  • Barrington’s Kathryn Avedon hoists the sectional championship trophy into the air after their 2-0 victory over Huntley in Rockford on Friday.

Barrington claims 4th straight sectional May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Aimee Pierce stood between freshmen Jenna Szczesny and Kelsey Muniez encouraging them in their postgame interviews. But this wasn't a typical situation for a sectional championship team. After all, Muniez had only played on the Barrington varsity team for a month and hadn't scored a goal. Szczesny has been on the Fillies' varsity squad, but it has been the playoffs where she has started to become a constant scoring threat. Each freshman scored goals in Barrington's 2-0 victory over Huntley in the Class 3A Rockford Boylan sectional, giving the Fillies a fourth-straight sectional crown.

  • Bartlett’s Mitch Sullivan, left, competes in the 3,200-meter relay last weekend at the St. Charles North sectional. The Hawks will participate in the event this weekend at the Class 3A state meet in Charleston.

Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

  • Self, Jacobs get past Huntley May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The Jacobs baseball team's 8-4 victory over Huntley Thursday was partly a matter of Self-help. No. 3 Huntley led 3-0 after half an inning, but No. 2 Jacobs showed no panic. The Golden Eagles chipped away with single runs in the first and second innings before erupting for a 6-run third to pull away for an 8-4 victory in a Class 4A Huntley baseball regional semifinal.

  • Marathon goes to Huntley May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Huntley made good on the 10th penalty kick and after 4 overtimes and PKs, the Red Raiders beat Jacobs 3-2 Tuesday in the semifinals of the Class 3A Rockford Boylan sectional.

  • Cary-Grove finally gets to Huntley May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
It takes a special performance to upset the high-powered offense of Cary-Grove's softball team, and Huntley freshman pitcher Haley Spannraft nearly had one of those afternoons. Unfortunately for No. 4 Huntley, it was almost. Through 5 innings, Spannraft worked on what could have been a gem to remember, giving it her all during a 4-hit shutout. Cary-Grove, the Class 4A Huntley regional top seed, failed to get runners in scoring position across in the first, fourth and fifth innings. But Cary-Grove's bats came alive in the sixth. The Trojans capitalized on an error on Jamie Deering's pop fly to left, which opened up the flood gates to a 4-run inning that saw Lindsay Efflandt drive in the first and winning run on a single to lift Cary-Grove into Saturday's regional final with a 4-0 win in Huntley Tuesday afternoon.

Her painting, titled “French Quarter,” will be displayed in the halls of Congress for the next year alongside other winners.

Huntley High senior’s art wins her chance to visit mom May 20, 2012 12:00 AM
It's rewarding, of course, to beat out young artists from all over northern Illinois in a contest. Doubly so when that victory comes with two plane tickets to visit your mom. For Tabitha Hein, the path to victory started in New Orleans, where her mom was stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard. Tabby, a senior at Huntley High School, visited her mom there — a rare occurrence these days — and became intrigued with the city's different architecture.

Huntley High senior qualifies for public speaking nationals May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Huntley High School senior Marta Markowski will paticipate in the National Forensics League national tournament in June in Indianapolis. Markowski is the first student from Huntley to represent the school at the national level. Her speech, which she modifies after each tournament, encourages students to take positive risks in life. Huntley High School speech coach Tom George said Marta is the hardest working student he has coached in his 20-year career. "I have never had a student as dedicated to speech as Marta," he said. "No one has ever worked as hard. Marta embodies the concept of a team and I hope she does well for herself at nationals."
