    Conant senior Zach Dale entered the season as one of top returning runners in Illinois, and on Saturday at the Peoria Notre Dame Richard Spring Invitational he lived up to his billing. Dale cruised to the title in 14:29 on the state course at Detweiller Park. Close behind him in an impressive second-place run was Hersey senior David Rodriguez (14:34).

    Huntley junior duo Seth Conroy and Keagan Smith fed off each other on Saturday at the 40th annual Harvey Braus Invitational at Lake Park. And the pair helped Huntley take a big bite out of the 20-team boys cross country field in Roselle. Conroy (15:12) and Smith (15:20) went 1-3 in leading Huntley to an impressive second-place finish with 77 points.

    Glenbard West just keeps rolling. Last year, the Hilltoppers won the Class 3A girls cross country state title, and they haven’t missed a beat in starting this season. The previous weekend, Glenbard West ran to impressive victory in a loaded Hinsdale Central Invite, and the Hilltoppers kept it going on Saturday at the 40th annual Harvey Braus Invitiational at Lake Park in Roselle. Junior Lindsay Graham took control of the race in the second mile and cruised to the individual title in 16:49, powering Glenbard West to the team title with 27 points.

And it was all good news for Palatine’s girls team. Lundell did not miss once in 23 tries and delivered a career-high 9 aces as the visiting Pirates topped the host Hawks 25-7, 25-11 for their first win in the Mid-Suburban West.

    Hoffman Estates needed a near miss to become 2-0 for the second year in a row. The Hawks had taken a 10-9 lead with just over three minutes to play on a 23-yard field goal by Connor McCreary. They then had to hold their collective breaths as Hersey lined up for a game-winning field goal try from 28 yards out with 4.9 seconds left. But the kicked just sailed left of the goal post as the Hoffman bench erupted in joyous celebration as the Hawks claimed a 10-9 victory Friday in Arlington Heights.

Gabri Olhava led the Huskies’ attack with 7 kills, followed by Liz Fuerst (4), Zoe Strozewski (4), Caity Strozewski (3) and Kelly Hill (3).

    It turned out to be a truly grand opening for Buffalo Grove’s girls swimming team. To begin the Mid-Suburban League’s series of dual meets, the Bison hosted Hoffman Estates in their new pool Thursday. Anyone visiting the impressive structure will have a hard time believing it occupies much of the same space as the previous pool, the Aquadome.
