Candidates interested in Stephanie Kifowit's former Ward 3 aldermanic post in Aurora have until Monday to file nominating petitions, while those interested in filling out the at-large Councilman term of Jeanne Ives in Wheaton must file between Dec. 17 and 24.

Aurora Alderman Stephanie Kifowit will resign her seat on the city council Tuesday after winning election to the state legislature, she announced this week. Kifowit, 41, said she will step down from her post as alderman for Ward 3 following a 5 p.m. meeting Tuesday so she can concentrate on preparing for her new role as 84th District state representative. "It's important that I dedicate time in the upcoming weeks to transition into the new position so I can really hit the ground running," Kifowit said.

Democrat Stephanie Kifowit won the 84th state House seat, claiming 62 percent of the vote against Republican Pat Fee with all precincts reporting unofficial totals. Kifowit, a 41-year-old Aurora alderman and substitute teacher, said she chose to run for a state-level position because "you realize there's so much more that can happen for the residents if the state just comes together and starts working together."

Concealed carry divides 84th House hopefuls Oct 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Both candidates for the 84th state House seat say they hold firearm owners identification cards, but Stephanie Kifowit and Pat Fee say they would vote differently on a plan to allow concealed carry in Illinois. Fee said she supports concealed carry, while Kifowit says she would vote against it. “Right now, I need to represent the voters of the 84th District,” said Kifowit, a 40-year-old Marine Corps veteran of Aurora. “And going door-to-door and talking to a lot of individuals, at this point in time a lot of people are uncomfortable with the state of Illinois and conceal and carry for many reasons.”

In the campaign for the 84th state House seat, the name Michael Madigan keeps coming up. Republican candidate Pat Fee of Aurora says Madigan must be replaced as speaker of the House before legislators from both parties will be able to work on solutions to the state’s biggest problems. “There will be no working together. He (Madigan) rules it the way he wants it ruled and this is where we are today,” Fee said. Democrat Stephanie Kifowit said collaboration is possible.

Aurora Alderman Stephanie Kifowit said she plans to continue running her campaign for 84th District state Representative the old-fashinoned way, after winning the Democratic primary Tuesday night. Beating opponents Alex Arroyo and Carole Cheney of Aurora, Kifowit received 49 percent of the vote from unofficial totals in 67 of the districts 68 precincts.

Carole Cheney, a 51-year-old Aurora attorney, said she would support gambling expansion if it can be proven more casinos wouldn’t just draw business from existing venues and if it is “regulated properly.”

When Illinois lawmakers raised the personal income tax rate to 5 percent last year, they gave the increase an expiration date — 2015. One of three Democratic candidates for state representative in the 84th district says she would not vote to extend the 5 percent income tax past 2015, when it is set to decrease to 4 percent, but the other two candidates say it’s too soon to take a stance on the issue.
