valley Conference girls track and field meet at Grayslake Central, the overall winner sounded like a broken record. For the fifth straight season FVC Valley Division champion Cary-Grove finished as the overall champion in a 14-team meet scored separately by Valley and Fox Divisions. The Trojans scored well in the field events and overcame adversity on the track to amass 114 team points, edging Huntley (102) for the title. Hampshire (85 points) won the FVC Fox Division, marking its first FVC girls track and field title in only its second year as a conference member. Grayslake Central (70) finished second in the Fox Division, fourth overall.
