U of I trustees OK extension, raise for Groce May 29, 2013 12:00 AM
University trustees have signed off on a $200,000 annual raise and contract extension for Illinois basketball coach John Groce. Trustees also voted Wednesday to give Illinois-Chicago men's head coach Howard Moore a three-year contract extension, and they approved the naming-rights deal to change Assembly Hall in Champaign to the State Farm Center. Groce's salary will increase to $1.2 million a year. His contract now runs through April 2018.

Big Ten announces 2014 conference football schedule May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The 2014 Big Ten conference football schedule features a whole slate of games in September, with the conference schedule kicking off with Penn State traveling to Rutgers on Sept. 13. The game will be the Scarlet Knights first Big Ten conference game. Illinois opens conference play at Nebraska on Sept. 27, and Northwestern travels to Penn State the same day.

CHAMPAIGN — The iconic Assembly Hall basketball arena has a new name, and the University of Illinois has a new partner to back its athletic programs. As part of a 30-year, $60 million agreement, Illini officials have joined with State Farm to rename the arena the State Farm Center. The building is undergoing a major renovation project that is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2016.

Now he's sharpening his game on the Web.com tour and preparing for his return to the PGA Tour. "My first tournament back will probably be in Memphis (St. Jude Classic in June)," said Affrunti, "but I can play on the Web.com as long as my (PGA Tour qualifying) number doesn't come up."

Starting with the 2013 men's basketball season and the 2014 football season, WSCR radio will be the new Chicago affiliate of the Illini Sports Network, school officials announced Wednesday. The multi-year agreement encompasses the football and men's basketball programs, and Illinois director of athletics Mike Thomas said the Score, the CBS Radio-owned 670-AM station, will carry Illini basketball starting with the 2013-14 season and add Illini football in 2014.

Illinois gives Groce contract extension, raise Apr 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Illinois has rewarded coach John Groce's successful first season in Champaign with a contract extension and a $200,000-a-year raise. Athletic Director Mike Thomas said Saturday that Groce's contract will be extended one year through the 2017-18 season. The raise will increase his pay to $1.6 million a year.

During my first year studying at the University of Illinois in Champaign — or at least being enrolled in classes — the Fighting Illini football team won the Rose Bowl. Then the Illini succumbed to scandal, and the football program hasn’t ever been the same except for an occasional spasm of success. Over time the realization became that Illinois is a basketball school rather than a football school and a basketball state rather than a football state.

The ball that appeared to ricochet off the hands of Miami's Kenny Kadji seconds later but went to the Hurricanes — well, look at the replay. The Hurricanes got Larkin's big shot and the close call, holding on for a 63-59 victory over Illinois on Sunday night in the East Regional. "You saw the same video I did," first-year Illinois coach John Groce said.

You know you're doing something right when former Olympians are wowed by a performance. That's been the case for Buffalo Grove native Mike Wilner, a University of Illinois gymnast who's ranked No. 1 nationally on still rings. The computer engineering major also will compete in this summer's 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel. "I could see him being a national champion, even this year," said Illini head coach Justin Spring.
