  • Roman, Prospect surprise Buffalo Grove May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Freshman Angela Roman collected more than half of visiting Prospect's RBI when the Knights stunned Mid-Suburban East softball leader Buffalo Grove 9-4 on Tuesday. Roman, who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, belted a two-out 3-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Knights a 9-1 lead. It was Roman's second homer of the season. She also hit one against Fremd last Saturday.

    Barrington catcher Ryan Lidge was not quite sure which he liked better: picking runners off, or hitting a double. So the senior did both — twice — to lead Barrington past Palatine 5-2 Monday in a showdown of the top two baseball teams in the Mid-Suburban West.

  • Conant’s Mauk makes his mark: record 9.9 on parallel bars May 4, 2013 12:00 AM
    After the Conant boys gymnastics sectional Saturday in Hoffman Estates, Conant’s Joey Mauk was encouraged by his teammates, family and friends to climb on top of the parallel bars. Mauk sheepishly complied and then stood with each foot on a bar, with his arms crossed, looking like royalty. Mauk had all the reason to look like a king after conquering the parallel bars earlier with a state-record 9.90. Mauk’s score helped Conant win the sectional with a 154.60 to earn the team’s first trip to state finals in three years. The Cougars will compete for the state title with seven other teams next Friday at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort.

    After a defensive lapse played its part in a loss to Barrington on Friday, Palatine wanted to get back on track heading into a tough week of softball beginning Monday. The Pirates accomplished their goal with a 7-2 victory over visiting Wheeling on Saturday afternoon.

    Santiago, Prospect connect for repeat MSL title May 3, 2013 12:00 AM
    If Prospect was looking for a knockout punch, junior Christina Santiago sure delivered it. Santiago came from behind in the third lap to take control of a loaded 1,600-meter field, cruising to the win in 5:10.30 and helping nail down a second consecutive Mid-Suburban League title for the Knights on Friday night at Schaumburg. Prospect won five events in winning with 153 points, Palatine took second (129 points) followed by Barrington (106 points), Wheeling (54 points), and Fremd ( 52 points).

     
  • Palatine stays in MSL West hunt May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
    victory over visiting Hoffman Estates on Thursday. The game was called when the lightning detector sounded in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Pirates (12-7,6-2) had just scored 3 runs with out an out on a RBI double by Lauren Logan, RBI single by Grace Rohrwasser and RBI triple by Tori Walzak for the 8-0 lead.

The Cougars hit visiting Hoffman Estates for 5 first-half goals, then cruised to a 6-0 victory on Wednesday to celebrate their senior sight on a high note. The victory keeps Jason Franco's club slim hopes alive in the race for the top spot in the MSL West after division-leading Barrington grabbed 3 vital points in a 2-0 win over Prospect.

    Buffalo Grove's softball team has it eyes on a Mid-Suburban East title this spring. The Bison saw their lead increase in the division standings on Wednesday. With a 14-1 five-inning victory at Hoffman Estates, the Bison improved to 6-3 to gain a 2.5-game lead on five-time defending champion Elk Grove (4-6).

    Brad Schwind and Michael Fan helped Schaumburg end Barrington's 11-game winning streak Wednesday in Barrington. Schwind pitched 5 scoreless innings and Fan belted 2 home runs to lead the Saxons past the Broncos 6-2.

    Senior Ashlynne Schwantz and sophomore Joanna Josten combined for a 12-1 Mid-Suburban League victory over host Hoffman Estates in five innings. Winning pitcher Schwantz (9-3) struck out three in the first two innings and Josten recorded 4 strikeouts in the final three innings. Leigh Farina and Tracy Welninski had homers for Fremd (10-6, 5-1) while Mandi Matsumoto tripled. Teammates Kristine Herdegen and Michelle Mazur each doubled and freshman Alysia Garcia was 2-for-3.

    Hoffman Estates had a hit in four different innings when it came to bat in the top of the eighth on Monday at Prospect. When it counted the most, the Hawks put together their first multiple-hit inning of the game and came away with a 3-2 victory in the Mid-Suburban League softball crossover.

  • Five-homer day powers Barrington into school record book Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
    Barrington's bats belted their way into school softball history on Saturday at the Fields of Dreams. While sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Libertyville 11-1 and 12-4, the Fillies slugged five more home runs and now have 33 for the season, breaking the former mark of 30 set by the 2007 team that finished second in the Class AA state tourney. Fittingly enough, it was senior third baseman Loren Krzysko's 3-run blast in the second inning of Game 1 that set the record. The Arkansas-bound Krzysko (3-for-3, 2 homers, triple, 5 RBI) is also the school's all-time homer run leader with 35.

     
  • Local schools fare well in U.S. News rankings Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
    Twelve Northwest suburban public high schools are ranked by U.S. News & World Report in its annual list of best high schools. Top among them is Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, at 6th in Illinois and 33rd in the nation.
