The situation involving what is known as Adequate Yearly Progress and its impact on school choice is a top issue in Hawthorn District 73, school board candidates agree, though they are uncertain how best to address it. Whatever happens, the complex issue will require continued public input to resolve, say four candidates for three seats. One certainty is the winners April 9, all newcomers to politics, will be bringing a different perspective as three incumbents are not seeking re-election.

This past September, Nicole Sladkov, a seventh-grader at Hawthorn Middle School South in Vernon Hills, was on the USA National Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Team that won honors in the 2012 Pan American Championships in Cordoba, Argentina.
