  • Energetic Jacobs snaps losing skid Dec 8, 2014 10:54 PM
Sometimes the stat sheet can’t account for what Jacobs sophomore Carly Sidor brings to the table for the Golden Eagles girls basketball team. And after dropping two straight and 4 of their last 5 games, the Golden Eagles were in definite need of some energy to get them off the snide. Jacobs looked fluid from the get-go in its 51-34 Fox Valley Conference crossover road win over winless Crystal Lake Central Monday, as Jessica Powell led all scorers with 13 points on three 3-pointers. But it was Sidor’s 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and defense that set the tone for Jacobs (4-4), which jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter.

  • Jacobs gets past Chicago Harlan Dec 6, 2014 10:35 PM
Jacobs boys basketball coach Jim Roberts realized Chicago Harlan’s helter-skelter run-and-gun style would provide a challenge for his team early in the 2014-2015 campaign. The Golden Eagles met the challenge. Playing without Northern Michigan recruit Kenton Mack, the Golden Eagles got 17 points from Chrishawn Orange, 14 of them in the second half, in a 62-48 win over Harlan in action at the Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin Saturday afternoon.

It’s rare to find three defending state champion basketball teams under one roof, but that’s what fans can expect at the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin on Saturday. The daylong event features three high-caliber boys games and the marquee matchup of the girls basketball season thus far between defending Class 3A champion Montini and Class 4A champion Whitney Young, the latter coached by Larkin graduate Corry Carter Irvin, sister of Larkin boys coach Deryn Carter.

  • Young vs. Montini matchup at Larkin worthy of seeing Dec 1, 2014 9:32 PM
The turkey having settled, it’s time to move to step two of the girls basketball season, which kicks off in earnest this week as conference play around the Fox Valley area begins. But on Saturday, conference wars take a break for the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin. Three top-notch boys games will be played and one very marquee girls game, at 3:15 p.m., will pit defending Class 3A state champion Montini against defending Class 4A state champion Whitney Young of Chicago. Young is coached by 1992 Larkin graduate Corry (Carter) Irvin, the brother of Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter.

  • Jacobs comes back to beat Deerfield Nov 28, 2014 11:32 PM
Jacobs senior point guard Chrishawn Orange knew the shots would fall in his team’s favor at some point. It’s a good thing those shots fell at the end when Jacobs needed them to the most. After Deerfield sizzled in the first and third quarters and senior guard Sam Kuznetsky hit Jacobs for 30 points, the Golden Eagles stepped up their defense and rallied back from as many as 7 points down to start the fourth quarter behind Orange and senior Matt Bindi, who knocked down clutch 3-pointers in the final 4 minutes, to give Jacobs a 51-48 win Friday night at the 2014 Ed Molitor Thanksgiving Classic in Palatine

  • Streamwood breaks into win column Nov 26, 2014 9:59 PM
With the level of talent on the Streamwood girls basketball roster it was only a matter of time before the Sabres broke into the win column. That time finally came on Wednesday night and if the second half scoring explosion in the Sabres’ 47-38 win over Jacobs at Huntley is any indication there should be plenty more wins to come.

  • South Elgin overcomes Jacobs Nov 22, 2014 8:55 PM
Delaney Kelleher made sure to remind teammate Bridgette Williams about how all South Elgin girls basketball players are supposed to conclude postgame interviews this season. “Roll Storm,” Kelleher said to Williams. “Roll Storm,” Williams repeated. The Storm did not roll over and give in to early foul trouble or other adverse circumstances late Saturday afternoon and improved to 2-1 with a 51-43 victory over Jacobs in the third round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament in Carpentersville.

It was anything but smooth sailing for the Bartlett-Streamwood co-op team in Friday's girls swimming and diving state meet preliminaries at Evanston Township High School. And yet, in the final analysis, the Sabrehawks still have plenty to look forward to in Saturday's finals, which begin at noon.
