  • Conant denies Hoffman Estates Oct 25, 2014 12:40 AM
    Walking the field before his team’s season-ending game against Hoffman Estates on Friday, Conant football coach Bill Modelski had a smile on his face and a gleam in his eye. “We’re gonna win,” he said with confidence as he watched his charges warm up. Modelski proved prophetic. The Cougars beat Hoffman Estates 24-16 to finish its season 4-5 and 2-3 in the Mid-Suburban West. The victory also denied the Hawks their first playoff berth since 1994, as they finished 4-5 overall and 1-4 in league.

  • Lockdown over at Hoffman Estates High School Oct 23, 2014 1:21 PM
    A soft lockdown of Hoffman Estates High School that began when an unattended package was found at about 10:30 a.m. in the school's stadium has ended. Hoffman Estates police Sgt. Kasia Cawley said the bomb squad cleared the area of any possibility of danger by 12:20 p.m., but the investigation of the package is continuing.

     
  • Football: Week 8 MVPs Oct 23, 2014 12:17 AM
    Waubonsie Valley senior quarterback Zach Bennema and Batavia senior defensive end Josh Leonhard have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their performances in Week 8 of the high school football season. Bennema was prolific both as a passer and ball-carrier in Waubonsie Valley’s 25-28 victory over Neuqua Valley, while Leonhard intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown along with providing great all-around play in the Bulldogs’ 26-20 decision over Geneva.

     
  • Girls tennis: State tournament scouting, Northwest Oct 22, 2014 11:57 PM
    As many as 376 hopefuls from all around Illinois have gathered for the most important weekend of high school girls tennis, as tournament host Buffalo Grove and the 11other Mid-Suburban League schools welcome the field to the area. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Thursday and runs through Saturday. The semifinals are schedule to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Buffalo Grove, with the championship matches to follow.

     
  • Girls volleyball / Northwest roundup Oct 21, 2014 10:53 PM
    Fremd’s girls volleyball team received 8 kills from Lane Hindenburg and 7 from Ysabel Lee en route to a 25-16, 25-23 victory at Buffalo Grove in Tuesday’s Mid-Suburban League second-place crossover. Maisie Koo added 4 kills and a block for the Vikings who raised their record to 23-6.

     
  • Peralta carries Hoffman Estates past Glenbard East Oct 18, 2014 4:44 PM
    Penalty kicks are a nightmare for every goalkeeper. Well, almost every goalkeeper. Hoffman Estates senior Christian Peralta saved two of four spot kicks while his teammates converted all four of their attempts to help the Hawks defeat No. 16 seed Glenbard East 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Lombard to advance in the Bartlett sectional complex.

     
  • Conant’s Dale, Hersey repeat as MSL champs Oct 18, 2014 5:20 PM
    All eyes were fixed on Conant senior Zach Dale on Saturday at the Mid-Suburban League boys cross country meet, and the Cougar senior didn’t disappoint. Dale, who has a run conservative race schedule this season, showed no rust in running away with the victory in 14:58, earning himself a second consecutive MSL title at Busse Woods. “Maybe it wasn’t flashy,” said Conant coach John Powers of Dale’s victory. “But this was a matter of taking care of business, and he passed the eye test big-time.” Hersey also took care of business. The Huskies placed four runners in the top 12 in securing their second consecutive MSL title with 57 points, holding off a strong challenge from Buffalo Grove (63 points).

     
  • O’Brien, Palatine work through another MSL title Oct 18, 2014 4:55 PM
    Palatine junior Kelly O’Brien made it look easy early, but she had to work hard late. On a cool and damp morning, O’Brien jumped out to a comfortable lead in the first mile in the Mid-Suburban League girls cross country conference meet on Saturday at Busse Woods. But Fremd senior Ayako Higuchi made her work in the final 2 miles. The two ran neck-and-neck in the final mile before O’Brien made a final surge with 20 meters remaining to secure the MSL title in 17:52 leading Palatine to its third consecutive MSL triumph with 40 points.

     
  • Mayes makes it happen for Hoffman Estates Oct 18, 2014 12:33 AM
    The situation was pretty cut and dried for the Hoffman Estates football team on Friday night. Win its final two regular-season games, and it would likely gain a berth in the Illinois High School Association state playoffs. Thanks to senior quarterback Jeff Mayes, it’s one down, one to go for the Hawks. Mayes led Hoffman Estates to a 28-14 victory over Schaumburg on Friday, throwing 3 touchdown passes and scampering 30 yards for another to improve his team’s record to 4-4 and 1-3 in the Mid-Suburban West.

     
  • Hersey’s program perfect against MSL East Oct 17, 2014 12:03 AM
    Hersey’s streak of 12 straight Mid-Suburban League East girls volleyball championships is quite the feat. The Huskies program added another rare accomplishment on Thursday. With its freshman and sophomore teams pulling out three-set wins at Rolling Meadows on Thursday, all levels combined for a 50-0 record this fall. The varsity squad completed its 10-0 run with a 25-12, 25-15 triumph as Liz Fuerst put down a match-high 12 kills.

     
  • Zahn, Palatine edge out Conant Oct 17, 2014 12:02 AM
    Senior year got here early for Palatine’s Lily Zahn. Though in just her third season as a key member of the Pirates’ girls swimming and diving team, Zahn in is her last year of high school competition. She’ll graduate early in pursuit of greater classroom challenges in advance of a promising collegiate future. “I love having Lily,” said Palatine coach Brittany Berleman, “because she shows that you can do it well, athletically and academically, at the same time.” The athleticism was on display during Palatine’s senior night, as the Pirates wrapped up their Mid-Suburban League duals with a 98-88 victory against visiting Conant.

  • Barrington scores an MSL title, with Hersey close behind Oct 11, 2014 6:41 PM
    Although it was one of the closest team scores in years, Barrington still was able to net a 20th consecutive Mid-Suburban League girls tennis championship, posting 53 points at Schaumburg on Saturday afternoon to complete the three-day tournament. Hersey followed with 46 points for second place, and Fremd was third with 38, just ahead of Buffalo Grove (36).

     
  • Miller thrills as Barrington rolls again Oct 10, 2014 11:32 PM
    Barrington receiver Scotty Miller had the kind of game Friday night that most players can only dream of. The senior hit pay dirt on three long scoring plays in the first half, and his effort helped lead the visiting Broncos to a 55-14 Mid-Suburban West win over Hoffman Estates. Miller caught a 38-yard touchdown toss from Johnny Davidson in the first quarter, then added a 61-yard TD catch plus a 59-yard scoring run in the second stanza to set the tone for what turned out to be a relentless offensive attack from Barrington (7-0, 3-0).

     
  • Special Olympian crowned Hoffman H.S. homecoming king Oct 11, 2014 1:31 AM
    Amid chants of “A.J.! A.J.!” from his classmates, Hoffman Estates High School special education student and four-year drummer for the school band, A.J. Pilafas, was crowned homecoming king Friday afternoon to his amazement and delight. Joining him as homecoming queen was fellow band member and the school National Honor Society president Hannah Greenwalt.

  • Schaumburg earns share of West title Oct 9, 2014 11:55 PM
    The Schaumburg girls volleyball team clinched a tie for first in the Mid-Suburban West on Thursday night with a 25-23, 25-9 victory at Hoffman Estates. Senior Oyinkan Akinola put down 8 kills for the Saxons while Mallory Gerber and Lexi Ross each added 3. Schaumburg improved to 16-6 and 8-1 in the West, one match ahead of Fremd (7-2) and Palatine (7-2) with one to play.

    Wheeling was a forgotten team during the first half of the Mid-Suburban League boy ssoccer season as others in the division stormed ahead of the reigning conference champs. But five straight victories have put the Wildcats (11-5-4, 7-2-1-22 points) on the brink of a second consecutive trip the MSL Cup, with only Hersey standing in the way.

    The longest division winning streak in Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball history is alive and well.Hersey made it 12 straight East crowns on Thursday night when the Huskies rallied from a second-set loss and a 10-7 deficit in Set 3 to post a 25-18, 20-25, 25-12 victory at Buffalo Grove.
