    A fire that started in the bedroom of a Hoffman Estates house caused an estimated $100,000 in damages, but might have been worse had the door and windows in the room been open, fire officials said Sunday. Hoffman Estates Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Fortunato said one of the residents of the one-story home at 1060 Apple Street may have prevented further property damage by closing the bedroom door after opening it to discover that the room was on fire.

    A former employee at Alden Poplar Creek nursing home in Hoffman Estates was ordered held on $30,000 bail Wednesday after authorities say she stole an engagement and wedding ring belonging to an 83-year-old resident who suffers from dementia. Bria Abrams, 21, of the 1900 block of Cobblestone Drive in Carpentersville, was charged with theft, a class 3 felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Probation is also an option.
