Cary-Grove’s Cullen the man at Barrington Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
How do you improve on perfection? Don’t ask Michael Cullen, because the Cary-Grove sophomore still feels he’s a long way from being there. Of course his opponents might feel a little differently if they were asked. Another simply smashing performance from Cullen was put in the books following a dominating 11-1 major decision in his 113-pound final against Colin Kenyon (New Trier, 33-8) at the Class 3A Barrington sectional Saturday. The win sends the Trojans’ star into the 3A state tournament on the front foot, and a well-deserved top 4 seed when things begin Thursday on the big floor of Assembly Hall in Champaign. Cullen (42-0) will be joined by teammate Michael Underwood (138) and Logan Hanselmann (120) both for the first time, after each won in dramatic style in their afternoon state qualifying bouts.

Dundee-Crown snaps Huntley’s Valley streak at 29 Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Huntley’s 29-game winning streak against division opponents was gone in 29 seconds. Consecutive Dundee-Crown 3-pointers by seniors Dylan Kissack and Brandon Rodriguez 29 seconds apart turned a tenuous 2-point lead into an 8-point cushion with 1:49 to play and propelled the Chargers to a 47-38 victory in Carpentersville Saturday night.

Grayslake Central rallies to dump Huntley Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
When Huntley’s Ali Andrews nailed a 12-footer, the Red Raiders extended their lead to 29-16 with 6:12 left in the third quarter. It appeared the Red Raiders were on their way to an easy win over Grayslake Central. But someone forgot to tell the Rams the game looked to be over. Responding with a 23-0 outburst, Grayslake Central rallied for a 47-42 victory over the Red Raiders in a Fox Valley Conference crossover battle of second place girls basketball teams at Huntley Friday night.

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

Egekeze leads Huntley to another FVC Valley win Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Junior 6-foot-7 forward Amanze Egekeze says his surgically repaired knee loosens up as games progress, the timing of which worked out well for Huntley in Wednesday's 59-53 victory at Crystal Lake South. Egekeze blocked 4 shots, all in the second half, highlighted by his denial of a driving layup attempt by CL South leading scorer Austin Rogers with 22 seconds left. Rogers' shot could have trimmed Huntley's lead to 2 points. Instead, Egekeze swatted it from behind, grabbed the rebound, drew a foul and sank both super-bonus free throws to provide the final margin of victory in Huntley's 29th straight victory against a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division opponent.

Cary-Grove tops Huntley for 4th straight FVC Valley title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Cary-Grove needed a quick pick-me-up since it was down 9 points to visiting Huntley and only 5:36 remained in regulation of Saturday afternoon’s Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball title showdown at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert used a timeout to get his players, who were trying to claim a fourth straight conference championship, to visualize the positive potential of a situation which could have easily fostered overwhelming negativity. “The most important thing was staying positive and not getting down about them scoring and being down nine,” said Trojans’ senior Joslyn Nicholson. “Coach told us to imagine how cool it was going to be after we pull this one out in five minutes.” OK, so Saffert was quite on the mark in terms of time. But the Trojans (19-6, 10-1) managed to force overtime and went on to clinch at least a share of their 12th conference crown with a 50-44 victory over the Red Raiders (21-5, 10-2).

Jacobs’ Ryan claims 106 title at Huntley Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
At roughly the same time last year, Jacobs wrestler Austin Ryan was told by the IHSA he could no longer wrestle in the sectional semifinals after suffering a concussion, which prevented the then-sophomore a run to state. With his health no longer an issue, the IHSA can’t stop Ryan this time. The Golden Eagles’ junior walked away with the 106-pound regional title over Harlem’s Adam Zacharuk 5-1 in the Class 3A Huntley regional Saturday afternoon.

Huntley starts fast then hangs on Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
All of the early signs pointed to a nice and relaxing Friday night for Huntley’s boys basketball team before a big home crowd. All five starters contributed to the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division leaders scoring 14 of the first 16 points in the opening 4 ˝ minutes. And visiting McHenry didn’t have 16-point averager and top 3-point threat Shane Varvil to help make up the deficit because of an injured right foot. But relaxing made for a nerve-racking finish for the Red Raiders. They scored 9 of the last 11 points for a victorious 42-35 ending that wasn’t as happy as they originally envisioned.

Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

Hope is in the air as cheer squads head downstateJan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Cheerleading squads from all over Illinois converge on Bloomington Friday as the 2013 IHSA's competitive cheerleading state championships open. The suburbs are well represented in the 100 schools that made the championships. "We're so excited," said Conant cheerleading coach Dana Muszynski. "We're a young team, but they're very determined and driven." Only the top 10 in each of the three divisions return to compete on Saturday for the state titles.

Huntley stays unbeaten in FVC Valley Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
With Huntley's boys basketball team trailing Prairie Ridge in the second quarter, Marty Manning called a timeout. The Red Raiders' coach got in his players' faces about their intensity, or lack thereof. The Raiders responded with a 12-0 run and eventually cruised to a 56-30 home victory Tuesday night. Jake Wagner scored 12 points, and Amanze Egekeze added 10 as Huntley improved to 13-6 overall and 7-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division.

Burlington Central’s kiddie corps has exceeded expectations Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been well chronicled that Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith knew he had some talent coming in when he took the Rockets' head coaching job. And Smith knows talent. His daughter, Kelsey, plays at DePaul and as a boys baskeball coach for several seasons at St. Charles North, as well as a former high school and college player himself, Smith knows good players when he sees them. But even Smith admits being surprised at how well his freshman-laden team has done this season. At 19-4 overall and having secured their first Big Northern East championship since 2006-07, the Rockets also cracked the Daily Herald Top 20 this week for the first time this season, and they're the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A regional that they will host. Central has not won a girls basketball regional since 1990 and has only three regional banners in program history.
