  • Jacobs nails down first FVC title Jan 31, 2015 9:40 PM
After finding itself on top of the competition at the end of day one of the Fox Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, Jacobs’ wrestling team had one goal in mind: win the FVC for the first time in school history. Despite being one of two Top 10 teams without an individual conference championship, the Golden Eagles had 14 wrestlers battle for a Top 5 spot and needed every one of them to hold off McHenry and win the conference title. Jacobs finished with 208.5 points, 7 ahead of the host school, Saturday afternoon at McHenry.

  • Cary-Grove’s Gregoire hits 1,000 mark Jan 31, 2015 11:16 PM
There did not appear to be anything on the line when Cary-Grove senior Jason Gregoire was fouled with five seconds left in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball game Saturday night at Huntley. The Trojans were just trying to finish off a 45-35 victory thanks to a big night from Gregoire. • Jacobs in good position to win first FVC crown Jan 30, 2015 10:37 PM
What a difference a year makes. Last season, a less than sparkling opening day at the Fox Valley Conference wrestling tournament all but erased the hopes for Jacobs of a top four finish. On Friday, things were different for coach Gary Conrads’ club and with the Golden Eagles on the front foot from the opening bout, Jacobs finds itself heading into Saturday’s final day of the conference tournament with an 8-point lead, 105-97 over host McHenry, and 23-more than division rival Cary-Grove (82.0) which enjoyed a solid first day.

  • Huntley routs Dundee-Crown for 20th win Jan 27, 2015 10:13 PM

  • Huntley rolls over Jacobs for 11th straight win Jan 24, 2015 11:22 PM
Jacobs girls basketball coach Joe Benoit threw every defensive set he had in his bag of tricks at Huntley forward Ali Andrews on Saturday. As it turned out, all the fronting, traps and double teams dedicated to the 6-foot 2 forward still wasn’t enough in Huntley’s 58-34 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division home win over the Golden Eagles.

  • Dual perfection for Huntley, Vernon Hills at D-C Jan 24, 2015 8:25 PM

  • Freshmen making their mark in Fox Valley Jan 22, 2015 1:31 PM
A varsity basketball coach’s decision to play freshmen has its pros and cons. Sometimes a coach’s hand is willfully forced by the sheer athleticism or size of an incoming freshman. For example, anyone in the Fox Valley area who last year witnessed the play of 6-foot-5 Larkin forward Christian Negron, 6-8 Jacobs center Cameron Krutwig or Hampshire 6-3 forward Brennen Woods as freshmen understood those players belonged in their respective lineups from a physical standpoint.

  • Huntley, Andrews beat Stevenson at the buzzer Jan 19, 2015 7:09 PM
Stevenson forced Huntley junior Ali Andrews to do something not many teams make the talented Red Raiders standout do Monday and Andrews was more than up to the challenge. The 6-foot-2 Illinois recruit usually dominates the paint but the Patriots concentrated their interior defense on Andrews in the second half, pushing her to the perimeter. Not only did Andrews respond to the challenge, she did so in game-winning fashion, and with Illinois associate head coach Mike Divilbiss looking on. With the game tied 48-48 and 5.2 seconds to play, Andrews took an inbounds pass from teammate Madeline Moffett, took the basketball down the right sideline, then pulled up and banked in a 14-footer at the buzzer to give the Red Raiders a dramatic 50-48 win in the semifinals of the DeKalb MLK girls basketball tournament at Chuck Dayton Gymnasium.
