  • Hoffman Estates makes amends, handles Streamwood Jan 6, 2015 10:56 PM
Sure, it would have been easy for the Hoffman Estates boys basketball team to coast Tuesday night in their nonconference game against Streamwood. After all, the Hawks were at home, and school today had already been cancelled due to anticipated lousy weather. But there was one problem — the memory of a lopsided loss in their last game, to Glenbard West over the holidays. So instead of taking it easy, Hoffman Estates sprinted out to a 16-1 lead and never looked back, defeating the pesky Sabres 68-46.

Flores, Johnnic and Ives earned their second consecutive individual crowns, and Aaron Schliesmann (120) and George Beck (220) joined their team mates atop the podium as the Tigers made it two team titles in a row after outscoring runnerup Fremd 221.50-189.

  • Girls basketball / Northwest roundup Dec 27, 2014 12:38 AM
Hersey coach Mary Fendley could not recall in her 16 seasons losing two prominent players to injury (senior captains Annie Korff and Juliette Vainisi) during the same week. First, Vainisi suffered a dislocated elbow at practice and then Korff went out of Friday’s Wheaton North tournament game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury ankle. The young Huskies still got the result they were after, a 47-39 victory over Glenbard South.

The Mid-Suburban League’s first girls basketball team to board an airplane for competition will be returning home in high spirits. • Anderson, Conant measuring up Dec 19, 2014 11:31 PM
Haley Anderson is one of the best inside scorers in the Mid-Suburban League. “I love getting the ball inside,” the 6-foot senior center said. “After a few conversions inside, then that can set up someone to be open outside where they can convert from the behind the arc.” That proved to be the perfect method in the Cougars’ 58-25 victory over visiting Hoffman Estates in the Mid-Suburban West contest on Friday night.

  • Conant closes out Hoffman Estates Dec 19, 2014 10:34 PM
Conant finally found a way to win a close one. The Cougars, who had heartbreaking losses to Fremd and Barrington, held off a late charge by host Hoffman Estates on Friday and topped the Hawks 60-55.

  • Young, tough lineups as Barrington faces Fremd Dec 18, 2014 8:26 PM
Friday marks the first big dual meet test of the season in Mid-Suburban West boys swimming and diving as two-time defending overall league champ Barrington pays a visit to Fremd. The Vikings placed third in last year’s conference meet — but it would be a mistake to put much emphasis on last year when looking at either of the teams this season. Both programs are trotting out lineups very different from last winter, with one thing in common: youth.

  • Buffalo Grove’s Savage rolls 300 game Dec 17, 2014 9:52 PM
In 40-plus years of Mid-Suburban League girls bowling, there had been only six 300 games thrown until the gem last week by Karsyn Burgess of Wheeling put the total at 7. Now, make it 8. Buffalo Grove junior Joanne Savage stole the spotlight Wednesday, firing her first-ever 300 in the second game of her match against, of all teams, the Wildcats.

  • Langanis, Cary-Grove outpace Hoffman Estates Dec 16, 2014 8:58 PM
In the long run, swimming year-round has certainly helped Cary-Grove junior Cooper Langanis. Already a standout distance swimmer as a sophomore, a summer commitment to the sport is yielding impressive early winter results for him. They were on display Tuesday at Hoffman Estates, where the Langanis won the 200-meter freestyle (2:02.88) and 400 free (4:23.00) in times that are already on par with his best efforts of last winter’s high school season. Those performances helped the Trojans produce a 96-86 victory in a nice nonconference matchup of teams featuring several impressive developing swimmers.

  • Growth shows in a road win for Rolling Meadows Dec 16, 2014 10:37 PM
Growing up is hard to do. Rolling Meadows is doing it, grudgingly sometimes, and showed it Tuesday night at Hoffman Estates in holding on – just barely – for a 60-58 Mid-Suburban divisional crossover win in boys basketball.

  • Larock lifts Prospect at Conant Dec 13, 2014 8:24 PM
Prospect coach Randy Smith was effusive in his praise of senior Maddie Larock, and who could blame him after her performance Saturday at the Conant girls gymnastics invitational? Larock, in a tremendous effort, helped lead the Knights to an upset win and the first place trophy in the 36th annual meet in Hoffman Estates. The senior finished second on the uneven parallel bars event and tied for second on balance beam as Prospect (108.52) edged Carmel (108.45) for the title.

Rolling Meadows earned its first dual victory of the boys swimming season, topping Elk Grove 136-44 on Friday in the facility both teams share at Elk Grove High School in a Mid-Suburban East dual. Both teams got to celebrate program records in the 500-yard freestyle. Elk Grove senior Colin Williams won the event in 4:53.61, erasing the mark that had existed since 1977. It’s already Williams’ second team record of the season, as he established a new benchmark the previous week in the 200 IM. The second-place finisher in the 500 free was Rolling Meadows freshman Josh Dellorto. He touched in a personal-best 5:01.14 and also broke the Mustangs’ program record.
