  • Hoffman Estates hangs on at Hersey Sep 5, 2014 11:32 PM
Hoffman Estates needed a near miss to become 2-0 for the second year in a row. The Hawks had taken a 10-9 lead with just over three minutes to play on a 23-yard field goal by Connor McCreary. They then had to hold their collective breaths as Hersey lined up for a game-winning field goal try from 28 yards out with 4.9 seconds left. But the kicked just sailed left of the goal post as the Hoffman bench erupted in joyous celebration as the Hawks claimed a 10-9 victory Friday in Arlington Heights.

It turned out to be a truly grand opening for Buffalo Grove’s girls swimming team. Anyone visiting the impressive structure will have a hard time believing it occupies much of the same space as the previous pool, the Aquadome.

  • Resilient McDonald bounces back for Barrington Sep 3, 2014 10:25 PM
Bailee McDonald is one of the top rebounders for coach Babbi Barreiro’s Barrington girls basketball team. The Fillies senior knows how to rebound in other ways, too. McDonald, who came back from foot surgery earlier this summer, was not exactly thrilled with her score of 50 in a Mid-Suburban League tri-meet last week against Prospect and Palatine at Makray Memorial. How did she rebound? How about a career-best and medalist round of 39 at Rob Roy Golf Course in Prospect Heights on Wednesday afternoon?

  • Marmion, St. Edward’s Mattas shine at Elgin Country Club Sep 2, 2014 9:57 PM
The Elgin Country Club golf course played nicely to one of its members and to a bunch of first-timers on Tuesday at the 18-team Country Club Invite, hosted by South Elgin. St. Edward junior Michael Mattas, an ECC member, shot a career-low 69 to win the individual title while Marmion, which didn’t have a single player who had ever seen the 6,500-yard layout, captured the team championship with a 318 on a perfect day for golf.

  • Hersey heats up, edges Fremd Sep 2, 2014 11:51 PM
Due to the humidity outside, the Fremd gymnasium was awfully hot. So was the action on the volleyball floor. In a decisive third game that was tied at every point to 10, and a total of 13 times, the final point came when junior Liz Fuerst leapt high near the outside pole and put down a kill to clinch a 26-24, 20-25, 25-23 victory for the Huskies.

  • Long night, happy ending for Hoffman Estates Aug 30, 2014 12:42 AM
Friday night might just turn out to be the longest night of the 2014 season for the Hoffman Estates football team. But the three-and-a-half hour marathon, including a 30-minute lightning delay, may very well be the most satisfying. The Hawks kicked off the 2014 campaign with a hard-fought 42-25 victory over Streamwood behind three rushing touchdowns from senior running back Connor McCreary, including two in the first quarter that spotted the Hawks to a 21-0 lead.
