    By 1945, at the end of WWII, less than three percent of American military personnel were women. Barbara “Bobbie” Merritt was one of them. A resident of Sedgebrook, a senior living community in Lincolnshire, Bobbie achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer inthe Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving in Arlington, Virginia.

    Hoffman Estates police have reopened Route 59 at Golf Road after a multivehicle crash this morning, authorities said. One person was injured and taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for treatment.

  • Candidate filing starts for three northwest Cook County villages Nov 17, 2014 5:30 AM
    Three Northwest suburban villages — Hoffman Estates, Palatine and Schaumburg — begin their weeklong filing period today for candidates wanting to run for a seat on their boards or councils. The villages have the potential for a primary election on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Primary races would be triggered if the number of candidates who file for a particular office exceeds four times the number of seats available.

    The Model Railroad Club of Sun City Huntley will be running model trains this holiday season, starting Saturday, Nov. 22, through Dec. 28. Each year, the club raffles off three model train sets. This year’s raffle is a Canadian Pacific Passenger Train set that includes engine, cars, track and a transformer.

     
  • Hoffman Estates to consider 81 new homes Monday Nov 15, 2014 1:56 PM
    Hoffman Estates village board members Monday will consider approval of an 81-home subdivision on 37 acres at the northwest corner of Algonquin and Ela roads. The former farm property was long owned by the Bergman family, who only recently began marketing it for development, Hoffman Estates Assistant Village Manager for Development Services Mark Koplin said.

Thirty five youth participated in a Parliamentary Procedure Jeopardy game created by Avni Patel, learned the importance of being a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer taught by Maddie Currie, Abby Daniels, Charlotte Roberts and parent volunteer Robbie Roberts.

    The Friends of the Palatine Public Library will hold a Holiday Used Book Sale from Friday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 23. The sale includes gift-quality books, including a 70-volume leather-bound set of the Library of Presidents, and a 19-volume leather-bound set of Hemingway novels.

    A man and woman stole a 50-inch LED TV around 5:22 p.m. Nov. 3 from Rent-a-Center, 121 E. Irving Park Road, Streamwood. The female distracted the clerk, who was also busy with other customers, while the male shoplifter carried the TV out of the store. Value was estimated at $1,818.

     
  • Tech company eyeing Gurnee strikes exclusive agreement with Argonne National Laboratory Nov 12, 2014 5:30 AM
    An exclusive licensing agreement for diamond semiconductor technology has been granted by a federal agency to a company that wants to move to Gurnee. AKHAN Semiconductor Inc. still needs Gurnee village board approval for a tax incentive package to move there.
