  • Fremd wins MSL meet; Prospect’s Gonzalez claims all-around Jan 30, 2015 11:22 PM
Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

  • Another winning blend for Palatine Jan 29, 2015 10:05 PM
Perhaps Hoffman Estates coach Luke Yanule said it best. “They’re on a roll. They’ve really got good chemistry,” he said of Palatine, which had just dismantled his Hawks 73-48 in an MSL West game Thursday night at Hoffman Estates. The “chemistry” formula is working well. The Pirates’ sixth straight win, yet another in convincing style, had them jumping ahead 16-0 and 24-4 after the first quarter. The lead got as wide as 34 at 61-27 in the third quarter. And it’s defense as the catalyst in that potent mix for Palatine (17-6, 4-3).

Not since coach Jean Walker’s 21-8 and 20-7 seasons in 1989 and 1990 had Prospect’s girls basketball team put together back-to-back 20 win seasons. But that changed on Tuesday night at Buffalo Grove where the Knights posted a 66-44 triumph that improved their record to 20-1 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-Suburban East.

  • Richae, Hoffman Estates lead a winning battle Jan 22, 2015 9:19 PM
Mid-Suburban League girls bowlers were competing for a cure Thursday night at Arlington Lanes. While rolling their usual conference matches, the MSL players were also bowling for the fight against epilepsy. “In addition to showing awareness,” said Hoffman Estates coach Dan Pfligler, “the teams were raising money for the cause. All of the teams were wearing a ‘Bowl for the Cure – Strike Against Epilepsy’ t-shirt, and many people were supporting by not only wearing the shirts but also making donations. Meanwhile, on the lanes, the Hawks continued to excel. Hoffman Estates defeated Buffalo Grove 7-2, led by sophomore Amanda Richae, who excelled at Wednesday’s meet by rolling a 699 series — the best in the league so far this year.

  • Vance, Lake Park band together to top Hoffman Estates Jan 20, 2015 11:07 PM
The fancy record that Lake Park’s boys basketball team has compiled through 20 games has been a pleasant surprise. After taking down host Hoffman Estates 53-33 Tuesday night in nonconference play, the Lancers improved to 17-3. “If you would have told me that we would be 17-3 after 20 games before the season started, I would be a little surprised,” Lake Park forward Connor Vance said. Tuesday’s 17th win was a one-for-all, all-for-one effort, but Vance carried the flag. He scored 8 of Lake Park’s first 10 points as the Lancers got out to a 10-3 lead against the Hawks (4-11).

  • Fremd’s depth shows in victory over Hoffman Estates Jan 17, 2015 9:26 PM
Fremd boys basketball coach Bob Widlowski has always been a proponent of going deep into his bench, regularly playing as many as 10 players. And that approach paid huge dividends for Fremd on Saturday in the Vikings’ 67-53 victory of Hoffman Estates in Palatine. After a lethargic start, Widlowski quickly went to his bench to spark the Vikings. And they didn’t disappoint. Led by Kyle Sliwa, the Fremd reserves accounted for 18 of Fremd’s 30 first-half points.

  • Mickey, Rolling Meadows muster up a big win Jan 17, 2015 12:50 AM

  • Full speed ahead for Meadows in victory at Hoffman Estates Jan 9, 2015 9:53 PM
There was no rust, nary a post-holiday letdown for the Rolling Meadows boys swim team Friday afternoon. The Mustangs, on the road after the Mid-Suburban League winter break, defeated host Hoffman Estates 99-67 to improve 3-1 in dual meets this season. Sure, the main headline-makers were at top form, like senior Jake Barson, who won the 200-meter individual medley (2:21.26) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.03). Freshman Jake Dellorto did likewise in the 200 freestyle (2:04.65) and 400 freestyle (4:30.72). The pair also helped the Mustangs end the meet with a bang by winning the 400 free relay with teammates David Myers and Filip Pancerz, in 3:52.19. But Meadows showed its depth with strong efforts from its third swimmers, allowing it to take the top three places in six events, and finish 1-2-3 in two of them.

  • Palatine grinds past Hoffman Estates Jan 9, 2015 10:46 PM
Few Mid-Suburban West boys basketball victories come easily. Despite trailing most of the way Friday, Hoffman Estates made Palatine work for its 56-52 victory to the very end. “Every MSL West game is a grind,” Palatine guard Chris Macahon said after leading the Pirates’ balanced attack with 14 points. “We tried to pull away, and they wouldn’t let us.” That, in a nutshell, is a perfect description of a game that didn’t go into the win column for Palatine until a missed 3-point attempt in the final seconds bounced off the rim.
