  • Best to listen to both sides Dec 24, 2010 1:00 AM
I attended a meeting Dec. 11 with Rep. Randy Hultgren and Sen. Mark Kirk at the Norris Center in St. Charles. Most people attending the filled auditorium were adamant supporters. Sen. Kirk and Rep. Hultgren were masters at giving their Republican supporters what they wanted to hear. Part of their program included how they were going to cut taxes, replace Nancy Pelosi with John Boehner and get rid of Obamacare. I was hoping they would bring some new ideas instead of the tired rhetoric and divisive politics which never has helped our country. Where were the Independents and Democrats at this meeting? It would be informative if our politicians could educate us about both sides of issues. Have you ever been to a meeting where an actual debate takes place — a debate where facts are presented, discussions take place and solutions are suggested? Debate is a way to inform, inspire and find solutions. We live in a democracy where we all should be able to participate. One thing the meeting did remind me — that it’s important that we learn what’s really going on in government. Who we vote for affects others. We must question our own politics and our motivation. Do we vote for the good of the country or for our own pocketbook? Although the vast majority in the auditorium were Republicans, that does not reflect the entire 14th District or all of Illinois. There are two sides to every story. If we are ever to get this country out of the hole we are in, we have to understand through factual information where we are and find common ground to solve our problems. Kaye Gamble Sleepy Hollow
