  • Huntley rolls over Jacobs for 11th straight win Jan 24, 2015 11:22 PM
Jacobs girls basketball coach Joe Benoit threw every defensive set he had in his bag of tricks at Huntley forward Ali Andrews on Saturday. As it turned out, all the fronting, traps and double teams dedicated to the 6-foot 2 forward still wasn’t enough in Huntley’s 58-34 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division home win over the Golden Eagles.

  • Jacobs handles Huntley as Orange eclipses 1,000 Jan 23, 2015 10:33 PM
After falling just short in his previous game, it took Chrishawn Orange less than 2 minutes to eclipse the 1,000-point mark Friday. The 6-foot-2 Jacobs senior scored on a layup off a feed from Kenton Mack to reach the mark early in the Golden Eagles’ 58-39 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball win against Huntley at the Eagles’ Nest.

  • Jacobs impressive in beating Dundee-Crown Jan 22, 2015 10:06 PM
Rarely mentioned as a major player during the Fox Valley Conference tournament, the Jacobs wrestling program will likely be in the hunt next weekend when the tournament begins at McHenry High School. The Golden Eagles (15-1-0, 3-1-0) continued adding to their impressive 2014-2015 resume after their 44-16 victory on Thursday, spoiling Dundee-Crown’s Senior Night before a big crowd in Carpentersville.

  • Freshmen making their mark in Fox Valley Jan 22, 2015 1:31 PM
A varsity basketball coach’s decision to play freshmen has its pros and cons. Sometimes a coach’s hand is willfully forced by the sheer athleticism or size of an incoming freshman. For example, anyone in the Fox Valley area who last year witnessed the play of 6-foot-5 Larkin forward Christian Negron, 6-8 Jacobs center Cameron Krutwig or Hampshire 6-3 forward Brennen Woods as freshmen understood those players belonged in their respective lineups from a physical standpoint.

  • Jacobs holds off Cary-Grove Jan 21, 2015 1:26 AM
The effective zone defense played by the Cary-Grove boys basketball team on Tuesday gave the Trojans a shot to upset visiting Jacobs, but the Golden Eagles made just enough plays down the stretch to escape Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium with a 47-43 victory. Trailing by 8 points with five minutes left in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game, Cary-Grove (8-1, 1-2) drew within 42-41, thanks to a 9-2 run fueled by a pair of Jason Gregoire 3-pointers and a three-point play by senior forward Nick Barr. But the Trojans never got the “one more” they sought.

  • Jacobs’ Heiss committs to Arkansas Jan 19, 2015 12:18 PM
Approximately fifty college baseball programs spoke to Lake in the Hills resident Brenden Heiss throughout the recruitment process and five made serious offers, but Arkansas made the right-handed pitcher from Jacobs truly feel wanted, he said. Following a soul-searching meeting Sunday evening with Heiss’ 17-U travel ball coach, Todd Fine of Top Tier, the junior decided there was no point in waiting further. He called Arkansas assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Tony Vitello at 10:30 p.m. and committed to the Razorbacks.

  • St. Charles East sets winning college pace Jan 17, 2015 9:27 PM
From early morning to mid-afternoon on Saturday, none of the boys swimming teams at the St. Charles East College Events Invitational were able to keep pace with the host Saints. The morning started well, with Andrew Lewarchick and Max Thompson going one-two in the diving and the Saints opened the swimming portion of the meet with victory in the 400-yard medley relay and cruised to a 455-329 victory over Highland Park in a six-team meet.

  • Defense propels Jacobs past Crystal Lake South Jan 17, 2015 1:01 AM
The Jacobs boys basketball team hasn’t employed full-court pressure often this season, but the Golden Eagles used it Friday against visiting Crystal Lake South and converted turnovers into points early and often in a 75-43 victory.

  • Shoemaker’s fortitude lifts Jacobs over Huntley Jan 15, 2015 11:17 PM
The stipulation read that if the Jacobs wrestling team locked in a win or was too far behind prior to its final match against rival Huntley, 220-pound Carson Shoemaker was going to take a back seat for health precautions. Shoemaker’s skin infection wasn’t a major concern heading into Thursday’s night’s dual as it cleared up prior to the meet but it did provide some hesitation. A doctor’s note however gave the Golden Eagles a major fail-safe and when Shoemaker’s name was called to defend Jacobs’ 36-28 Fox Valley Conference win in the nightcap after the Red Raiders made it close, the senior didn’t hesitate.

  • Andresen likes the progress D300 co-op is making Jan 14, 2015 9:48 PM
While the District 300 (Dundee-Crown, Hampshire, Jacobs) boys swimming team didn’t register a victory in a recent meet against the District 155 co-op team, coach Rick Andresen saw plenty of progress that has him optimistic about what lies ahead. “We had a good meet,” he said. “We saw a lot of encouraging things and we saw some things that need work. We are getting better, but we need to tighten some things. The times we swam were very respectable. We had nice time drops in some events. All of the hard work we did during the holiday break might be paying off. I’m pleased overall, especially with the improvement of our younger kids.”

  • Lococo, Dundee-Crown outlast Jacobs in OT Jan 13, 2015 11:32 PM
In a game where Dundee-Crown girls basketball coach Sarah Miller said afterward she never felt fully relieved until the final buzzer of a 66-60 overtime win over rival Jacobs Tuesday night, Chargers guard Lauren Lococo found her offensive rebound putback that padded D-C’s lead in the extra session to be somewhat therapeutic.

  • Stingy defense leads Jacobs past Waukegan Jan 10, 2015 10:49 PM
The only number Jacobs boys basketball coach Jimmy Roberts was interested in after his team’s nonconference game with Waukegan was 23. That was the number of points his stingy and stifling Golden Eagles defense gave up in cruising to an easy 55-23 win over the visiting Bulldogs in Algonquin Saturday night.

  • Huntley grinds out a win over Jacobs Jan 9, 2015 10:40 PM
It is hard to win a game when you make 2 of your first 10 shots, shoot 20 percent from 3-point range and 30 percent overall but Huntley’s girls basketball team found a way. Spearheaded by a 14-0 run which covered the third and fourth quarters, the Red Raiders were able to earn a hard-fought 43-33 win over host Jacobs in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Friday night.

  • Huntley, Hampshire make holiday strides Jan 8, 2015 8:49 PM
Progress. That’s what most basketball teams look for at holiday tournaments and Huntley’s girls definitely made some at Montini. The Red Raiders went 3-1 at one of the top Christmas tournaments in the state, taking fifth place in the tough 16-team field. Huntley opened with a win over Batavia 43-37 before losing to Montini 63-33, but then came back and beat Geneva 66-63 in double overtime and Neuqua Valley 47-44. Geneva and Neuqua are leading their respective divisions in the Upstate Eight Conference.

  • Jacobs opens FVC Valley play with decisive win Jan 6, 2015 11:16 PM
One thing about the flip of the calender benefiting the Jacobs boys basketball team: the Golden Eagles could leave their 2-game skid and disappointing fourth place finish in the Hinkle Holiday Classic behind them. As far as the new year is concerned, after the Golden Eagles downed the Warriors in McHenry 56-38 Tuesday to begin Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play, it’s safe to say they’ve forgotten about the past and adjusted their minds to what’s ahead for them in 2015.
