Details of hazing plan under scrutiny in Senate committee May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
A suburban Democrat says he'll make changes to a proposal that grew out of hazing scandals in the suburbs after lawmakers raised questions about how broadly it would be applied. State Sen. Dan Kotowski, a Park Ridge Democrat, presented the plan to a Senate panel Wednesday. He wants to create a new crime called "failure to report hazing" in the wake of high-profile scandals at Maine West and Hoffman Estates high schools.

Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).

While Keller was throwing down the thunder, Santiago was lighting up the track for Prospect. She opened the day by helping Prospect secure the third-best time in the 3,200 relay (9:19.87) and followed up by hitting a school record and securing the third-best time in the 1,600 (4:55.72).

Big defensive finish key for Conant May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant, the top seed in the Fremd boys water polo sectional, was getting all it wanted from Hoffman Estates on Saturday afternoon. The No. 3 seed Hawks, after springing an upset on No. 2 Fremd the previous night, were within 7-5 late in the third quarter. It seemed like Hoffman Estates had every chance to stay in the game, and perhaps even pull a stunner. Conant had other ideas. Senior Jon Burke scored on a man-up possession at the end of the third quarter, and the Cougars didn't allow another goal the rest of the way in an 11-5 victory. Conant (30-3) earned its first state tournament trip since 2007 and will face Stevenson at 7 p.m. Friday in the Elite Eight at Stevenson.
