  • Kosy, Jacobs having a banner girls tennis season Oct 15, 2014 6:17 PM
Not all improvements in sports have to be of the physical nature. Jacobs junior girls tennis standout Ashley Kosy made one important change this season that had nothing to do with that part of her game. “My mentality has changed,” she said. “I used to get too unsettled in matches or I would get upset. Now, I try to improve what I did wrong, get over it and move on.”

  • Crystal Lake South’s Ahsmann fighting return of cancer Oct 15, 2014 6:12 PM
Crystal Lake South football coach Chuck Ahsmann has lived with marginal zone lymphoma for 22 years, so when the 52-year-old felt fatigued in recent months he wasn’t sure if the source was his ongoing cancer fight or the natural effects of aging. However, a biopsy of bone marrow drawn from Ahsmann’s hip during an annual checkup three weeks ago revealed a rising cancer rate of 20 percent. The slow-growing tumor was depleting the red blood cells that carry oxygen to his muscles, causing fatigue and other symptoms.

  • Burlington Central’s Kurosky will play at state Oct 14, 2014 9:51 PM
Conditions at Fox Run in Elk Grove were not favorable for golf on Tuesday, so all four girls scheduled for a playoff to determine the final qualifier out of the Class AA Conant sectional will be allowed to play downstate this weekend. That includes Burlington Central junior Josie Kurosky, who shot an 83 on Monday.

  • Jacobs blanks Dundee-Crown Oct 14, 2014 9:56 PM
Chris Rigby and the Jacobs soccer team will forever remember the night they upset District 300 rival Dundee-Crown to conclude the 2014 regular season in Algonquin Tuesday. Not because it was senior night and for bragging rights, as the Golden Eagles downed the Chargers 1-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division finale but because they did so in downright ugly conditions: a heavy rain from start to finish which saturated the field, chilly temperatures in the low 50s and a biting north wind blowing in excess of 20 mph.

  • Prospect likes its downstate prospects Oct 13, 2014 9:39 PM
All the work and practices Prospect coach Jim Hamann put his girls golf team through this fall were geared toward seeing his players enjoying their best golf at the end of the season. With that in mind, the Knights sure must have made their coach proud on Tuesday at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee. They produced their best team score of the season (330) in some of the toughest conditions of the fall. With many golfers still having to finish their rounds due to rainy weather suspending play late in the afternoon, all of the results of the Warren Class AA sectional are still unofficial and not yet reported to the IHSA. Coaches will be alerted early in the morning if play will resume at noon Tuesday. If conditions are still unsuitable, Wednesday would be the finishing day. Yet to finish their team scores are Barrington, Loyola, Libertyville and Crystal Lake Central.

  • Jacobs nabs FVC girls tennis crown Oct 11, 2014 9:41 PM
Patience is a virtue. Just ask Jacobs girls tennis coach Jon Betts. During Betts’ 10-year tenure as the Golden Eagles coach, Jacobs finished second in the Fox Valley Conference six times. Jacobs is no longer a bridesmaid. For the first time since 2003, the Golden Eagles are conference champs.

  • Huntley savors its own tournament championship Oct 11, 2014 9:29 PM
Playing St. Francis and Cary-Grove earlier in the week turned out to be beneficial losses for the young Huntley girls volleyball team. The Red Raiders finished off a perfect weekend with a 25-20, 25-22 win over Marian Central Saturday to capture the championship of the 30th annual Huntley Invitational, the first time they have won their own tournament in coach Karen Naymola’s three years at the helm.

  • No. 1 Cary-Grove’s momentum just keeps building Oct 11, 2014 12:04 AM
As Friday’s 49-7 victory at Jacobs demonstrates, nothing slows the momentum of the Cary-Grove football team these days. Not even a broken body part.

  • Jacobs claims crown at Geneva regional Oct 7, 2014 9:50 PM
With heavyweight boys golf programs like Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North in the field, Jacobs felt overlooked as a potential favorite to win Tuesday’s Class 3A Geneva regional. But the person whose opinion mattered most to Jacobs’ players certainly liked the Golden Eagles’ title chances. “Our goal was to win the regional,” Jacobs coach Gary Conrad said. “I just knew these guys had the ability to do it.”
