  • Sears loss widens to $548 million as sales slide continues Dec 4, 2014 8:37 AM
    Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., the department- store chain controlled by hedge fund manager Edward Lampert, posted its 10th straight quarterly loss as sales continued to decline. The third-quarter net loss widened to $548 million, or $5.15 a share, from $534 million, or $5.03 a share, a year earlier, the retailer said today in a statement. Revenue in the three months ended Nov. 1 slid 13 percent to $7.21 billion.

    A judge denied Thursday a request to return to juvenile court the case of the 2005 murder of an Aurora substance abuse counselor. Garang Deng, now 23, was 14 when prosecutors say he shot and killed Marilyn Bethell, 47. Deng, a Sudanese immigrant and former Waubonsie High School student, pleaded guilty in adult court and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

  • West Dundee man indicted in business fraud scheme Dec 4, 2014 11:41 AM
    Two men, including one from West Dundee, have been indicted on federal fraud charges alleging they bilked 125 business owners nationwide out of $2 million. Federal prosecutors said Alberto B. Colon, 46, of West Dundee, and a Virginia attorney named Artemio Rivera, 56, are facing an array fraud charges involving their defunct Hoffman Estates real estate business.

     
  • Gay ex-Holy Family music director files discrimination claims Dec 5, 2014 5:16 AM
    The longtime music director at the Holy Family Catholic Community in Inverness who was fired after announcing over Facebook his engagement to his male partner, filed discrimination complaints against the church Thursday in a bid to get his old job back. Colin Collette alleges he was discriminated against based on his sex, sexual orientation and marital status in complaints to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Cook County Commission on Human Rights.
